Posting this again as this is badly needed for our Palestinian, Israeli, Jewish and Muslim colleagues and all who have an affinity with this horrendous situation
If you know someone that’s affected wrap your arms around them metaphorically or physically - they need it ❤️
Compassionate inclusive leadership is needed in these times more than ever. If someone comes to you to talk about their upset, fear, anxieties please take time to just be present with them, listen, & show compassion. That’s often the most powerful thing they need in that moment
NHS porters are the backbone of hospitals. Many have a story to share. I know Porters who are ex- military, retired police officers, those in recovery & people who genuinely want to care as a chosen career. Too often Porters are looked down on & today, I want to say thank you💙
In the NHS we aren’t always very good at looking after those at the top so today, maybe check in on Your Consultant, Your Matron, Your team lead, Your Manager
In my experience all the above deeply care for their teams but quite often at great personal sacrifice
#OneTeam
I’m going to be honest. Im so overwhelmed with this OBE. I didn’t think normal people ever got them. Especially not the boat rockers.
I feel a fraud, an imposter but after all the ❤️ and support I feel proper proud. Here’s to the people who are in our circle. I love you ❤️
I am President of the British Thoracic Society and stand alongside my intensive care colleagues
I have been vaccinated because I know it is the single most important thing I can do to avoid being admitted to ICU or dying from COVID
And because it will protect all I care about 💙
Cannot switch off after today
Today we have 7024 people in hospitals with COVID & 160 on ventilators - this is a 37% increase in one week.
The majority cared for on respiratory & acute wards which are already under pressure & more so as the weather changes & winter approaches
I’ll say it again…..as a Respiratory Clinician I continue to wear a mask while commuting and in offices and at work to reduce the potential spread of infection & protect those more vulnerable than myself
This pandemic is not over and it’s OK TO WEAR A MASK if you want to

The most consistent advice I’ve given as a NHS therapy manager is you cannot provide perfect therapeutic interventions/rehabilitation during a pandemic
You have to give patients & yourself realistic expectations, have time boundaries & know your physical & emotional limitations

As a respiratory clinician I will continue to wear my mask come Monday everywhere I go but also encourage my family, friends & patients
Yes it’s warm but it’s not a patch on wearing full PPE inside a hospital for 12 hrs
Why? 54,674 people tested positive today in the UK
Staff from all disciplines working overtime, staying late, covering sickness, caring for each other, doing everything to make sure shifts are as supportive as they can be, even when people are struggling emotionally & physically.
The solidarity is powerful but the fear is there
The interview bias in the NHS has to be called out. We need to support all marginalised communities & those with protected characterises to enable an equal playing field. Otherwise we will NEVER have diversity in the most senior roles. We all need to call this out when we see it
The statistics are openly available for anyone who wants to deny that COVID exists or us Respiratory Clinicians are worrying over nothing. We worry because we care about you 😞⬇️

For all the managers wanting to ‘diversify’ their recruitment approach…simply asking an ethnic minority or LGBTQIA+ or disabled person/colleague to sit on an interview panel is not it - it starts way before the shortlisting process
Tokenism does not = equality or equity. IMO

Microaggressions (eg moving to the dark side) made in jest are harmful & for those that suffer everyday microaggressions will be less likely to apply
