This one political cartoon captures the entire reconstruction period for American Freedmen. An immigrant (irishmen) with a 5 points hat and a club labeled "A vote", with a confederate southerner holding a knife with the words "The Lost Cause" inscribed, and a business man representing capitalist holding a wallet. All 3 white men, the immigrant, confederate, and capitalist are standing on the back of a Freedmen holding the American Flag. As the white men hold hands, a colored orphan asylum and a southern school burns in the background. In addition, the southerner also has a "CSA" belt buck which stands for Confederate States of America and a whip and a rope at his waist. Then there is the business man (capitalist) with a wallet labeled "cash for votes". What's worse is that this is a political cartoon was a representation of Democratic party platform in 1868. It is labeled "This is a white man's government" "We regard the Reconstruction Acts (so called) of Congress as usurpations, and unconstitutional, revolutionary, and void" - Democratic Platform by Thomas Nast. An immigrant, confederate, and a capitalist.... the irony is that this same group and their descendants are standing on our back today.
