Working in journalism is stressful (esp. now), doesn't pay great & people hate you. But a lot of news people refuse to quit because the call to serve their community is so strong. You care about that more than you care about yourself. And those people are admirable to me.

Hi, just updating folks on what’s been happening with me. In short, it’s been awful. Lots of panic attacks on the daily, had to cancel my trip home, and am now on meds. Thankful to have a great support system and the resources to manage all this. I’ll be back soon.

A personal update: come March, I’ll be leaving Colorado and moving back home to the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas. I wasn’t planning on leaving CPR after just four years, but I miss my family, and would like to buy a house. Many emotions, of course.

Since we moved to Denver just over two years ago, we’ve had this great neighbor. He’s been a great man to us. Food exchanges, rides, lots of good stuff. He’s an older man, in his late 70s. All our rents have risen by hundreds of $$ and he can’t afford it, so he’s moving out ☹️

Okay, I’ll be back at work on Tuesday for my first official shift as Midday Host for CPR. Coping with anxiety & trauma is not linear, but I’m on the right path. Endlessly thankful to my family, friends, coworkers and beyond who’ve been so supportive. I feel so loved 🥺

It's taken a lot of work, but over the last weeks I've become much better at managing my anxiety, and I feel so much lighter in my mind and body. Told my therapist I've started anticipating triggers to "get ahead of my stress" and he said he's stealing that phrase. Am proud!

It's been some time since I've said anything about how I'm doing with my panic attacks & anxiety. That's because things have been going really well, and it's easy for me to take that for granted. But being happy and feeling nearly normal is a BIG deal. So yes, things are good.

News managers need to read this thread. Like any other job, it’s the employer’s responsibility to ensure their workers are healthy & supported. It takes more than saying “we’ve got counselors.” Support comes in many, many forms. It starts with listening and *actually* caring.
This breaks my heart. We in news organizations need to do more to support our young people, especially in these difficult times.
