#BlackHistoryMonth is a time to celebrate, uplift, and amplify Black voices, achievements, and contributions. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on our connections to those around us, and to come together to spark positive change. But what happens when the month ends? How do we carry forward what we’ve learned? It requires open-mindedness, a willingness to be uncomfortable, and the courage to challenge biases—both our own and those in society. It’s about continuous growth and action. “There’s so much that me and you can do,” says Ola Odanye, EDI Specialist at NAIT. “Maybe we just start with a small step.” Learn more about the seven small steps Ola recommends to honour Black history and to build a more inclusive future all year long:

It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of His Highness Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV, the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community. His Highness was a visionary leader whose lifelong dedication to education and social progress has profoundly improved the lives of many around the world. His Highness’ unwavering belief in the transformative power of education to uplift and empower all has left a lasting impact on the world — one that deeply inspires NAIT. His tireless efforts to advocate for opportunity and understanding has helped build a better future. We extend our heartfelt condolences to His Highness’ family and the global Ismaili community. May his legacy of service and leadership continue to light the path forward. Yasmin Jivraj, NAIT Board of Governors Chair Laura Jo Gunter, NAIT President & CEO

After attending the recent North America's Building Trades Unions' Tradeswomen Building Nations conference, Morgan Bosch (Crane and Hoist Equipment Operator '17), an all-terrain crane operator with Mammoet, was inspired to build a sisterhood. Her idea, a group called YEG Blue Collar Women, would be a space where female tradespeople could share and compare experiences. A place where women could comfortably claim their space in a field where they remain a minority. The group has attracted more than 1,000 members so far. YEG Blue Collar Women has become a place where women help each other with exams, point to new career opportunities, or just regularly ask for advice that men simply can’t give female colleagues. Morgan will be one of the speakers at the Build Her Up: Skilled Trades Conference on March 6. Registrations are now open for this free conference, which is creating a space for tradespeople and students to share their experience in the trades, participate in workshops and network. Read more about Morgan's journey and the Build Her Up conference: #WomenInTrades #TradesConference

We're excited to be one of Alberta’s hubs as part of the new College-University Lab to Market Network for Entrepreneurship and Research Commercialization program supported by @NSERC_CRSNG. This 5-year $95.3M program aims to drive #innovation. As a part of this initiative, NAIT will deliver entrepreneurial education through our skilled non-credit instruction, and help innovators bring their prototypes or ideas to life through access to our applied research facilities and labs. We are proud to be a part of this initiative, allowing our strong history of providing hands-on training and innovative research approaches to support the commercialization of research within #Alberta and across Canada.

In 1969, Don Smailes helped found the Associated Respiratory Services (ARS), a company dedicated to improving Albertans' quality of life by providing homecare to treat chronic respiratory illnesses, the first of its kind. The company went on to expand across Canada and into the US. When it sold in 1990, Don and several ARS employees went on to establish the ARH Healthcare Foundation to help fund #RespiratoryTherapy (RT) education. In honour of his life’s work, and thanks to a generous donation from the ARH Foundation, the Don Smailes RT student awards were established to lighten students’ financial burdens and help them continue their education in a high-demand health-care profession. Beginning in the 25-26 academic year, students entering their second year in the RT program will be able to apply for one of these bursaries valued at approximately $6,000 each, with a preference for students attending #NAIT from rural areas.

Among the cofounders of the Ukrainian free store were a veteran fundraiser, Janice Krissa, and her daughter, Jorgia Moore (Bachelor of Business Administration – Accounting ’21). Some of the volunteers suggested adding a pop-up shop to sell homemade, authentic Ukrainian cooking. With that, DON’YA Ukraine's Kitchen was born. In the months to come, the venture moved from one donated kitchen space to the next, with help from Edmonton community members. Since then, Jorgia has learned everything from securing licenses, figuring out barcodes, managing paid staff and getting shelf space in grocery stores. Jorgia hasn't looked back. "I didn’t plan to open a food services company," she says, but expanding Don'Ya and helping those working with the company secure permanent residency in Canada have become her priorities. Read more about Jorgia's journey, Don'Ya and what might become the Starbucks of Ukrainian grab-and-go:
