So far the league has been around 20 referees short each week, this weekend its nearer 30! Yet we are still receiving reports of lack of respect for referees. It has to stop or the situation will get worse. Please ensure you treat the referee as you would wish to be treated.

Good luck to all the teams starting their season today. There is a shortage of referees in Sussex this season so if you are one of the lucky ones to have an appointed referee please look after them and make sure they look forward to returning to referee your club in the future.

Following the announcement yesterday that grass roots football can restart on 29th March the league management committee are looking at options for how the season can restart. This will be discussed at a meeting with the COVID Working Group on Thursday 25th February.

Following a meeting of the MSFL Board Members today I can confirm we are hoping for a restart of matches in March, if not earlier. This would allow for league matches to be completed. We will be meeting with the COVID Working Group shortly to discuss options for a restart.

The 2022/23 season will commence on Saturday 13th August for the Premier and Championship divisions. All other divisions will start on Saturday 3rd September.

MSFL Chairman Duncan Brooker along with Michael Stratford recently visited Cuckfield Town F.C. to present them with a certificate commemorating their 150th anniversary. The club was a founding member of the league 122 years ago, a magnificent achievement.

Following the latest news it is evident that the MSFL will not be in a position to restart fixtures for some weeks. The league officers will be meeting with the COVID working group to monitor the situation with a view to restarting the season at the earliest "safe" opportunity.

Burgess Hill Rhinos won the Stubbins Cup with a 1-0 win against Buxted. The winning goal was scored by "Man of the Match" Jack Lee from a 2nd half strike into the top corner of the Buxted goal. It was an entertaining match, played in an excellent spirt in from of a crowd of 160+.

Lawrie Parsons was recently awarded with a certificate to commemorate his many years of service to the Mid Sussex Football League. Lawrie has undertaken many official roles within the league culminating with the role of President, from which he retired at the last AGM.

The FA has provided an update for ‘non-elite’ football during the new national COVID-19 restrictions that will be in place from Thursday 5 November 2020 until Wednesday 2 December 2020. This confirms there will be no football within the MSFL during this period.

Around the Grounds - Newick FC
On Saturday I attended the King George V Playing Field and watched Newick v Eastbourne Rangers II in Division Two South. After a scoreless first half the visitors ended up with a 3-1 win. Many thanks to Karl Luckhurst on the clubs hospitality.

Congratulations to Balcombe on winning the Senior Charity Cup in a thrilling match at Newhaven on Monday. Two late goals from Hollington Utd took the match to extra time where Balcombe went ahead 3-2. A last minute equaliser took the match to penalties which Balcombe won 4-3.

I was made most welcome this afternoon and was treated by a feast-full of goals as Ringmer III beat Horsted Keynes 4-3 and the First team lost 4-5 in Montgomery Cup v Holland Sports

Crawley United were winners of the Edgar German Cup after a seven goal thriller at Three Bridges on Wednesday. Behind 1-2 to Reigate Priory II at half time the second half saw a comeback to win 4-3, the winning goal coming with less than 10 minutes left on the clock.

The final of the Veterans Trophy competition took place at South Park FC on Sunday with Dorking Wanderers Vets winning the trophy following a 5-0 victory against South Park (Reigate) Vets. With Dorking 2-0 up at the break a further 3 goals were added in the last 15 minutes.
