When you get some time, go to Buyer Beware on Facebook and look for the post where Kenyans were discussing lessons from their failed ventures and the type of businesses.
It's basically remote/phone/Mpesa farming, clothing and Uber but let me break it down further briefly.
I am tired of govt threats for service delivery. I am waiting to see how Safaricom leaves their okoa jahazi, mshwari and fuliza on blocked lines.
Let them try.
Kenyans be like
I like riding - msee nduthi itakuua mapema
I prefer camping - Mimi siezi lala chini
I did it with PSVs- cheki, that is tiring.
I do budget travel - Eh me heri nikae nyumbani
Let people start somewhere with what they can afford. There's something for everyone
Anything that can make you tons of money can also clean you in one bad deal
Don't be greedy. Don't assume everyone else is stupid. If you're feeling smarter than everyone else in that table, chances are you're the idiot in the deal.
By the way, Jacaranda beach Watamu is super clean and the beach boys do a sweep daily. You'll gaze into this whiteness for hours, you can walk in two hours during the low tide and ain't no one bothering you. Took amateur phone pics yesterday, no filter and looks like a painting.
People do very random things for a living in Nairobi. Like this guy specializes in evictions.
You know when you have a contentious plot and want to muscle your way in? Or have occupants who won't vacate?
He has a way around that stuff and his portfolio is impressive 🤣🤣🤣
Any business which you don't understand the hidden dynamics don't get into it.
Like a wines and spirits, bars and transport without a godfather. You might find out your competition has rigged the game.
Always remember no one goes into business with enemies but money can bring serious misunderstanding.
Doesn't matter if you're going into it as a couple, friends or colleagues. Just have structures and oversight plus a way of resolving disputes and decision making. Important!
Be cautious about things "that have money". Like your friend told you hardware iko na pesa, importing clothes, selling bags or shoes has money. You can go to China or buy a bale and pigwa na butwaa ukingoja jackpot.
Do what you know. Start small. Don't go all in round one.
There are businesses that only make financial sense if the owner is the operator or has domain experience.
Like an Uber car. If you buy one, drive it to learn and understand.
Most people don't make enough to service car loan, pay driver and maintenance.
Or a butchery.
@Makiadi_
Athletes don't make money from medals (so many world champions are broke). When sponsors are looking at athletes as brand ambassadors, those media appearances are part of the return on investment they're going to get. So man's securing the bag, it's not lack of focus really.
You know why Lamu Island is sad to leave and people extend/move/go back?
Property owners host you.
Locals are story tellers. No one's trying to sell you anything.
You can walk on the beach or alleys and nothing makes you feel unsafe.
++ More.
Try Shela. It's charming!
If you're going to Ngong Hills for a hike to fix cabin fever, please take an armed ranger at the gate to guide and accompany your friends and family. As you can see there are lots of buffalos spotted lately grazing nearby the trail and with the mist you might not see the future!
What if we had a day every month where we would support local/ made in 🇰🇪 brands as a nation? Wear something, learn our history or eat our food, watch artists play our instruments, catch a local band perform/play KE music? All this vibe shared online for the culture. Just that!
Only invest in sectors you have expertise in or get a business partner with the domain knowledge equally vested.
Like don't open a pharmacy then hire an inexperienced white lab coat if you're not a pharmacist or partnering with a professional.
Put your money in capable hands.
Businesses are not democracies and tough decisions have to be made without a debate or a vote at times. It's a game of conflict resolution and negotiations.
Don't make it a me vs the others. It's not a fight. Partner with people you respect professionally and trust personally.
If you have 50K to spend on a holiday, you should at least have 20-30% of it as pocket money after you've paid for transport & accommodation to eat out, add on activities, shop, explore attractions in the destination, and for emergencies/treats.
So your budget is 35K max not 50K.
Only invest what you can lose. Or have that on the table "Ask the person putting in money, what if this doesn't work out".
This is not being afraid but sizing up the risks and how people perceive failure.
In a service business, your employee most likely dream of having a similar outfit.
A barber wants to have his shop one day
A driver will want to own a vehicle one day
Hata dame wa massage anataka kufungua place yake one day
Urgently looking for a consistent reliable large scale supply of fruits and veggies. Especially avocados, looking for 100 tonnes. Even 1 or 2 tonnes can help as long as its consistent. Please do get in touch +254112299557
If you follow conservation matters, there's a narrative being pushed to fundraise that in the absence of foreigners (tourism), natives around protected areas are turning to poaching.Before the white man rocked up in 1890s for big game hunting, we had ample wildlife and coexisted.
I promised myself I'd never lose sleep over business. You do your thing during office hours and call it a day because if you're not careful the hustle can consume you.
Being an entrepreneur is one aspect of your life. Don't let everything revolve around one thing. Take a break.
I just hope that entire cast was paid some hardship allowance above their normal wages.
Vile vijana hatuna kazi unaeza ambiwa kuna works mahali kumbe unaenda kupigwa vita kwa set ya BBC
The homeless in Nairobi bathe in polluted Nairobi river and uhuru park in broad daylight especially women for their own safety.
I can't think of a more dehumanizing thing. What would it take to have public bathrooms with showers for the street families?
@NMS_Kenya
You have reached KoT support, how can we help?
Oh they don't fly
@KenyaAirways
? Have you tried "Do you know who I am?" or "Let me speak to your boss
Restart the router if the above doesn't work.
There's always a first time for everything. Na hizi ndege wengi wetu tumezipanda juzi juzi. Hakuna aibu hapa, it's legit scary and that's valid. Sio ushamba ama nini.
There's only so much that lawyers can cover but don't transact on trust alone. One party will feel they're doing more, or can go at it alone. Discuss exit options and business continuity.
A biz is not a marriage for better or for worse. People will leave and others come onboard.
80% of the spinal cord injured people in Kenya die within 5 years due to loneliness, depression, and inactivity. I am reading somewhere that over 700,000 people in Kenya are battling spinal cord injuries.

KK has been very organized, proactive and tactical. These guys have already wooed the independent winners and hosted them 'to align' interests.
Then met the clergy 'to give thanks to God'.
Like, even in the event of a run off these guys are strategic for any eventualities.
I am praying for y'all to land amazing gigs in 2020 that allow you to flex your creative to the limits or pay well enough for you to do passion projects that truly matter to you.
Also budgets from those who want something different and lesser changes to your magic. Good luck!
I'd like to form a Twitter SME club with 30 entrepreneurs across sectors where we cross promote our businesses in a merry go round type format once a month.
We'll have preferential rates for members and applicable discounts for friends, associates and family within the network.
What relevant skills do you have that will be useful in the business?
What network have you built that can be valuable to the business?
How much of your time does it require? Or do you have to dedicate?
Are you going to hire, partner up or run it yourself?
#sidehustle
I need to ask people who live alone what they do when they misplace things in the house.
Nimetumia kisu saa hii then si I've looked for it everywhere? Kumbe I put the knife in the fridge and left tomatoes outside.
I open the fridge to get milk and the damn🔪 is there chilling!
Andela really disappeared from tech conversations in Africa yet they had owned that remote work niche in the continent before Covid 19.
That's one company that fumbled the bag like Skype.
Do you know
@Barclays
Bank was built from the torture, humiliation, exploitation & murder of slaves?David and Alexander Barclay, them two greedy slave trading brothers in the 1750’s profited so much from slavery they started Barclays Bank in 1756 with their slave trading profits.
I don't think people talk enough about founder burnout because entrepreneurs experience it
Employees can switch jobs, get promotions, relocate, take a sabbatical etc but for founders what's next when you feel like "I've done everything and there's nothing left inside me"?
It's the privileged folks that are entertaining this idea of a lockdown.
The same ones who ask poor people why they've not eaten.
Once you've stocked up, have a car, got Netflix and tech for WFH, you're left wondering why it's so hard for others to stay at home or using PSVs

@PyxisVault
How much money is the side hustle going to generate in revenue? If it's a milk ATM, car wash, choma place, car etc just know how much one can net in a good month.
Not all businesses require you to go fulltime but if you won't, ensure it can afford personnel and pay its bills.
If you're going to Diani or Watamu connecting with SGR to coast, just fly if flights aren't that expensive.
You can't compare that time, hustle to and from SGR stations and the back breaking journey in that economy class.
You're going on holiday and deserve the convenience.
There is a gang of three young people carrying one pistol around Uthiru, 87 and Kinoo that robbed my peeps last night. Two separate incidents, they strike as you open the gate. Please alert your friends and neighbours. If you see anything, report to
@DCI_Kenya
. Stay safe & alert!
Don't take these expensive mobile loans to pay for travel or turn to gambling for odds.
Only go for what you can afford now if you really can't miss out.
Stay at home and enjoy your rent, the nature and beauty around you as you save.
Don't let FOMO push you into debt please.
Breakfast in Nairobi, lunch in Isiolo, dinner in Marsabit.

You need to let go this guilt of adulting by enjoying the little pleasures of life without feeling like you should have done something else for others. It's not being irresponsible but simply feeling you deserve to enjoy your money your way. It's yours, after all. Travel!
Lamu has been interesting discovering that almost all shops here are run by people from Meru. Infact one guy has like 7 or 8 and they are also responsible for the khat supply on the Lamu, Pate, Manda and Kiwayu islands.
With all due respect, that Maasai print is over done. If we're going for anything tribal, let's go get some inspiration from other communities as well because we're 44 tribes. There must really be other things that "speak Kenyan".
A short story. Don't step out of the vehicles.
Common sense ain't all too common.
Follow park rules for your own safety. You don't need to be policed to get a perfect shot. This is not an industry problem just some people who don't think twice or care about their own lives.
People who bought front loaded plots in the outskirts of Nairobi for speculation are trying offload for capital gains but the market is like nah. Just buy some soil when you want to dig something in it.
People are missing the great outdoors and Nairobians are heading out to catch some air, sun and keep fit as they experience the green spaces in Nairobi.
A pic taken at Karura this morning.
No one at Cadbury thought "Wait a minute guys, what's in it for these writers"? Like you know someone should have said something but there's hardly ever a good time to pay for creative work.

That's the power of domestic tourism. It shouldn't be an afterthought when destination hits the fan with travel advisories or Covid 19. See queue at Sekenani gate🙏
No one could have foreseen this. A month ago hotels were fully booked over Valentine's weekend and 30 days later someone tells you they've been sent out on unpaid leave.
I think people will come out of this completely different managers and individuals.
I was at the Getaway Tourism Expo on Sunday and some hotels were fully booked over Easter weekend. Airlines we're adding flights to meet demand. One of my fav beach resorts had a reopening cocktail on Thursday after a year.
Tour operators were banking on the long weekend.
