The Monte and The Pharaoh Feud: Konnan's Struggles with Criticism Let's take a trip back to the mid-'90s, when the wrestling world was ablaze with personalities, egos, and drama. If you were anywhere near WCW at the time, you’d know there was a lot more than just wrestling going on behind the scenes. What came from this is ,One of the most bizarre, and somewhat hilarious, rivalries involved Konnan, the self-proclaimed “Mexican legend,” and Monte and Pharaoh — a duo that wasn’t afraid to throw some serious let’s take a step back. Konnan is often hailed as a trailblazer for Mexican wrestling, but let’s not sugarcoat it. His promo skills were… well, let’s just say they were a work in progress. If there was one thing Konnan knew how to do, it was make everything about himself — and he wasn’t shy about telling the world that he was a “legend”. But here’s the catch: in Mexico, sure, Konnan was a big deal. But when it came to WCW, the truth hurt a bit more. He wasn’t exactly blowing fans away with his wrestling ability. If you rank him on a scale from 1 to 10, he’d fall somewhere around a 4. His in-ring skills were, at best, average, and his look — well, if you closed your eyes, he looked like every other Mexican wrestler of that era. If it weren't for Kevin Nash putting in a good word and getting Konnan a huge WCW contract, it's safe to say Konnan might have been working the night shift at your local Walmart, stocking shelves and pondering what could have been. But hey, legends are legends, right? So, in Mexico, Konnan had his claim to fame. He was revered in the lucha libre scene, but when he made his move to the United States, the gap between perception and reality became painfully obvious. Konnan's Ability to Handle Criticism: Not His Strongest Suit Let’s be real: Konnan didn’t take criticism too well. Any time someone dared to say that his wrestling wasn’t exactly top-tier, he’d puff up his chest, get defensive, and go into full "legend mode." And boy, did he love to remind people about his legacy, often ignoring the fact that while he might’ve been a big fish in the small pond of Mexico, in WCW, he was swimming with sharks. And sharks don’t do average. That’s where the Monte and Pharaoh feud came in. These two weren’t afraid to call out Konnan’s shortcomings, and boy, did they ever. They went in on his lack of promo skills, his poor ring work, and the fact that he looked like any other luchador in the company (which, by the way, wasn’t exactly helping his cause). Konnan, never one to shy away from drama, fired back with more of the same, but without the wrestling chops to back up his bravado, the feud turned into a circus of insults and ego checks. Mexican Legends: Not All Are Created Equal Now, let’s talk about Konnan’s Mexican legend status. He might be revered by some, but let’s be honest: there are a lot of other Mexican wrestlers who didn’t exactly get the same treatment. Sure, Konnan had his moments, but here are three other legends that are, let’s say, a bit underrated (and by underrated, I mean maybe you’ve never heard of them unless you’re really deep into the Mexican wrestling Super Porky (Brazo de Oro) – When your wrestling persona is based around being a big guy and your nickname is “Super Porky,” you know you’ve got a career ahead of you. This guy wasn’t exactly doing flips off the top rope, but you could always count on him for some slapstick comedy in the ring. Definitely a “legend” for a very specific audience — and that audience was very much into In the end, Konnan’s career is one of interesting contradictions. A Mexican legend in some circles, but in the U.S. wrestling world, his skills were less-than-stellar, and his ego didn’t always match the reality of his wrestling abilities. If he hadn’t been buddy-buddy with Kevin Nash, the world of WCW would’ve probably been a bit different, and Konnan might have been wrestling in smaller indie promotions, or managing a cash register at your local Walmart
