My first year in scouting, I was responsible for weighing players in before & after practice. I sat next to the scale with a clipboard & pen. Ray Lewis would walk by, without breaking stride and yell “245”. I didn’t ask any questions— just wrote it down.
I’m 41 years old and I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life. However, forgetting to pack my headphones before this 5 hour flight is my greatest failure.
Yesterday, I asked Griffin what he was going to run and he replied, “what do you think is fast?” I said, “For a linebacker, 4.60.” He replied, “I didn’t say linebacker, I said what do you think is fast.” Now I know what he meant. 438!!
Kyler Murray ran the ball 13 times for 91 yards. He slid, went out of bounds or scored on 12 of the 13 runs. He was only tackled one time (pulled down by the shirt). He's mastered the ability to protect himself on the move. It's teaching tape for athletic QB's.
If Watson became available via trade, the Jets should call. You could trade 2nd pick this year (they still have 23rd pick), 1st in 2022 (They have 2) & 1st in 2023. That’s 3 first round picks. They could pickup extra pick/picks if they traded Sam. (My gift to sports radio)
Woke up feeling very excited for tonight but also really missing my friend. I cherished the time we had together at this event every year. Miss you Mort!
25 years ago today, I went on my 1st date with my best friend’s older sister. We went with a group to watch the movie Scream. I remember it like it was yesterday. Since then- marriage, 4 kids & a quarter century of amazing memories together. Feeling incredibly blessed!!
We’re about 2-3 years away from personnel departments not caring about 40 times. The game GPS data is going to replace it. Who cares what he ran in the 40, I know exactly how fast he ran in game conditions & I have 5 years of data for context.
The BUF/KC playoff game was a turning point moment in the NFL. The quality of QB play was off the charts and it had to hit home with every HC/GM/Owner. Is my QB good enough to compete with that???
The Chargers last 4 first round picks
Melvin Gordon
Joey Bosa
Mike Williams
Derwin James
That's an outstanding young nucleus for the future. Tom Telesco and his staff have done a fantastic job building this team.
Just finished Joe Burrow throws vs BAL. That was a clinic. Every type of throw- on time, off schedule, layer throws, drive throws, big time anticipation throws, 3rd or 4th in progression...you name it. Money.
Friendly reminder: NFL Personnel departments don't care about college awards. I sat in draft meetings for 8 years, we never mentioned Heisman, Outland, 1st team all conference etc...It doesn't carry any weight.
2 final thoughts:
1) Andy Reid has always been an outstanding coach. This is just the cherry on top.
2) Holy crap is Patrick Mahomes going to get paid.
I had a routine medical procedure today. Asked my wife if the DR visited with us in recovery room. She said yes. I said I don’t remember any of it. What did I say? She said I told him where Tua was getting picked. 😂
My 13 yr old son photoshopped a PS5 box into a pic of our family room and texted it to my 17 yr old son. He fell for it. That’s equally creative and cruel.
@Chargers
QB Philip Rivers shows
@Raiders
no respect today, mocking them here: “Nice defense, huh?” He then yells for all to hear which route he wants Virgil Green to run!
Everyone has their own definition of a number 1 WR. For me, it's this-- on 3rd down & in the RZ, everyone in the stadium knows where the ball is going and the defense can't do anything about it. Rome Odunze is a number 1 WR.
Joe Douglas took a team with minimal talent & depth and he’s built a playoff caliber team capable of overcoming injuries to several of their top players. Future is incredibly bright for Jets.
If you were going to pick the player most likely to have HOF career in this draft class, I think the overwhelming choice around the NFL would be Kyle Pitts.
5 Takeaways from Jets
1) Zach Wilson is an effortless thrower. Free and easy.
2) Team speed is much improved.
3) Elijah Moore is special. Tyler Lockett clone.
4) Deep at RB. Committee approach makes sense.
5) Robert Saleh is a stud.
If I’m Indy, here’s the million dollar question— would you rather spend the 4th pick on the 4th best QB in the class or trade that pick and next year’s 1 for Lamar Jackson. Obviously, the money is drastically different but I still think it’s an easy call.
I think you’ll enjoy this... We were given this handout during a scout school from my time with the Ravens. Coach Belichick has held true to almost all of this over the years.
He’ll kill me but I think this is worth sharing. Mayock has texted me the morning of the draft every year since he left to be a GM. He always includes advice & encouragement. He continues to be a great teammate. Hope everyone enjoys tonight ! So blessed to have a front row seat!
The 2011 NFL Draft class should be a documentary one day. 7 of the top 11 picks will be Hall of Famers.
Cam Newton (1)
Von Miller (2)
AJ Green (4)
Patrick Peterson (5)
Julio Jones (6)
Tyron Smith (9)
JJ Watt (11)
I’ll go on record here and say Ryan Fitzpatrick will quickly emerge as a star in broadcasting. He’s brilliant, great sense of humor, self-deprecating & fearless. I hope he’s given the freedom to do whatever he wants to do. Excited to watch!
So much predraft talk/comparison between Ole Miss WRs DK Metcalf and AJ Brown. Through 4 games:
Metcalf 10 catches for 223 yards
Brown 10 catches for 223 yards
Chargers safety Nasir Adderley shows crazy acceleration into this tackle. Watch his last 3 steps before contact. His confidence is starting to grow every week. 😳
When I started scouting in 2003, most teams allowed scouts and coaches to see the draft board. By 2012, most teams only allowed 3-4 people (HC/GM/Personnel Director/College Director) to have access to the board. This isn’t that unusual.

coach Jon Gruden and GM Mike Mayock sent their scouts home for the weekend and they are not expected to return by draft time. The belief is they don’t know who to trust and wanted to clear the room.
