New story for @TheAtlantic has nothing to do with politics and doesn’t use the word “virus” once. But it’s about how someone who felt trapped in her life decided to escape. And it gets a little crazy.

About 15 years ago, when this country really needed good, trustworthy journalism that was free to consume, some of those enemies started seeking revenge. These constitutionally protected ads that used ambiguous language to sell sex became a target…

Any corporate or political interest. Journalists felt no obligation to tell the audience things they already agreed with. But the funding that allowed this great, free journalism to exist ultimately became its Achilles heel…

The newspapers ran ads for restaurants and bars, but most of the money came from classified ads. Specifically adult classifieds. These were mostly ads for sex workers using coded language, some legal (strippers) and some less legal. That meant the company wasn’t beholden to…

This brand of no-sacred-cows journalism made a lot of enemies across the political spectrum. Plenty of people cast doubts on the veracity of these papers, but often that just meant even more readers. The problem was how the outlets were funded…

New Times, and later Village Voice Media. The company owned free weekly newspapers in almost every big city in America and covered everyone from every party with a skeptical eye. A ton of the best journalists in the country cut their teeth in these newsrooms. But…

Yep. This. Absolutely horrible feeling envious of Washington fans right now. It’s unnatural!

There is not a single ounce of joy or fun in following the Cowboys organization right now. They don’t play a fun style of football, the offense is archaic and boring and lacks electric players, the defense doesn’t make any big plays - and then all that is happening off of the field related to this team is so Effing tired and stale. Same crap over and over. I wish there was something there that had any entertainment value at all whatsoever. The best stories of the season involve media dudes? Seriously? Brutal.

@mhp_guy It’s good! And they encourage mixing so you can create your own concoction. (Plus they have all the accessories: lemons, oranges, etc. set out like a salsa bar.)

@JonnyAuping I’d read anything you write for them, obviously. But I’m secretly hoping you write the astrology stuff.
