Chatty activist w/gratuitous commentary. PhD researcher
@TJI_
conventions, parliamentary procedure, human rights, CoE Treaties and intl law are my jams.
My Great Uncle Ronnie, a wee Belfast working class fella who became a WWII veteran, serving in Africa, France, and Italy, died this morning. He was 97. During the war, he was mentioned in dispatches for bravery; he always told us to think of others and put them before ourselves.
Today: remember Patrick 'Giuseppe' Conlon, one of the Maguire Seven, wrongly convicted on explosives charges relating to the Guildford pub bombings.
Giuseppe died on this day in 1980, four years into a prison sentence.
He was a victim of a horrendous miscarriage of justice.
A group of fellas thought it was funny to make “clip clop” noises and snigger behind me as I walked up stairs; UG Leah would have died a death, but PGR Leah turned around and STARED at them until one of them apologised
Tomorrow: all eyes are on the UK Supreme Court, which will be delivering judgment in a very significant and topically relevant case - the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission's challenge to the current law governing termination of pregnancy in NI.
In the middle of essays and dissertation preparations, a PSA: I’m thrilled to say I have been awarded a scholarship and PhD studentship with Ulster University. ✨
Full-time parliamentary studies and human rights research ahoy!
I cannot believe I am typing this, but I am so honoured to say that

@YESocialists
I am so grateful for this trust+opportunity, and respect the responsibility which comes with it. I won’t let ye down. 🌹
I come from a unionist background. I completely agree with Doug Beattie - this bonfire is not culture. It is upsetting for families and survivors, it is grossly sectarian, and it is disrespectful.
Come on ffs...... attacking victims, threats based on religion...... burning the National flag of Ireland & electoral posters. This is not unionist culture. Absolutely pathetic. 😡
I interrupt this day of Brexit to bring ye Personal News.
Between working full-time, undertaking party work+activism, +an unexpected hospital adventure in the summer - this gal has passed her dissertation with flying colours, and will be graduating with her MA in December. 💃🏼
After a night of coughing and continuous fever, I’m calling it - I’ll be self-isolating (see: cocooning under blankets) for the next while. Take care and stay safe, friends - wash your hands, keep hydrated, and

Remembering the LGBT activist and advocate, Mark Ashton today.
With his friend Mike Jackson, he was a co-founder of
@LGSMpride
He died on 11th February 1987, eighteen months after the end of the miners’ strike, and 11 days after he was diagnosed with Aids.
He was just 26.
Today: the anniversary of the death of Sophie Scholl. She was a student, anti-Nazi political activist+member of the White Rose non-violent resistance group. Aged 21, she was guillotined after being convicted of treason for distributing anti-war leaflets at LMU w/her brother Hans.
Today: I think of Patrick 'Giuseppe' Conlon, one of the Maguire Seven, wrongly convicted on explosives charges relating to the Guildford pub bombings.
Giuseppe died on this day in 1980, 4 years into a prison sentence. He was a victim of a horrendous miscarriage of justice.

Sometime in early 2017 I wore a jumpsuit that was styled to look like a pantsuit in Belfast, and I had two fellas ask me at the bus stop, “here Hilary, how did ye lose to Donald trump?”
I am at once both ecstatic and humbled to have been offered a place on the

Class of 2021. I cannot wait to meet fellow class members, and embark on this adventure of knowledge exchange and self-development together! So grateful to WIP for this amazing opportunity.
My mum is from the Shankill. My grandparents and great-grandparents were proud Shankill folk. I spent a lot of my childhood on the Road, going for walks with my granny.
Today is a painful day.
Thinking of those families affected by the Shankill bomb, grieving for loved ones.
Daily reminder that having a position on the constitutional question, unionist or nationalist, does not automatically make ye sectarian, and we should not automatically assign any connotation or assumption to political aspirations of unionism or nationalism.
Brilliant news: the amazing CAIN has been rescued at the eleventh hour after the Irish government announced funding for a new project.
“But additional resources must still be found to secure its long-term future.”
One of these is not like the other.
Last weekend’s protests re BLM: checks on roads, cautions issued, warnings of fines and prosecutions
This weekend’s protests re protecting statutes: requests to stay away
Today, I proposed a motion for the decriminalisation of termination of pregnancy, and reform of current NI law to allow for exceptions for FFA, rape, and incest on human rights grounds at
@SDLPyouth
policy conference in accordance with human rights standards.
It passed.

A day when fans across this island are united and together in supporting their team in the WRC, and this is the divisive attitude ye take? I’m a planter, I’m Irish, and that’s my team out there too, regardless of flag or anthem.
“Must we bend and stretch each dialect of Scots to fit one homogenous standard? Or is it possible for us to acknowledge the Scots language not as one swatch of cloth, but a patchwork… each square no less valid than those surrounding it.”
Thir! Thir bis hit!
half of the people of "northern ireland " don't want to be british.
The clue is "northern IRELAND"
it is time the english go home and take their planters home.

Ya girl has passed her dissertation with flying colours; I was awarded a distinction and after the months of uncertainty and disruption caused by Covid and lockdown, I could cry with happiness 💃🏼
Can we all remember that whilst Boris Johnson resigns as Foreign Secretary, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe - whose defence he undermined by saying he was teaching journalism when she wasn't - remains imprisoned and is facing a second trial in Iran.
Happy Birthday to John Hume: a giant of the civil rights movement, a believer in reconciliation of people, and an architect of the peace process. He is a Nobel laureate, champion of social justice, social democracy, solidarity, intl co-operation+human rights.
An inspiration.
This is your reminder that abortion is illegal in NI, is governed by laws from 1861 and 1945, and only permitted if there is a risk of life or physical/mental harm to pregnant person.
There are no exceptions for pregnant survivors of rape or incest, or for cases of severe FFA.
Today: I think of Patrick 'Giuseppe' Conlon, one of the Maguire Seven, wrongly convicted on explosives charges relating to the Guildford pub bombings.

I feel so angry on behalf of parents and students in the South now; if we had to buy our textbooks, exercise books etc may family would have struggled to afford school!
40 years ago today, Harvey Milk was assassinated.
Elected to San Francisco Board of Supervisors, he was first non-incumbent openly gay man in US to win election for public office+began tenure by sponsoring civil rights bill outlawing discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Happy 82nd Birthday to John Hume: a giant of the civil rights movement, a believer in reconciliation of people, an architect of the peace process. A Nobel laureate, champion of social justice, social democracy, solidarity, international co-operation+human rights. An inspiration.
I will not lie. As a woman in NI, I felt goosebumps as I watched so, so many MPs stand up with

this evening to show their support for her emergency debate motion to repeal s58 and 59 of the OAP Act 1861.

rumours of Michael Gove being suggested as a possible interim leader to replace May - nothing says UK gov commitment to upholding GFA+peace process / Tory understanding of both than having a man who once compared GFA to appeasement of the Nazis in 1930s in post.
Today, I was faced with some questions (!) about my research focus, and how it “conflates” or “contradicts” my own personal community background.
Academic twitter, it is time for a discussion about the positioning of a researcher and their research interests / focus.
Daily reminder that the phrases “PUL community” and “CNR community” are fairly stereotypical, serve to reinforce entrenched binaries and the concept your religious / cultural background always denotes your political affiliation. Be open-minded in your thinking and discussions
I see the Daily Mail has seized on photographs showing Jeremy Corbyn was present at Paul Hill's wedding, referring to Paul Hill as "a convicted IRA bomber at the time" and conveniently omitting how Paul Hill+rest of Guildford Four were innocent+victims of miscarriage of justice.
I have typed and re-typed this, but essentially I am so disappointed by the majority decision carried by the UUSU meeting last night with regards to not support UCU Ulster.
It is a particularly disappointing outcome as a PhD Researcher.
Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine. In the shelter of each other we must live.
Moved to tears by Seamus Mallon this evening. I told him about my background, my identity and told him his words were the only words that had made me+mine feel welcome+included. His inscription!
Reminder that children born in Belfast are born into a state created through partition to ensure a Protestant Unionist majority, which saw decades of violence, and the landmark Good Friday Agreement which secured peace provides the right self-identify as British, Irish, or both.
My day has been made by knowing the white supremicist rally in Washington DC, scheduled to last two hours, wrapped up after barely half an hour as all 25 of thon eejit crowd were outnumbered by thousands of counter demonstrators, who carried signs bearing Heather Heyer's name.
An exciting discovery today: I bought this secondhand copy of “Ulster at the Crossroads”, a collection of speeches and writings by Terence O’Neill, published shortly after his resignation as Prime Minister of NI.
I opened the front cover to discover it had been signed!
If ye do not understand an expression of another’s faith at a time of loss and grief, if ye do not like said expression of faith, if ye are not a believer of any faith or religion - remember it is not about ye, remember the loved ones grieving who take solace from their faith.
Today, I passed my Final Assessment within the TJI, and so can officially call myself a final year PhD researcher!
Delighted with and grateful for the constructive feedback and discussion with the panel, and v appreciative of my amazing supervisors for their support. ✨
I don't have a vote today.
The 8th is an issue of sensitivity, of pain, of anguish.
I don't have a vote today.
The Constitution can't show empathy in tragic cases, understand individual circumstances.
But we can.
I don't have a vote today. But if I did, it would be

Repeated misspellings of your name via email, when your name is displayed clearly in the email address the sender is replying to should be considered a declaration of war tbh
Solidarity and strength with the families of the victims and survivors of Kingsmill today, on the 44th anniversary of the attack.
May the ongoing inquest continue in its progress, and finally deliver the truth and justice these families deserve.

My mother has taken the doctor's orders regarding me putting on weight to great heart: daily have I been presented with various types of fresh bread, pastries, chocolates, cereal bars, milkshakes... Never should an Irish mother be given this instruction.
I find it worrying that only British passport holders are permitted to apply for new Border Force jobs being established in NI in preparation for Brexit. Why not also Irish passport holders? Both nationalities+citizenships reside in NI+are recognised in NI-allowed so by the GFA.
So the

team arrive in Japan on the same day as my RWC jersey arrives... a coincidence, or a sign of a great campaign for the fellas in green? 👀🇮🇪

Remembering one of my political heroes today: John Fee, a SDLP Councillor for Crossmaglen and MLA for Newry and Armagh, who was always forthright in his views, and a staunch advocate for peace.
He died ten years ago, 10 November 2007. He was just 43.
Today, I respect the SDLP leadership, and respect the decision of conference.
But today, with a heavy heart yet w/the courage of my convictions+belief in the principles and values of social democracy+labour, I spoke against the proposal of a formal partnership with Fianna Fáil.
Hi friends, today I climbed the staircase to get to my bedroom for the first time since I was discharged from hospital. I then walked back down.
I promptly fell asleep for two hours afterwards.
If I'm lucky, I can use the stairs and only sleep for an hour by next week!
You could hear Stella Creasy's voice crack slightly as she called out, "ayes to the right, 207".
207 MPs voted to make UK Gov realise human rights violations are occurring in NI, and onus is on the gov to rectify such violations.
207. I'll not forget that number in a hurry.
7 blood tests, 4 days in hospital, three morphine trips, three scans, an ambulance ride+many IV drips later - I've been discharged! Away home to recover with strict orders to eat, sleep, and take antibiotics. Shattered, sore, but home. GRMA Mater and RVH (but not this cannula) x
Hence, NICRA's demands were:
•One Man, One Vote
•End gerrymandering
•End discrimination in the allocation of government jobs
•Fair allocation of local council houses
•End the Special Powers Act
•Disband the B Specials
•Formal complaints procedure against local authorities
Preppin for protest: we are getting ready for today’s

The continuing refusal to legalise marriage equality and the ongoing denial of marriage rights for LGBTQ citizens in the North must end.

Keeping faith with the vision of John Hume, and with the vision of our international colleagues. 🌹
We're excited to reveal our new logo!
The red rose has been symbol of social democratic, socialist and labour politics for over 100 years and that is the kind of society we want to deliver for people here.
Fighting for a social democratic future ✊🌹

Things that need to be highlighted and discussed urgently in North Belfast this GE: lack of social housing and affordable housing, high rates of mental ill-health and lack of support services to meet demand, heartbreaking rates of suicide, levels of socio-economic deprivation
