Purple #amethyst crystals adorn the interior of this Allosaurus leg bone from #Utah 's Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry. The crystals grow inside hollow bone shafts filled with water rich in dissolved minerals. Some #geodes form in a similar way. #FossilFriday @BLMUtah

@UUtah @BLMNational @BLMUtah @UofUCMES The first specimen was discovered in the 1990s—without a head. The skull was discovered several years later. The full skeleton was helicoptered out to be prepared. Meanwhile, more fossils were being found all the time.

This is the underside of @NHMU 's new tyrannosaur skull. Some will notice this side has more teeth and is generally better preserved, which is usually the case. When the creature dies and falls, the exposed parts will experience erosion and decay far faster. #fossilfriday

Akainacephalus johnsoni is the most complete Late Cretaceous ankylosaurid #dinosaur discovered from Utah and the southwestern U.S. It is distinguished by a number of unique features, including spikes and cones of the bony exterior covering the head and snout.

The massive tail club of Zuul cruvivastator, an ankylosaurine from Montana, was well suited for defense. But Dr. David Evans of @ROMtoronto shared with us that Zuul may have used that tail club for "intraspecific combat." That is, wailing on each other in ritualized combat!

A #CROCtober size comparison. This 3-foot-long un-named #fossil crocodylian on display in Past Worlds at @NHMU is a close relative of living alligators and caimans. Despite being 76 million years old, nearly all of its bones were found in life position, at a site in #Utah . (1/2)

NHMU has a new species in its fossil collections! A research team from @MCZHarvard just described Megasiphon thylakos, an early tunicate preserved in 500 million-year-old rocks in western Utah. Tunicates are still alive today, and as chordates, they're our distant relatives!

For #FossilFriday we return to the not-so-distant Eocene, a mere 52 million years ago, and uncover this lovely Presbyornis specimen from our collection. Anyone who spends a lot of time with waterfowl, or playing Duck Hunt, might find this skull surprisingly familiar. (1 of 2)

This is not a crocodile! Phytosaurs resemble crocodiles, but they are not closely related. These extinct reptiles lived during the Late Triassic (237-201.3 million years ago) and predate modern crocodilians by over 100 million years! #FossilFriday
