🚨 You may have heard or seen us in the news today! Here's why we're calling on the @WelshGovernment to urgently review the findings of the latest GP audit by @RCPhysicians and deliver a full respiratory improvement plan. 👇 1⃣ Last year, more than 1,000 children in Wales ended up in hospital due to an asthma attack or related emergency. 2⃣ New data shows less than a quarter of children in Wales have an asthma action plan, which is unacceptable. 3⃣ Children in Wales’s most deprived areas face nearly three times more asthma hospital admissions than those in the least deprived areas. Katie Kwiecinski, a nurse from Ystradgynlais, has a five-year-old son with asthma she said: “When Theo first had issues with his breathing, it was a terrifying time for us as a family. His asthma attacks would often come out of the blue, especially at night, and we had to call 999 multiple times. Trying to give a small child an inhaler through a spacer when they’re already struggling to breathe was incredibly distressing. The asthma nurses at Morriston Hospital were fantastic. They gave us a care plan that helped us and Theo’s nursery feel more confident in managing his condition. “However, I feel there’s a real lack of awareness around childhood asthma. Despite Theo’s multiple hospital admissions, we never received any information leaflets or guidance beyond that initial care plan. More resources, education, and public awareness are needed so that parents, schools, and communities know how to act in an emergency. "Theo is now five and much more aware of his symptoms. He’s learned to manage his asthma daily, and we are so proud of him. But the cold winter months remains a worrying time, and every cough makes us anxious. We do everything we can such as taking his medicines as prescribed, making sure he has his flu vaccine, but it’s still a stressful season" As the nation's leading lung charity, we want children with asthma to thrive and live well. Without stronger action to address complacency around asthma, thousands of children will remain at risk.
