My wife and I at the UVA protests against massive department closures and moving most curriculum online. This was the first day of our honeymoon. And those signs were double-sided, were photographed by the press, and are now in the UVA archives!

So, Deneen is trying to change the subject because he cannot defend what he did by recommending three thinkers whose critiques of liberalism relied on commitments that the Church rightly condemns. Does he think I won't notice? Or that you won't?

So @avemariauniv has released some short courses by the faculty, including one by me on Ven. +Fulton J. Sheen on politics, economics, and culture. I forgot to tip the production team, so they used the least flattering picture of me. Or else that’s just what I look like now.

If you're teaching an American Political Thought course, you should consider adding Rev. Absalom Jones. I usually use his 1808 Thanksgiving Day sermon on the end of the trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. There is a LOT going on.

Vance is the establishment. He is the GOP VP nominee. Trump picked him. Trump’s family runs the RNC. He could not be more establishment. That’s why he pivoted on abortion, too. He now holds the moderately pro-choice position that the establishment always had.

Catholic Integralism is a tradition of thought that, rejecting the liberal separation of politics from concern with the end of human life, holds that political rule must order man to his final goal. Since, however, man has both a temporal and an eternal end, integralism holds tha

I explain to my students every semester that our nation is run by 20-30 year old staffers and clerk from about ten or twelve colleges. They don’t believe me, and then when some of them move DC, I get that same message—“You were right.”

Our legislators are finally getting so old that people might actually start to ask who is actually running the country. (The answer is that it's a bunch of 30-year-old Hill staffers who work for the legislators.)

I really liked Kevin's article, which should surprise no one. A few things I'd like to mention. Neo-integralism no longer is the subject of essays because, well, we know what it is and its advocates have moved into another stage of promoting it, namely seizing institutions.

As a postscript to the most recent academic fracas, I wanted to mention that the shift from “scholar” to “academic” during the end of the 20th century was a disaster. Not a big Heidegger fan, but he was right about this:

I think APSA would have survived if it hadn’t focused so much on political theory and historical methods and instead pushed for more quantitative work, especially in fields where one uses proxy measures that conform to one’s unexamined biases.
