Pinned tweet: Here’s a list of my twitter thread about NHL rules and cap situation.
I will update it every time i do one. I will try to cover every subject that i feel is important or not know enough. If you have any suggestions, simply ask!
McDavid road to 900 points:
0 to 100 points – 92 Games Played
100 to 200 – 82 GP
200 to 300 – 68 GP
300 to 400 – 67 GP
400 to 500 – 64 GP
500 to 600 - 53 GP
600 to 700 - 68 GP
700 to 800 - 56 GP
800 to 900 - 58 GP
There are a lot of things that we can discuss about in Michkov case. I will discuss here about the business side (KHL or NHL CBA related or transfer agreement).
I will try to cover everything: his financial situation in the KHL, his contract, possible buyout, ELC, etc.
Toronto spends 59.7M on their forwards. That’s more than 71% of the salary cap (83.5M)
Teams qualified for the 2nd round
Edmonton 58%
Colorado 58%
Rangers 58%
Carolina 62%
Boston 49%
Florida 59%
Vancouver 53%
I refrained myself from making any comment about the disgrace we saw since the draft but I will make one:
For anyone who compared a player to Hitler, for anyone who insulted the team/management/etc. and many other things.
You’re not a fan. You’re not mentally stable.
Here’s the full quote.
"It’s my pleasure. Right now, I've got butterflies in my stomach because it’s the first time against our Canadiens. I say it because it’s in my heart. It’s the first time I’m watching the Habs and that I will not support them."
It was a great interview.
Pacioretty was a really great player in 2014-2015. But i think that Suzuki is already a better player than Pacioretty ever was. Only 23 years old and already a great player.
Not surprised at all that the league didn’t allowed a REE. Toronto had the cap space to recall Woll. They decided to sign Knies instead.
It’s Toronto fault here.
By sitting an healthy Rielly, recalling Simmonds, they created themselves the emergency situation. Not allowed
Olivier Kapanen could be eligible to be placed in the AHL this season. Kapanen needs to be on the roster until Dec 7.
A retained player can be placed in the AHL without being offered first to his IIHF team if the player spent at least 60 days on the active roster.
Slafkovsky scored his 19th goal and earn his first hat trick in his career!
If he scored another goal this season, he will achieve one of his performance bonuses target, giving him 250k.
"Vegas could have look on Capfriendly to see the No-Trade list"
Have you ever seen a no-trade list on Capfriendly? No, they never did and they will never show no-trade list for any reasons.
No-trade list are extremely private. Only a few people have access to it.
@ncbjd
@PredsNHL
There’s 9 years left to Saros’s contract and extension. He has a full NMC during the entirety of his extension.
Askarov didn’t want to wait 10 years before becoming a starter? Shocking.
I’ve seen a misconception today on Twitter: Jamie Drysdale and other RFAs will not become UFAs today.
The 2023 deadline for NHL teams to tender Qualifying Offers (QO) to their RFA (Group 2 and 10.2(c)) is June 30 5PM ET.
George W. Bush's last year in office: 2009
Bill Clinton's last year in office: 2001
Both are 77 years old today.
If they were running today, they would be younger than Trump and Biden.
There's a minimum age to be president of the US. Maybe it's time for a maximum age.
To answer several tweets I've seen, CapFriendly is still online and everything is normal.
The deal is not official yet. The Capitals and CapFriendly have reached an agreement to purchase the site. That's it.
The site will remain online until the deal is finalized.
Montreal’s situation on July 1 2024:
This summer, Montreal will have 8M of cap space with 21 players on their projected roster.
Estimate for the
1) Overage penalty from me
2) Salary cap from the NHL’s projection in December.
Waivers status for next season in the tweet below ⬇️
To correct a misinformation I’ve seen:
Edmonton cannot trade Broberg or Holloway to any team no matter what.
Their only choice is to match the offersheet or to take the compensation.
If they match, they cannot trade the player for the next 365 days.
This is over. Boston are eliminated. They become the 2nd team in NHL history to have 60 wins a season being eliminated in the first round.
They will now have to deal with 4.5M of cap penalty next season.
Tampa 2019 and Boston 2023 failed horrendously.
Kotkaniemi has only 5 points in his last 30 games. The fun part of signing a young player to a long-term contract is the very low buyout cost!
Because of his age, Carolina would have a very cheap buyout if they decide to end the experience in 2024/2025/2026
Less than 900k/year!
I don’t understand why people are complaining about offside reviews.
It’s not important in the NFL to have accurate yardage? Oh, it’s only 1 yard, it’s not worth negative the first down?
Rules are rules. It’s an offside.
Objectively hilarious situation, but I need someone to explain to me how being an inch offside has any effect on the play. If the offside is too tiny to see at first glance, it’s not worth negating a goal.
Take away the offside review
Here's a thread about the Weber/Dadonov trade. I will start with MTL side. It will be a long thread so I will put a number to enumerate every different aspect.
14 tweets MTL / 7 tweets Vegas
To replace CapFriendly, I recommend to use
@PuckPedia
.
Please, never use Spotrac. It might be useful for other sports but they are not the best website for the NHL.
From my side, I will also explain my goals for the coming seasons.
McDavid is alone at the top, he is the only player in NHL history to record 32 assists in a postseason!
McDavid is also the only player in NHL history with Lemieux and Gretzky with 38 pts.
If there’s any doubt that McDavid is already a top 5 player of all time, it’s over now!
With Laine’s acquisition, Montreal is now projected to be over the cap by 437k with an active roster of 21 players.
To be compliant on Day 1, they could have a 20 players roster or they could be as close as possible of 89.1M with 22 players.
It’s insane how fanbases are always trying to blame every person on the planet before blaming their own teams 😅
You dont have to like the rule. You can disagree with the logic of a rule. However, the rule is still a rule. It’s not the NHL fault if the team is not following it.
@LucGelinasRDS
Washington is eliminated by the Rangers. Washington will have the 17th overall pick in the 2024 entry draft.
Here’s the current order of the draft.
I hope the colors will help people who have questions about the order of the playoff teams!
I don’t see any problem about this interview. He doesn’t suddenly hate the Canadiens. It wouldn’t make sense. He’s fully committed to Ottawa today and he has goals for the Senators, on the ice and off the ice.
As usual, you can have your opinion about all that. It's your right. I didn't give my opinion, I simply tried to put all the facts together to help people to understand the whole situation.
I hope this thread will be useful!
Robin Lehner’s asset has been frozen a few days ago. He’s allowed to touch 25k a month for living & legal expenses.
Everything involved Lehner is very complicated. He still owes millions to his creditors.
Sources say a resolution has been reached on Robin Lehner situation with
@GoldenKnights
.
Lehner will NOT be on Vegas’ salary cap this season. Believe Lehner will still be paid.
Big win for the Golden Knights, who likely will not have to operate in LTIR to start the season.
@CBCAlerts
After paying his debt in Sweden, the prime minister of his own country shamed him on national network lol
How many sentence that guy need before people give him another chance?
Reilly Smith cannot be re-acquired with retained salary by Vegas during the 2023-2024 season.
He was on their reserve list in the last 365 days. If something like that happens, it will be this summer.
@frank_seravalli
@StephRDSJunior
Vegas is eliminated by the Stars. Vegas will have the 19th overall pick in the 2024 entry draft.
This elimination confirms Pick 20, 21, 22, 23 too
Here’s the current order.
The NY Islanders are eliminated by the Hurricanes. NYI will have the 18th overall pick in the 2024 entry draft.
Here’s the current order.
If Vegas is eliminated in the first two rounds, the top 20 will be set with Vegas 19th and Tampa 20th (outside of the draft lottery).
He was stressed and searching for words. He was honest and he explained what he wanted to do to improve the Sens on the ice. He said that he wanted to have more people from Gatineau in the arena.
He also said that he wanted to be Ottawa’s owner for a long time.
I will do something that i never do but i will talk about myself for a minute.
Im not the type of person who add a lot of emojis to my tweet or try to be over friendly. When i tweet, it’s always to help/inform/discuss. My goal is never to put down someone or to be mean.

@FriedgeHNIC
Elliotte, it’s basically the same scenario that NYR tried to do in March when they acquired Kane. They created themselves the emergency. It’s not allowed.
It’s a thread and there’s a confirmation of the league included in the thread
NYR had enough cap space to replace Lindgren and Miller after the injury & suspension. Instead of using that money to recall players, NYR decided to spend all their money to acquire Kane.
You cannot create your own emergency situation. The REE was denied
The NHLPA discloses everyone's salary.
The players agreed to disclose their salaries in 1989-90 in order to have more leverage in contract negotiations
The real reason the NHL wants to keep this information private is to pay less.
It's all about money.
On the Jeff Marek Show today, Elliotte Friedman said the main reason why the NHL never bought CapFriendly, or create their own version of it, was because they consider player salaries “confidential information.”
At the end of his contract, Hutson will be a 10.2(c), he will be ineligible to receive and sign offersheet. Montreal will be the only team able to negotiate with him.
I will talk about Muzzin:
This summer, i had a discussion with someone who told me that the NHL would allow a player to work with the team while the player still have an active NHL SPC if
a) the player doesn’t receive additional salary
b) he’s working with his own team.
Tim Thomas 2010-2011
Thomas is 2nd in save % in NHL history in the regular season with .938 behind Jacque Plantes. (Min. 40 GP).
In the playoff, Thomas is 8th in save % in NHL history with .940 (Min. 8 W)
He won the Smythe and the Vezina. He was 36 years old!
If you use Capfriendly or PuckPedia to talk about summer cap situation and you say "teams can exceed the cap by 10% in the summer", you're mixing different rules together.
To avoid any confusion among fans, i will make a thread about summer salary cap vs regular season.
Day 3 of the 2023-2024 off-season. After signing Harvey-Pinard, here's Montreal cap situation in the off-season.
Montreal have a lot of space to sign Newhook, Ylonen or any players they want to sign, even if it's a 1-way contract.
My final estimate for Montréal’s overage penalty in 2024-2025:
23-24 Performance Bonuses:
Slafkovsky: 500k Goals-TOI
Guhle: 420k TOI - Block Shots
Struble: 57.5k GP
Roy: 82.5k GP
Barron: 212.5k TOI
2024-25 overage penalty: 1.272M
Here’s a very early off-season situation for Montreal.
If they are not interested to acquire any players this summer, you can build a roster under 83.5M on Day 1.
Here’s a 22 player roster with a 1.65M of cap space. This example is mostly based on last season roster.
When someone has no sport knowledge of any kind but want to use it for his agenda, we see dumb thing like this.
We’ve seen athletes having cardiac arrest and other trouble like type way before the pandemic. Charlie Kirk was 5 years old when Pronger dropped after that slapshot.
Drew is absolutely incorrect.
1. Deferred salary is included in the cap hit.
2. There's no cap hit after the end of the contract.
3. Marchessault refused to sign a contract with deferred money this summer.
4. Good luck to convince a player to pay him over 30 years.
Jarvis deferral stuff just opened a huge can of worms.
Hypothetical:
Toronto signs McDavjd to a
8-year/136M deal (17M per)
Defer 7M of each year (56M total) into 30 years after
Cap charge of $1.8M on their books 2034-2064
AAV of just $10M for the 8-Years of the deal 👀
It breaks my heart to see Boston breaking Montreal record but greatness is greatness. Being able to do it in the cap era is absolutely mind blowing.
What they did with Bergeron and Krejci was so intelligent, it helped them build their team for their playoff run.
@dsilver88
It doesn’t mean anything. He’s still count against the cap and he’s still paid.
Placing him on non-roster was a no-brainer. He no longer count toward the 23 players limit. You don’t waste a roster spot on a goalie who’s not playing.
NYR had enough cap space to replace Lindgren and Miller after the injury & suspension. Instead of using that money to recall players, NYR decided to spend all their money to acquire Kane.
You cannot create your own emergency situation. The REE was denied
CapFriendly is now offline 1 year later.
CapGeek/General Fanager/CapFriendly.
This is unfortunate. Fans deserve to be well informed. PuckPedia will now have the chance to shine!
Hopefully, they will not join this list. The community needs more than 1 website to stay informed.
This would have never been possible without the interest in the site, which blows me away every day, and keeps me driven to keep adding more. Cheers to another 8 years. 🍻
end.
@BakaLaStrap
@NickMurray91
You cannot stop skating. They already was extremely lucky to have an icing call before that because Hedman did the same thing.
@Coltonpankiw
This is absolutely incorrect.
You need 3 professional season to be eligible to Group 2 RFA. A professional season is 10 pro games when the player is 20 years old or older.
Broberg played 59 pro games in 2021-2022, 62 pro games in 2022-2023 and 73 pro games in 2023-2024.
@MikeWiseguy
3x Hart
3x Ted Lindsay
9x Richard
1x Calder
1x Stanley Cup
1x Conn Smythe
12x All Star
20th in NHL history for points
3rd in NHL history for goals
1st in NHL history for PP goals
2nd in NHL history for GW goals
He will be 1st for GWG and goals before the end of his contract
How does LTIR works? Here’s a thread to talk about every aspect of it.
It will be a very long thread! I will enumerate every different aspect.
I’m a MTL fan so I will use MTL player as an example. It’s the same for every team.
@andrew_kalman
@penguins
So you’re not a conspiracy theorist. But you spread conspiracy theories. Without looking at a prior stroke way before the pandemic. Without doing any kind of research on reliable source. Without looking at which effect COVID has on the heart of someone.
With the Kovacevic trade + the QOs of Xhekaj and Barron, here's the updated situation.
With a projected roster of 20 players, the Habs have 9.3M of projected cap space.
I will also post the off-season cap situation tomorrow night.
@iamhockey1
@GoldenKnights
@TBLightning
No. It doesn’t work like that, at all. Weber still count against the cap. The acquiring team wouldn’t gain any cap space by acquiring him. They would increase their team cap hit by 7.86M and they would add 7,86M on their LTI pool. 7.86 - 7.86M = 0$ gained.
Even if I don't agree with their decision, I will thank CapFriendly. Their website and presence on Twitter educated me a lot about the CBA. I will be forever grateful for that.
Thank You!
After 9 years of late nights, early mornings, missed holidays and family events while diligently updating the website and developing tools, the CapFriendly team has made the decision to begin a new chapter and challenge!
We couldn’t be more thankful for the support
Simply a remainder that Slafkovsky clock for an accrued season is currently at 38/40. If he’s on the NHL active roster for 2 more games this season, he will be one year closer to UFA. Group 3 UFA is 7 accrued seasons or 27 years old.
If they care about that, Friday is the limit
The Canadiens are back home after a tough trip. See how the next couple of weeks go. Whether it’s Slafkovsky or other younger players, I could see time in Laval if Montreal isn’t able to right the ship. Better environment with focus on development.
You have a question about Pinto? Here's a breakdown.
1. There's no deadline to sign Pinto. The December 1 deadline apply to Group 2 RFA. Pinto is not a Group 2 RFA, he's a 10.2(c).
He can also sign after the trade deadline without any problem because he's on OTT reserve list.
This week will be important! Teams will play Game 72. Staying healthy will be important because any new injury will not be eligible to be placed on LTI.
Any players injured in Game 73 or later will not miss 10 games. Therefore, it’s not qualified as a long-term injury.
In 2025-2026,
Slafkovsky’s cap hit will increase by 6.65M
5.291M of dead cap hit will disappear with the end of Petry’s and Allen’s salary retention + no overage penalty.
Having no dead cap will almost pay entirely for his cap increase.
Life changing contract for
#Habs
Juraj Slafkovsky: 8 years x $7.6 mil = $60.8 million.
2025-26: $4.725m sal + $7m SB
2026-27: $4.725m sal + $3m SB
2027-28: $9.725m sal
2028-29: $8m sal
2029-30: $6m sal
2030-31: $5.875m sal
2031-32: $5.875m sal
2032-33: $5.875m sal
Total salary:
1942.
This is the only time in NHL history that a team has rallied from a 0-3 series deficit to win the Stanley Cup Final.
When the name McDavid is involved, nothing is impossible.
Let's go Edmonton! It would be an incredible story.
When a team is relocated, players receives 6000$ as a compensation.
Moving expenses are also paid. Moving expenses can be vehicule importation fee, cancelled least cost, replacing your driver license for example.
Players might be entitled to other reimbursement.
One more note: when the Thrashers moved to Winnipeg, no allowance was made for players to adjust their trade protection. However, Atlanta players who were under contract for the next season were given financial compensation for the move.
@SteveStaeger
Wait a fucking minute? Are you kidding me? The name of the mascot is dinger. DINGER. G-E-R. How do you prononce it Steve?
He pronounced it right.
@FriedgeHNIC
Josh Doan scored 2 goals in his first NHL game. If Shane would have signed better contracts in his career, it would have been a hat trick.
I see a lot of Dadonov hate but i don’t understand why. From Day 1, we knew Dadonov had a negative value. That’s not his fault. He would surely choose to win the Art Ross instead of playing like that.
The plan never was to trade Dadonov at the deadline vs asset.
Gaudreau turned 31 years old this month. We see these NHL players in our everyday life but we don’t often realize how young they are.
My condolences to his family and all the people he loved.
This is unacceptable. Fans need to do better. It's 2024 and I regularly see people on Twitter who don't seem to understand what they can or cant say
Athletes are human. It doesn't matter if you like a player or not, respect is important if you want to talk about someone publicly
What a great contract for Montreal!
Currently, they don’t have any player with a cap hit of 8M or more except for Carey Price.
Their cap situation will be very good when their salary retention will disappear and Price’s contract will be over.
Hutson’s first year is now burned. No game needed. He’s too old to be eligible to slide.
He’s also ineligible to play in the AHL this season, he signed after the deadline.
Les Canadiens s'entendent sur les termes d’un contrat d’entrée de trois saisons (2023-2024 à 2025-2026) avec le défenseur Lane Hutson.
