NASA’s Electrojet Zeeman Imaging Explorer (EZIE) mission has arrived at the Vandenberg Space Force Base in California ahead of its March 2025 launch. EZIE, a trio of satellites, will map the electric currents associated with auroras. More:

#OTD in 1958 — six months before President Eisenhower signed the act that created NASA — the U.S. launched its first satellite, Explorer 1. Once in space, Explorer 1 detected surprisingly intense radiation surrounding our planet. 👇

Last week, bright comet C/2024 G3 (ATLAS) dove by the Sun and through the view of @ESA/ NASA’s SOHO spacecraft, as shown here. Even though @USNRL’s Karl Battams knew it was coming, it still took him by surprise. 🧵 ⬇️.

“I think the remarkable thing is the heavily striated tail,” Battams added. This further processed version of the same image highlights those striations. “There’s a combination of processes going on that will take scientists some time to figure out.”

The comet made its closest pass to the Sun, on January 13, soaring a mere 9 percent the average Earth-Sun distance from our star. There are signs it might have broken up after the flyby, but scientists are still assessing its status. Learn more:
