Martin Luther King, Jr. Day honors the life and legacy of Dr. King and the civil rights movement. Dr. King visited North Carolina many times! Here is a photo of a visit from Dr. King to to Edenton, NC, 8 May 1966, to promote a SCLC voter registration drive.

OTD in 1837, Nimrod Jarrett Smith, principal chief of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians from 1880-1891, was born near Murphy. He is credited with gaining approval by the NC legislature for the band's incorporation as a legal entity &for gaining federal recognition as a tribe.

President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan 1, 1863, as the nation approached its third year of civil war. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."
