I was 22 when I qualified as a Medical Dr. At 25, I met a patient in Tembisa, elderly lady.
She was excited & proud to see a young Dr. For her, Dr's were older.
I told her, 'It was only through your past struggles that I could become a Dr at my age.'
Happy Youth Day Mzantsi 🙏🏿
Sandile Cele. Remember his name. He's the scientist credited for coming up with a creative way to grow a live virus of the variant 501Y.V2 in Durban, South Africa. Let's congratulate him, show him support. One day soon we'll hear his story
@Sandile_Cele22
It's not a new strain, only a variant. It's not a second wave, but a second surge. They are not non-pharmaceutical interventions, but behavioural, social, economic, environmental interventions etc. But of course this is SA, we're still gonna call them Strain, Wave and NPIs. 🤷🏾♂️
Canada will no longer accept PCR tests from South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, eSwatini, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria and Egypt. You must have a test result from a third country, presumablyin transit. Unbelievable!😤
It was never a battle between the pro-vax and the anti-vax.
It was always a battle between Everyone and Covid-19.
It's up to you how you contribute to the solution.✌🏿
The Minister
@DrZweliMkhize
is engaging very comfortably with the science of Covid-19. He's showing a much deeper understanding of the nuances in his articulation. He's even brought together 'competing' scientific groups to the same table. Say what you will, but this is progress.
"Qualifications shouldn't matter" Then why did I have to spend 5 mins on Radio laying out my degrees AND experience, in order to convince the audience that I'm qualified to speak on Covid-19. Seriously? So it's no longer enough that I'm a Professor of Public Health. Unbelievable!
As South Africa declares an end to the National State of Disaster, I wish to take this momentous occasion to celebrate every single person who contributed to the fight against Covid-19 in the past two years, and to pay my deep respects to all those we lost during the pandemic. 🙏🏿
If a family member suffered serious disease or died following Covid-19 vaccination, please report to the
@HealthZA
Compensation Fund. Until the causal relationship is verified, there'll be no evidence to support such claims.
@SAHPRA1
has a duty to protect the public and report.
South Africa should respond to Omicron with the following policies:
1. Mandatory vaccination
2. Boosters for vulnerable groups
3. Rapid Covid-19 antigen tests
4. Compulsory case isolation, contact tracing & quarantine
5. Measures to combat airborne transmission
What else?
I am truly humbled by all your wonderful comments and messages of support. It's an honour for me to lead research and innovation at UKZN, and to join the ranks of academic research leaders in the country. Most grateful 🙏🏿
A ministerial award for Covid-19 science communication is not something I could have anticipated.
I am very grateful to all of you for making this possible, and most importantly, those who listened.
I am dedicating it to those most deserving, healthcare workers in the frontline!
Mxolisi, with respect bhuti, you're not qualified to debate on the science of vaccines, any vaccine whatsoever. You can say such things to your peers for fun and games, but my time is not for such.
Now that South Africa has detected Covid-19 cases of B 1.617.2 dominant in India and B 1.1.7 dominant in the UK, in addition to our own variant of concern B 1.351, we can all accept that the collision of these variants raises alarm given the arrival of a 3rd Wave. 1/n
South Africa just crossed the golden milestone of 10% adults fully vaccinated today on Friday 13th. 🥳Since we're already over 18% when we include partial vaccination, 20% coverage is already knocking...🙌🏿🕺🏿
One more time, the battle against Covid-19 is not fought and won in hospitals. If you're fighting in hospitals, you're conceding defeat. The aim is to eliminate new infections, not treat cases of severe Covid-19.
The next time you want to bring videos on my timeline to peddle anti vax agenda, remember that Virology is not your lane. I told you that it's better if I don't respond, you pursued. Yet you're more fragile than you realise. Try to stay away from Virology if you can help it.
@MoshabelaMosa
I am not your responsibility.
Whether am vaccinated or not is none of your busines.
Just stay in your lane.
There is no-one in this world that can decide what is good for me, including you and Ramaphosa's task team.
Stop peddling falsehoods that you have zero evidence of.
Nsika Sithole, nurse by profession, inspired by his mom, domestic worker who became a nurse. Approached me 2017 without Honours, but wanted a Masters. He did PG Diploma (2018), Masters (2019/20). Now Cum Laude graduate, just published in AIDS & Behavior (IF 3.3) as lead author.
Today, Sefako Makgatho University is launching a clinical trial on Sinovac for children & adolescents. The vaccine uses a de-activated whole SARS-COV-2 virus, a more traditional style of vaccine technology. The phase 3 clinical trial includes 2000 participants. Congrats to SMU!🙌🏿
South Africa has 5 months of Covid-19 vaccines, 16.8 million doses in stock.
The rest of our people don't want these vaccines, but none of the doses should expire on our watch.
We give our government permission to donate or sell to our neighboring African countries.
The SA Vaccination Program does not need approval from the UK.
The UK is advancing its own interests in keeping SA on the red list, not ours.
They exempted Kenya, where they donated their AZ vaccine, the one we dumped.
Stay focused Mzantsi, get vaxxed!
Omicron significantly escapes immunity (antibodies) induced by Pfizer vaccine, compared to the ancestral SARS-CoV-2.
It seems vaccinated individuals are likely to suffer mild disease, and boosters likely to provide an additional layer of protection.
Don't ever let anyone gaslight or demean you for being educated, esp. not on social media.
However old you are, make sure you get education, and qualifications, as many as opportunity allows you.
You can build more knowledge, experience, expertise, logic etc on top of education.
South Africa is set to destroy 80 000 vaccine doses of Pfizer due to expire on 31st March 2022.
In addition, more than 400 000 doses of vaccines were lost through wastage, unused open vials.
We want vaccine equity and justice, and we must show up by not wasting vaccine doses. 🙏🏿
I am so very grateful to the Public Health Association of South Africa
@PublicHealthSA
for recognising my contribution to Public Health.
I owe a debt of gratitude to a large network of collaborators and students locally, nationally, regionally and globally. 🙏🏿🙏🏿

Don't ever forget it took a pandemic for many of us to learn how to practice basic hygiene:
Proper hand washing and sanitising,
Cleaning of surfaces,
Cough etiquette,
Physical distancing in a queue,
Indoor ventilation.
Remember, these are basic hygiene practices, for everyone. 🙏🏿

The SA Taxi Vaccination Centre in Midrand is awesome. The young man in charge of the emergency room stood out the most. After 12 700 doses, he's not had a single case of anaphylaxis, but spends most of the time stabilizing newly discovered cases of Hypertension and Diabetes. 👌🏿
It's fair to expect a move to Alert Level 1 in SA by end of this week.
It's also reasonable to expect no further lockdowns in December.
Only if SA vaccinates minimum 200 000 a day, and one million a week.
SA could reach 50% fully vaccinated adults by end of November.
The new variant B.1.1.529 appears to replace Delta, as South Africa enters the 4th wave.
The variant is concerning because it seems to be highly transmissable and can evade immunity, both.😳
The new variant will be reviewed, classified and named by the World Health Organization.
NB. Two doses of Pfizer vaccine will still give you 33% protection against INFECTION with Omicron.
The same two Pfizer doses will give you 70% protection against hospital admission with SEVERE Covid-19.

I hear from people who want to take Covid-19 vaccines, but are simply afraid. They report fear of the needle itself, fear of side effects or fear of breakthrough infection with Covid-19. These people are pro-vaccine, but just on the fence. It takes courage to acknowledge fear.
My appreciation for all academics, students, graduates, alumni, partners and collaborators

University of KwaZulu-Natal ranked fourth best university in Africa | Witness
Western Cape broke the scale today, thanks to young adults.
The daily record of vaccinations was 38,500 and today WC exceeded 53,000 vaccinations per day.
A whopping 40% increase in WC, OK almost...
Gauteng also reached a new high of 71,000 from a record of 67,000.
The monstrous 3rd wave comes to an end.
Although we don't yet know what the next few months have in store for us, we can at least draw comfort in knowing we have overcome Delta and the 3rd wave.
Tribute to everyone who played a role, big or small, in bringing us to this point.
No ‘thought leader’ living in South Africa today, who is conscientious and humane, will argue against the National Health Insurance Bill.
You must be absolutely ruthless to argue against a piece of legislation that attempts to reduce the health gap between the rich and the poor.
Friends, I thank all of you for your warm and kind words of support. Your encouragement make hard work feel like such light work.
@KhulaniQoma
I'm truly humbled by your wonderful message. I too am thankful for the many people working behind the scenes to make it all possible.🙏🏿
Good morning wonderful people! 🙌🏿
I wanted to say happy new year, but it seems misery loves company. 🤧
Here's to wishing you good health, peace and compassion. 🥂
Remember to "Be kinder than necessary!" 🙏🏿
The virus has made small changes to itself, so that it can survive. Someone called it 'updates' like on your phone. The changes are just small adjustments, like getting new car tyres, hence variation. It did not change the whole operating system, it's still the same 'model'.

Before you cast aspersions & smear the Covid-19 case surveillance data we receive every evening at 19h00 in South Africa, think about the effects of your words on the HCWs and scientists who generate it, AND, every single case diagnosed represents a whole person, a human being.
If you passed Covid-19 to a colleague, friend or family, you may suffer emotional and mental health problems.
If death occurred, Covid-19 death is premature death, your symptoms may be more pronounced.
Make plans to seek professional help, do not self-destruct with substances.
Reminder: 50% of adults in South Africa are vaccinated. That's 1 in every 2 adults.
Cold Fact: 50% is enough for South Africa to move on, end state of disaster, and protect economy.
Sadly: the ones left behind are NOT only the antivaxxers, but the ones on the margins of society.
Some people lost their parents prematurely to Covid-19, and are therefore not able to celebrate Mother's Day as they normally do. May this day be kind to you, and bring you warm and wonderful memories. Happy Mother's Day 🙏🏿
If you feel frustrated with the new changes to the regulations on isolation and quarantine, your feelings are valid.
Whilst the changes are necessary, but they are confusing for the public, and this confusion is really unfortunate.
Know the facts. Know the sources. Know the message.
Know the context. Know the audience. Know the values.
Know the benefit. Know the risks. Know the impact.
Know the limits of public health communication during a pandemic.
We keep reinforcing the fact that ours is a curative health system, and it's got nothing to do with other forms of interventions except medication. Well, this virus is reminding us that social sciences and humanities are just as important as basic and clinical sciences.
For one moment, consider the amount of time, effort & skill it requires to read, process & synthesize the evidence on Covid-19 and vaccines, & then present these facts in ways that are accessible & digestible to the general public. Don't thank us, we love it, just be mindful.🤓✌🏿
In conclusion, my rant is about this careless use of concepts or words. I complained about NPIs until I let it go. I corrected 'second wave' until I started to sound pedantic. Now we're going to be saying a New Strain, and I'm already preparing myself to just allow at some point.
Ok, I'll explain my tweet, not my intention to sound condescending.
I'm very happy that the public is getting new information, this is empowering in uncertain times.
But I'm unhappy with the loose ways in which language is being handled, amounts to misinformation.
Travel bans are delaying the analysis on T cell data in SA, as reagents are now stuck in Dubai.
Without the data, it's difficult to inform policy decisions on how to manage the Omicron 4th wave.
Our diplomats need to urgently intervene, time is life, and we are wasting days.
This is what TRAVEL BANS do: Our collaborators
@SetteLab

On this day, 3rd of March 2020, we announced the launch of the 'war room' against Covid-19
@UKZN
.
At the time, we had no known Covid-19 cases in SA.
I was told we are overreacting, putting up a Muppet show for attention and using offensive war language.
I understand the wheels of politics are turning, but our health system deserves a more nuanced analysis.
What we are not going to do is apportion blame to foreign nationals for the failures of our health system.
South Africa is about to receive the second batch of the J&J vaccine. In the past week, we have used approx half of the first batch ~ 40,000. Winter is coming, we should be vaccinating ~100,000 HCWs per week to complete Phase 1 before the 3rd wave, and cover rural HCWs as well.
As the 3rd wave takes hold in SA, the TL is going to carry very sad news of Covid-19 and death, accompanied by a lot of anger, frustration and anxiety. Brace yourselves, and remember to be kind! 🙏🏿

Kanti what does it mean to be a Public Protector?
Let me get this straight, the Public Protector is telling doctors and nurses to use 'existing drugs' to manage Covid-19 patients?
What does this mean madam? Need to first understand before I respond.
If you still think we're dealing with a temporary spike in SA, think again.
Our 3-day positivity rate Wed 24th 3.6%, Thu 25th 6.5%, Fri 26th 9.1%.
For all intents and purposes, South Africa has entered the 4th wave.🤷🏿♂️
There's nothing we don't already know in that 38-page Pfizer report on adverse events. The first 29 pages are of substance, and the 9-page Appendix is a list of adverse events of special interest. I have not seen the 55 000 page report. 🙏🏿
Our Covid-19 testing is low, largely because our policy was changed in February, but also following the many holidays in April & May.
Nevertheless, tonight's report is nearly 10 000 cases, and positivity 26%. I really do not need to say anything further. Be safe 🙏🏿
We finally dipped below the 7-day daily average of 5000 cases in SA. Well done Mzantsi, let's keep those masks on, avoid gatherings, ventilate rooms and get vaccinated.
Proportion of fully vaccinated 18+ adults in South Africa:
13th Aug 10%
31st Aug 15%
20th Sep 20%
11th Oct 25%
One in four adults are now fully vaccinated...
I think the self-proclaimed dissenting voices on Twitter who do not want to be labeled antivaxxers would have you believe that majority of adult South Africans are not yet vaccinated. You read the graph and decide for yourself, but yea, the train is moving with or without you.🙏🏿
Let's agree that vaccines are now the standard of care for Covid-19.
If you gonna kick and scream, your choice. Kodwa, oksalayo, vaccines are now the standard of care.😷
The amount of data that came through today, and amount of work completed already is just incredible.
Shout out to all the scientists bringing us fresh data. The evidence on Omicron is building up.👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

10 800 cases in Gauteng,17 493 cases in the country.
Yes, they're only a fraction of the true numbers, we all know.
Yes, these cases will soon be followed by deaths.
No, vaccines will not stop the cases nor the deaths.
Respectfully, we all knew the third wave was imminent. 🙏🏿
Western Cape: Almost 70% of health workers vaccinated.
"At the height of the 1st wave, we had 4 525 health workers infected; height of 2nd wave, we had 3 633 infected. Now, we only had 679 infected.
"This does go to show the protection the vaccine offers."
Technically speaking, a new wave is present when when the first wave ends, usually because the strain is eliminated, and the cases have gone back to baseline. Our cases never got to baseline, so the same strain was still lurking around waiting to surge again, and it is now...
Misinformation is a harmful weapon, a missile that can kill people indiscriminately.
Casualties and bodies are piling up, especially among the most vulnerable.
If you thought it's just fun and games, think again, and be sure harm is what you seek.
As we celebrate the festive season with family and friends, let us remember that a pandemic tore us apart, and left us wounded and scarred.
We owe a huge debt to health workers, scientists and everyone who played their part. We pay tribute to those we lost. Lest we forget…🙏🏿

If the virus changed to a new model, like going from iPhone 7 to iPhone 8 or 9, then we would be considering a new strain, which would have more serious implications. It would be like dealing with a new virus all over again. We would all be panicking, but thankfully, it's not.
If you're a health care worker in SA, make use of the opportunity to get your booster shot, Sisonke 2 or otherwise, the where doesn't really matter. What matters is that you get your shot. Booster shots will soon open to other priority groups.
Dear President, you cheated on us with Johnson & Johnson, and now you're ghosting us, your fellow South Africans.
We forgave you for jumping the queue, apparently for our sake, to inspire us to take the vaccine - the gaslights🤦🏿
Anyway, we are still here, patiently waiting...🤷🏿♂️
Your known contacts need to be informed when you're diagnosed with an infectious disease.
Examples: Influenza, Covid-19, TB, Hepatitis, HPV, other STIs...
You may survive, others may not. When people know, they're empowered to take precautions.
@MzwaneleManyi
Argh Manyi you're wasting my time. All I care about is that you're vaccinated. The rest means nothing to me. You'll get to know me in time.
The first concern about this new development is that the virus changed in three areas, which is unusual. It's rare to see this virus loading three updates at the same time. Second is the amount of the new variant, the viral load, is higher than others. It comes in a bigger dose.
So did Pfizer admit its jab was not tested? Thought the statement was about vaccine studies on transmission dynamics at the time of registering the for use under emergency authorisation. Why is this framed as though clinical efficacy trials were not done?

I used the word effectiveness in an interview on vaccines, and not efficacy. We were talking about the proposed Oxford/Astra-Zeneca 'research', not as a clinical trial under 'ideal' conditions, but a study under 'real' world conditions. More semantics...🤓
Everyone is so used to 'second wave' that it's become futile to try and correct this, so we just say 'second wave' to maintain common understanding. In the greater scheme of things, it doesn't really matter. The problem is we are making this a habit, and we add to misinformation.
