As a pedestrian, you should always look for ways to reduce your risk of a collision in the crosswalk. Before crossing, watch for turning vehicles. Don’t assume drivers can see you. If driving, expect pedestrians to be in the crosswalk every time and turn slowly. #VisionZero

Remember the following safety tips when using an ATM: Be suspicious of anyone who approaches you. Use well-lit and populated ATM’s and avoid those located directly on the street. Cover your hand while entering your PIN number and put your money away before you exit.

Car thieves are looking for unattended vehicles to steal. When parking your car to run an errand, don’t leave the vehicle running or the keys in the ignition, even for a minute. Make a habit of turning off your vehicle, removing the keys, and locking your doors.

Turning vehicles are a leading cause of injuries and fatalities to pedestrians. Before turning, look both ways and proceed with caution. Always yield to pedestrians and bicyclists. #VisionZero @NYPDTransport

Scammers will use a variety of ways to contact you and ask for money, often by requesting the purchase of gift cards. Gift cards are for gifts, not payment. If you are contacted and asked to purchase a gift card to pay someone for any reason, it’s always a scam.

Unattended property can be an opportunity for a thief to steal your valuables. Consider registering items such as cellphones or laptops with the NYPD Operation ID program to identify the owner in case of theft. Contact your local Crime Prevention Officer for more information.

Whether you are walking on the street or using public transit, pay special attention to your personal property. Prevent thefts by carrying bags close to your body and avoid displaying expensive electronics. Carry only the amount of cash or credit cards you will need.
