My soldier’s wife is an aide-de-camp for a two star general. She just had twins. The first babysitter? The MG herself. She gave her ADC the afternoon off to nap, and babysat in the evening so they could have a date night. I call that a servant leader.
I remember when I was on Blackhawk crew changing out ammo, a maneuver that involved manipulating a full ammo can with my non-dominant hand against wind shear. Anyway, today I dropped my phone, reached down off the bed to grab it, and pulled a muscle.
A shoutout to my bonus mom, who dropped everything to take a train from Detroit to DC to be at my promotion. I count myself lucky that I was one of the countless children this fine lady relentlessly mothered.
In 2001, I dropped out of GW to join the army. In 2021, I graduated from GW...because the army sent me. I love the beautiful symmetry of this experience. Thanks to the Army Congressional Fellowship for this amazing group of learners and the masters degree in legislative affairs.
At national airport, leaving for training. My husband yells loudly “Godspeed in pushing out the Donovian aggressors from the allied Krasnovian homeland.” Freaks out the bystanders. +1 milspouse
My first Olympic triathlon complete! It feels like it’s been a long 5 months of 4:30 alarms, Getting over a fear of bikes, re-learning to swim, and an ankle injury to do this crazy thing I’ve been saying for years I wanted to do. I give the credit to the fantastic people at Ytri.
People ask me what it's like to be a veteran. I'll describe it this way: I've been on a text message thread with two battle buddies from my last deployment for over five years now, and it's almost entirely Taco Tuesday references.
Nineteen years ago I joined the Army National Guard, thinking I’d do it for a couple of years and get out. Now, every uniform I got issued at basic training is out of service.
I just read that the White House got a telephone in 1877, but the Oval Office didn't get one until 1923, because it was assumed that it would distract the President from his work.
This is such a overwhelming day. In 2015, I was honored to be selected to serve on the Chief of Staff of the Army’s Operation Enduring Freedom Study Group. Today, the fruits of that labor came into the world as a two volume set published by
@USArmyCMH
It’s a major award! Thanks so much to
@MG_SmithT
for holding this year’s
#miltwitter
premiere event,
#peeptank
. I’m already thinking of ideas for next year!
Woah! What an honor. I just finished a detail to the National Security Council at the White House. I'm forever grateful for the opportunity to learn so much, do so much, and work with such an amazing team.
I’m doing some research on Armories that have been adapted for re-use. I’ve found restaurants, community centers, schools...even a Trader Joe’s! Got one in your town? I’d love to hear about it.
There’s a preschool in my building. Today I’m really identifying with this two year old trying to convince his mom that he NEEDS to wear his swimming goggles and a headlamp to school. Come on, mom. You don’t know what the day holds. Kid is hella prepared.
This photo just came up on memories, and I felt and intense pang of longing for that turtleneck. Flame retardant turtleneck, you were so warm, so cozy, so soft, and gone from me too soon.
Honored to join the Board of Governors at the Army and Navy Club on Farragut Square. I’ve gained so much by getting to know the club through committee work and I’m looking forward to serving its members.
We said goodbye to our sweet Laika girl today. I’m heartbroken, but so grateful we got nine good years with our loving, goofy, gentle girl. You really were the best girl. Thanks for being our dog, Laika.
This morning on my run I tripped on a brick in front of the Supreme Court and wiped out so hard Capitol Police called it in to the EMTs. Nothing hurt other than bumps, bruises and pride. Anyway, how’s your morning going?
The highlight of my life is a friend in a foreign military letting me know how shocked he was when something I wrote was on the syllabus for his PME.
Then he told me he didn’t read it because no one does PME reading in that country, either.
I’m charmed.
I was driving home from training today and felt intrigued by a sign for a state park. I told myself all the reasons not to stop: to get home earlier to beat traffic, do laundry, catch up on work, you know, be a responsible adult. Instead, I pulled over.
I checked out an old library book from the Pentagon library that smells deeply of tobacco. As much as I’m sad for the book, I’m charmed by the idea of a WWII soldier reading that book and chain smoking in an office somewhere.
A buddy of mine asked what a half Ironman triathlon was today, and I had him going for a while that it was hopping on one foot, kicking only swimming, and a unicycle ride.
I’m honored to announce I was elected the new Presiding Trustee of the Anne S.K. Brown Military Collection at
@BrownUniversity
. The ASKB is the world’s largest privately held collection of military art, best known for its charming toy soldier collection.
I can’t believe how fast 20 years in the army National Guard has gone. It’s hard to only grab a few photos when this job has taken me around the world and brought me some of my best friends and best experiences.
I’ve noticed that
@waze
shows real estate listings in the app now. I want the same thing for roadside historical plaques that I drive by too fast to read. That way as a passenger I can read all the history of my route as I go.
No one: I’d like to learn more about Women’s Military History from the comfort of the internet
Me: cool, July 18th we’ll be live-streaming Towards a More Inclusive Military History at
Charmingly odd moments at the Pentagon: an admiral and I reach for the last valentine at the CVS at the same time. Each of us insists the other take it. It is a 3D pop-up of a pug puppy in a kissing booth. We both end up walking away from it.
Today I learned about the Tabasco marketing ploy that created a lifelong military-Tabasco love affair. It started out with a $1 kit to mail to your Soldier in Vietnam—Tabasco and hilarious cookbook included.
