Cincinnati Black History…The Underground Railroad. Cincinnati was a very important stop on the NORTH route of the Underground Railroad. As many black Americans looked to seek refuge in free cities, Cincinnati, at the time one of the largest cities in American, was also a safe haven for slaves. Many of the Foundational Black Americans planned on going to Canada once they reached the shores of the mighty Ohio river. But stayed once they found work and homes in the Cincinnati area. Today tensions still exist between white residents and black residents. In August 2004, @FreedomCenter was built on the Banks close to the shore of the Ohio River to commemorate the many struggles of the black Americans who were traveling to find freedom.
