Hearing about a Latina who has a 3.5 GPA (having to work 20 hours a week) at an Ivy League school and is being actively discourage from applying to medical school by advisors is exactly the reason why this system is biased, inequitable and needs to be reconstructed. That’s coming

I was told in high school that I was bad at English. I was told in college that a letter could not be written for me for recommendation for medical school. I was told in residency that I was not a good writer. I was told in fellowship that I am not knowledgeable about the field

The ability to speak Spanish should be a REQUIREMENT for entering medical school in communities where 1/4 of patients of the population are Latino. That means that every medical school in some states like California would require medical students to know the language before

Residency program directors: it is NOT enough to recruit the few underrepresented candidate to your program. It’s about asking WHY are there so few candidates? Rather than thinking we have enough applicants, ask HOW can we improve the pipeline and inspire college students, etc.

Had I taken my premed lower division classes at @UCBerkeley instead of community college.. I would NOT have made it to medical school.. another Latino student weeded out. Now I’m a specialized surgeon taking care of children. Why are we letting professors weed out talent?

Every job I’ve had from laboratory, med school, residency/fellowship and even my current job. I am working late enough to meet/know the evening janitor who is Latino/a. Every time we talk in Spanish and talk about family. They are proud of me and I am very proud of them.

I was rejected at Stanford for med school. A mentor told me to appeal, given the research I was doing, they obviously didn’t get the full story the first time.. I appealed/interviewed and accepted. You can ask around.. I excelled at Stanford. You lose nothing by asking.

If u got rejected to ur dream program, write them a half page email explaining why ur values match theirs. Ask for reconsideration. If I was u, I'd DM the apd, pd, pc, residents, staff, anybody connected to the givers of interviews. Nothing to lose. Everything to gain.

Research has no correlation to how you will treat people. Your life experience is how you will treat others. Research opportunities are based on unequal institutional resources. Residencies are misguided if this is how they chose the next generation. #MedTwitter

6% of physicians in the U.S are Latino/a. Some areas more, some less. The typical Latino adult/child patient/family will NEVER meet a Latino/a physician that looks like them to better understand language/culture/values. We must see and value this disparity and act with URGENCY.

Huge disconnect in Surgery Departments posting on social media showcasing diverse leadership at conferences vs actual diversity in their surgeon staff and residents. Diversity is more than a few in leadership. Simply it is having your staff/trainees represent the population.

Premeds, when u present what you’ve done. Don’t use hours. It’s more what you did over time. Tell a story of leadership. I.e: I did 80hrs of mentoring kids. Better: I spent every Fri for 6mos mentoring underserved students. Initially I mentored but then helped run the program.
