Amateur radio operator who enjoys QRP, POTA, CW, and satellites. Satellite roving when I can. Stressed medical student. Musician. PhD in procrastination.
Excited to announce that from July 26 - August 18 I am planning a satellite and 6m roving trip through Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland. Also included on the trip will be two days in St. Pierre and Miquelon, a rare satellite DXCC. More details coming soon!
Two days ago, 4/27, marked nine months since my first satellite contact! Since then I have worked 425 VUCC grids, 254 US grids towards the Gridmaster award, 65 DXCC, and roved 44 grids. Thanks to all who I've had contacts with for making this such a fun part of the hobby!
Au revoir Saint Pierre, it was a fantastic couple days and I hope to visit again sometime! Thanks for all the contacts, it was very fun to be able to give many satellite operators a new DXCC.
Working Greencube from the attic here is a little safer than the roof, although rather difficult to maneuver the Diamond 15el around the rafters... 😂 Roof does not appear to attenuate any significant part of the signal, which is what I was worried about at first.
Worked lots of EU stations on a 9° pass of RS-44 from the lighthouse at the end of this pier. If you didn't make it this time, don't worry, more passes coming!
Finally arrived home after 39 hours of driving since Friday morning. 😵💫 A total of 24 days on the road and 7536 miles driven, very fortunate to have had no vehicle trouble or anything else go wrong!
Will respond to many unanswered DMs and emails after I get some sleep. 😴
Found a highway maintenance depot along the Trans-Labrador Highway with public Starlink internet access. Only place for about a hundred miles! Very remote out here but the scenery is beautiful.
Much to my surprise, I am able to work Greencube just fine inside through a ceiling, whatever items are in the attic, and the roof. No US need for the grid, so taking some time to work toward a VUCC from here.
I have a Mount Everest of pass recordings to go through and log, will be working on that the next couple weeks. Just to be clear, this is how I will be logging from the different locations I operated:
N4AKV/R
N4AKV/VE1
N4AKV/VE9
N4AKV/VO1
N4AKV/VO2
N4AKV/VY2
FP/N4AKV
FN95/96/GN05/06 grid corner, near Catalone, NS. How fortunate that there happens to be a gravel pit right on this corner! The horizons aren't good in all directions but I can't complain too much.
FP/N4AKV: I want to make as many QSOs as possible and give out a new one! Please, prioritize working me on FM or linears if you have footprint and let Greencube be for those who can only work me there. Operations will be very congested and I want everyone to have a chance!
Staying the night in Greenspond, NL, in grid GN39. As far as I know, this grid has never been activated on sats before! 57 contacts in the log from 2 RS-44 passes. Tomorrow morning one pass from GN29/39 before a long drive to the other side of Newfoundland and GN19/GO10.

April 22-27 I am planning a whirlwind rove covering 16 grids, namely EM43-48, 52-58, 62, 65, and 66. Tentative pass schedule attached below, will post on closer to the date!

EM47/57 gridline, near Perryville, MO. Nice RS-44 pass with some CW action, Greencube was good at the beginning but then went 25 minutes without a digipeat. 😵💫 Anybody have a portable EME setup they want to loan me? 😆
The majority of logs from my Canada trip are now uploaded, minus a few RS-44 passes and most FM passes. Well over a thousand LEO QSOs made and going through all those recordings takes time! I'll keep plugging away at it.
EM45/55 gridline, near Osceola, AR. I have reached the fabled land of very low horizons! 😀
Wind terrible, had to keep my hand on the antenna the whole time to prevent it from blowing over. Sorry for the difficulties some stations had in getting me to hear them!
Logs from my big roving trip are all uploaded as far as I know now! Probably still a few missing, contact me if so. Trip statistics:
Miles driven: 7,536
States traversed: 14
Provinces visited: 5
Grids activated: 51
QSOs:
FM: 103
SSB: 1,114
CW: 2
GC: 543
Total: 1,762
GN26/27 gridline, near Fortune, NL. Cold, wet, and very foggy - Newfoundland's famous weather! Worked 22 and 29 stations on two RS-44 passes, which is definitely a record for me!
Greencube from the marsh this morning, made 26 contacts. 10 with JA, which is more than I've ever worked on HF! Blazing hot sitting in full sun but worth it! Almost all were grids new to me.
A few minutes of transmitting on FT8 with 20W and an earth electrode antenna - two copper pipes driven into the ground about 70 ft apart, connected with wire in the middle, and driven off center from coax. This is pretty crazy. 🤯
EM44/54 gridline, somewhere in the countryside of Mississippi. Another crowded Greencube pass, logged all who called and hope to catch more on the next one from here!
If you see the UHM checkmark, no need to keep calling me. I will log you and respond if possible. :)
Finally arrived home after a week of roving. 2300 miles driven through nine different states, with 16 grids activated. Will finish LOTW uploads in the next day or two (mostly FM pass recordings), as well as responding to all the emails and DMs I am behind on. 🤪
At the EM95/EM96 gridline, now waiting for Greencube to show up. Used my new FT-847 just now on RS-44 with CAT control and it performed brilliantly! Beyond pleased to finally have a linear rig that works as it's supposed to. 😆
Absolutely gorgeous day here in St. Pierre, hiking out to POTA PM-0002 now. Hope to be there by the 13:50Z RS-44 but the terrain here is surprisingly difficult!
Very difficult conditions from EL94 this morning. Heavy blowing rain mostly defeated the poor tiki hut and I sacrificed my own dryness so my radios could survive 😂 Wish I could do more from this grid but no time on this abbreviated rove.
GN17/18 gridline, in the middle of nowhere, NL. Only time for one RS-44 pass unfortunately but what a pileup! 41 contacts, which is a new personal best for a single pass!
Added a trailer hitch, cargo carrier, and built a frame with cover to make a nice cargo box on the back of my sedan. Perfect place for antenna equipment, my generator, and everything else I don't want to share the interior of the car with for three weeks 😂
I've been operating satellites for 3 months now.
153/488 Gridmaster, 254 VUCC, 43 satellite DXCC.
🤯🤯🤯
This is way more than I ever thought I'd be able to do! I've been having a blast! Huge thank you to the rovers and the awesome satellite community!
Rather crowded Greencube pass from the EM82/83 line, but I was able to respond to everyone who called me! The cotton field looked a little like snow, and 37°F made it feel pretty realistic too. 😂
GN36/37 gridline, near absolutely nowhere, NL. Very windy here and difficult to operate, sorry to those I missed on both RS-44 and Greencube! Hoping for better conditions later on.
All contacts from this weekend in EM93/94 and FM03/04 uploaded to LotW. 186 total QSOs, hope people got some new ones! DM or email me at my address on QRZ if you're missing a confirmation. I had a lot of fun doing this rove, look for me in EM82/83 coming up soon 😎
FM13 done now after a very congested Greencube pass. Apologies to those I missed on RS-44, unexpected equipment malfunction kept me completely off the bird. I'll come back here sometime next year, hoping to bring 6m gear to activate a very rare grid on the band!
Some scenes from driving through Newfoundland today. Absolutely stunning and the pictures don't do it justice. The views coming into the Burin Peninsula were worth every penny the trip cost!
FN77/87 gridline, at the very northern tip of Prince Edward Island. One more pass for EU in the morning before beginning 28 hours of driving back home!
EM47/57 gridline, somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Missouri. One RS-44 pass for EU coming up, then moving on! Will be at 435.655 or so on the downlink.
Beautiful evening for a POTA activation at local park US-9201. 21 contacts, all on 20m. Nice to catch fellow satellite operators
@KE9AJ
and
@TimNC0Q
in CW!
Not only does the FM25/26 gridline run near the hotel I'm staying at, turns out it literally runs through my room (which has a balcony)! This could not be a more fortuitous place of accommodation for a satellite rover. 😁
Boarding the ferry to Labrador (VO2-land) here soon. Likely will have very little cell coverage while I'm there. Especially looking for those who need CQ Zone

!
FN74/75 gridline, in Windsor, NS. Apologies for the late arrival, was busy enjoying the hospitality of John
@ve1cwj
as I passed through! Will get on GC as soon as the rain stops if possible.
Today activated POTA PM-0002, the first activation for this park as well as for the DXCC entity! Beautiful but windy day in FP, the antenna mast had its work cut out for it. Icom IC-705 at 10W CW and SSB and 5W digital, plus linear and FM satellite contacts.
@POTAspots
Wow, biggest pileup yet for FP/N4AKV on the RS-44 east coast pass! Bad local QRM at the end, sorry I missed some folks. More passes tomorrow, some hopefully from never-activated POTA PM-0002.
I've decided to take full advantage of my time off around Christmas and add another rove to the schedule. Look for me in Florida from the 27th to the 29th in grids EL86, 94, 95, and 97. QRV FM, linears, and Greencube as always.

@GridMasterMap
Thanks
@WW2DX
for CY9C on RS-44 for a new DXCC and grid! Managed to make it from my driveway through the trees, surprisingly few callers once I could hear well.
After RS-44 worked a sked with VO1HP on 2m terrestrial. Q65C-60 worked even with just my 10W and 3el Arrow! 277 km and he's probably the only person in the world with FP on 2m!
Finally was able to make my first contacts through the ISS tonight, after nearly six months of satellite operations... 🤪 Less crowded at almost 1 am local! 100% calls I've never heard before on the satellites. Clearly there is a whole category of ISS-only operators.
5°C (41°F) when I woke up in Labrador this morning. I wasn't quite expecting that in August! Time to head back toward the coast where it's a little warmer.
Worked a Greencube pass this morning with a max elevation of 1.5°. Lots of QSOs with JA, no issues hearing or getting into the bird. I got digipeated down to 0.3°. That satellite has an impressive receiver.
Was going to run some FT8 from the hotel room in FP. As it turns out, the hotel room is equipped with touch sensitive lights, and they turn on whenever I start transmitting. I suspect I may have turned the lights on down the whole hallway as well. 🫣😬
Well. Have arrived on a patch of federal game land to sleep overnight before activating EM82/83 tomorrow. Why do I keep ending up in the boondocks while roving? 😂
Just worked TX5S Clipperton Island on Greencube. Absurdly easy, took about 20 seconds to make the contact. Now I shall proceed to go about my daily activities with a big DX grin on my face. 😂

I will be using UHM for Greencube passes as long as I have cell service where I am operating! See other operating information at
If you can work me on a LEO satellite, please try to do so to avoid congestion on GC. :)
EM43/53 gridline, near Grenada, MS. Very crowded Greencube pass just now, apologies to the JA ops I missed who needed MS. Two more passes from MS tomorrow.
Linear and FM passes from this gridline coming up this afternoon!
After two passes in the morning, tomorrow is rover vacation day. I will be hiking and activating a few different POTA/SOTA references in southeast Missouri. Will try to be on some satellite passes (EM47), hopefully as POTA/SOTA credit, but nothing scheduled.
6 meter portable/roving station. 4 element Arrow yagi and 150W amp, powered by an 800W generator. Running meteor scatter this morning and it's working so far!
LotW certificates for several Canadian provinces and St. Pierre & Miquelon now applied for! Things are getting real, only 17 days left before I leave. 😃
Fingers crossed the US government actually expedites my passport processing like I paid them to do 😬🤪
Made it to a bank parking lot on the FN33/43 line with ten minutes to spare after eleven hours of driving, including stopping for an oil change! I know nobody needs 43 but it's another /R grid for me 🤪 Now it's time to hit the road again for another several hours.
Two satellite roves coming up soon! I will be in FM13 (NC) on 12-15 and EM75/76/85/86 (TN) from the 18th-20th. QRV FM, linears, and Greencube. Will be posting passes on soon.

@GridMasterMap
EM65/66 gridline, somewhere in the countryside of west Tennessee. Horizons are not good here at all, will see what I can do on Greencube but may not be able to work much JA/AS.
Worked a good number of stations from EL95, will possibly try another pass tomorrow afternoon if time/weather permit. Florida is called the Sunshine State, but I think it should be renamed to the Mosquito State 🦟😬😂
N4AKV/R is on the road now with a fully repaired and maintained vehicle. Heading to FN11 - unfortunately won't make the first two passes I had hoped but should be there for RS-44 followed by Greencube. Running APRS for this whole trip as N4AKV-9.
Will be operating satellites as WA4USN from the USS Yorktown CV-10 tomorrow for Museum Ships Weekend. Also will be on HF CW, hope to work lots of folks on the birds and the bands! 😁
*Very* crowded Greencube pass from the EM93/FM03 gridline, apologies to those I missed. I will come back here soon, it's only a 45 minute drive for me. Location has a good horizon for passes coming from the NW, I could decode starting at 2 degrees.
Thanks for the QSOs from EL97 tonight! Hope it was a new one for many of you. My RF kept turning a nearby security light on, so that kept things interesting!
On Saturday, November 4th, I am planning to operate from the EM82/83 gridline in GA on FM, linears, and Greencube. Not the rarest grids but I know of at least four operators out West that need 83! Passes will be posted soon on .

I am experiencing heavy congestion and difficulty responding to everyone on the Greencube digipeater. You do not need to call me again if you see I have heard you via UHM!
US stations please wait until JA is out of FP before calling me, please.
