"This year's International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM calls for sustained and long-term interventions beyond symbolic events. One-off awareness campaigns, while important, are not enough. Stakeholders must integrate anti-FGM efforts into broader gender equality and development programmes to drive lasting change..."- Onyimbi Nelson #InternationalDayOfZeroToleranceForFGM

NGOTIEK: Despite being preventable, this disease continues to devastate lives due to limited access to screening, vaccination and treatment. This January, which is the Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, offers an opportunity to amplify efforts to end this preventable disease. The 2025 theme emphasises the power of vaccines and early detection, urging governments, communities and individuals to take action.

ONYIMBI: The health sector is approaching breaking point, occasioned by regular stockouts of supplies, inadequate personnel and regular industrial action by medics fighting for better terms. Without accessible education, employment and healthcare, millions of Kenyans are being pushed further into poverty. Yet, instead of addressing these pressing issues, political leaders are engrossed with securing their political futures.

Kerry Mwita: The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights has documented 71 enforced disappearances and 60 extrajudicial killings in the past six months. Several government critics remain missing, including four young men abducted in Mlolongo. While the Foreign Affairs ministry pledged to protect civic space, ongoing violations suggest otherwise. The Public Benefits Organizations Act of May 2024 has been undermined by political intolerance. To restore democracy, the international community must pressure Kenya to respect the rule of law, while citizens remain vigilant in protecting their constitutional freedoms.
