Though I fear they might not be as rich as you think - slave-owning areas, in the USA or the British Empire, were generally less developed. And Brazil, where by far the most slaves were taken, is even poorer.

@istreasatuatha It was a "concession" which was necessary to free the slaves, under that agreement. Without such an agreement, either it would have been far more complicated, and maybe bloody to have freed the slaves - or they wouldn't have been freed...

@hexane360 @istreasatuatha I am defending the practice of freeing slaves. Which would most likely involve some form of reimbursement to law-abiding citizens - unless you wished to see a civil war, American-style. Perhaps you'd have wanted to see a bloody conflict inside Britain instead?

And many thousands of British sailors lost their lives enforcing the slavery ban. So why are you expecting UK taxpayers to cough up more?
