Residency program directors: it is NOT enough to recruit the few underrepresented candidate to your program. It’s about asking WHY are there so few candidates? Rather than thinking we have enough applicants, ask HOW can we improve the pipeline and inspire college students, etc.

I was rejected at Stanford for med school. A mentor told me to appeal, given the research I was doing, they obviously didn’t get the full story the first time.. I appealed/interviewed and accepted. You can ask around.. I excelled at Stanford. You lose nothing by asking.
If u got rejected to ur dream program, write them a half page email explaining why ur values match theirs. Ask for reconsideration.
If I was u, I'd DM the apd, pd, pc, residents, staff, anybody connected to the givers of interviews.
Nothing to lose. Everything to gain.

When I was in high school the college counselor pointed me towards the brochures for community college. She didn’t even walk me over.. she literally waved her hand. Many students, particularly Latino students, are told that they are not smart enough. WE ARE SMART ENOUGH!!!!!

Premeds, when u present what you’ve done. Don’t use hours. It’s more what you did over time. Tell a story of leadership.
I.e: I did 80hrs of mentoring kids.
Better: I spent every Fri for 6mos mentoring underserved students. Initially I mentored but then helped run the program.
