When you want to join Salat (jama’a), you must first do takbirat’l ihram (the opening “Allahu Albar”) before joining whatever position the jama’a is at. Otherwise, your salat is invalid
The takbirat’l ihram is a pillar of salat, if missing, that prayer is invalid.
