It was a huge pleasure to contribute to the monitoring of great skua, northern gannet and common guillemot colonies in Shetland during the summer of 2023. It is really worrysome to see the grim consequences of the HPAI outbreak in 2021-2022...
📣1/7 New RSPB seabird science paper confirms substantial declines in the UK populations of Great Skua, Northern Gannet, Sandwich Tern and Common Tern following the outbreak of high pathogenicity avian influenza (HPAI) in 2021–2022. Paper:

That's the end of a fantastic field season in Mousa working with European storm petrels and learning about their breeding behaviour and reproductive success. What an outstanding seabird! Really grateful to @RSPBScience and @bennett_sophie for the opportunity!

For the second part of the field season I had the chance to contribute to different seabird surveys to understand the impact of last year's HPAI outbreak on a few skua, gannet and guillemot colonies in Shetland. Amazing work led by @JoNiMong and @BeccaMayx1. Real privilege!

Not my brightest moment, crouching over my weather writer with my midge-net 😂 but happy to contribute to this project @RSPBScience
Fieldwork is in full swing! Here's our #RSPBScience #seabirds team setting up AudioMoths on Mousa, Shetland to investigate using bioacoustics to monitor Storm Petrel populations Find out more about our previous Storm Petrel work here #Ornithology

After two weeks in Mousa, working on @bennett_sophie's storm petrel bioacoustics monitoring project, the first part of the field season is over! Playback transects completed, nests located and spectacular to see the stormies return to the broch. Looking forward to the next round!
