Ike’s support of the Civil Rights Movement continued and grew in the 1960s, after he left office.  He supported Kennedy’s civil rights initiative and endorsed the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  He campaigned for African-American candidates throughout the decade.

Lincoln and Grant adopted one another’s political and military views, respectively, forming a coherent philosophy that was pro business, pro civil rights, and utilized overwhelming force against threats. Ike absorbed this philosophy and updated it for the 20th century.

Ike saw war as tragic, not heroic.  No general of WWII cared more about the lives of his soldiers. He wanted to spare them and prioritized their lives higher than any objective besides ultimate victory.
