Terence Crawford (35) and Errol Spence (32) are exactly a decade older than Sugar Ray Leonard (25) and Thomas Hearns (22) were when they fought for the first time in 1981.
Big Turki has declared that he wants to lower Boxing PPV prices to $20 worldwide & said the Artur Beterbiev vs Dmitry Bivol PPV will be $15 worldwide on Oct 12th. People watch illegally because the price is high. If I give good fights with a good price I will increase the fanbase
I’ve seen Mike Tyson display extreme patience and self-control. This is not the hotheaded 20-something. Strangers grabbing at him, being rude, dismissing requests to leave him alone. This plane incident says so much more about society than it does Tyson who - surprise! - is human
In the 40plus years that I’ve been watching boxing, I’ve never seen a marquee fighter not only avoid his sternest challenges for two calendar years - but fight four guys that no one wanted to see. This is a clinic in the low risk/high reward strategy.
41 years ago Aug 12: Salvador Sanchez, 23, WBC featherweight champion, dies tragically in early-morning car crash in native Mexico. He was in training for a 9/15 rematch with Juan LaPorte & in talks to fight Alexis Arguello. He is arguably the greatest Mexican boxer in history.
Bad career moves: Meldrick Taylor moving up to 154 to challenge Terry Norris, Kell Brook moving up to 160 to challenge Gennadiy Golovkin, Mikey Garcia moving up to 147 to challenge Errol Spence. All career killers.
It’s hard to believe we’re talking about 6-foot-3, 221-pound Oleksandr Usyk being the “small” heavyweight. Prime Ali & Holmes were 6-3, 212. Foreman was 6-3, 217/257. Tyson 5-10, 218. How would they do vs 6-9, 277 Fury? Even 6-5, 250 Lewis would be undersized vs Fury.
People spent so much time complaining about Wilder during his prime, they didn’t take the time to appreciate him. He was a pure puncher who came to knock the other guy’s block off. He had flaws. So what?! That’s what made him exciting! One of the most fun heavyweights ever imo.
I applaud Canelo for picking Saunders, an undefeated opponent and a world champion with a tricky style. Those of you complaining that it’ll be a boring fight, I don’t know what to say. Go watch replays of Gatti-Ward on YouTube I guess.
Sources: Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders have agreed to terms for a super middleweight title fight May 2 at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena. DAZN will stream the fight live worldwide, including in U.K. Press conference expected next week. Details:

Folks upset at Paul bros should be upset at boxing. Their emergence is result of sport’s failure to deliver big fights. Also sanction body shenanigans & chaos being common denominator over decades. This is proof boxing is popular. But public is now dictating what it wants to see.
I used to think Kenny Bayless was best ref in the game. Tonight showed me he is not anymore. Even worse, it seemed he was purposely counting slowly and biding time when Ramirez was dropped. I hope I’m wrong. But I know what I saw.
This is on point. I’ve never seen a wronged fighter get hated on so much. In his prime, GGG was so fearsome that most everyone avoided him. Including you-know-who. His fights became more competitive as he aged. But I still think he’s 42-0 & among the greatest middles in history.
To the
@GGGBoxing
haters on my timeline: GGG was 345–5 as an amateur (Olympic silver). As a pro, he's 40-1-1, 35 KOs (arguably 42-0), had record-setting 160 title reign, is one of greatest punchers in history & never been dropped or visibly hurt. He'd compete with any 160 ever.
Have refs gotten so bad that they’ve lost their mission? What is this guy doing chasing the winner all over the ring while a fighter lies unconscious on the canvas? And for what reason? To keep him from celebrating? One of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen.
@LeeGormley
This wait is so bad. It’s bad for the fighters, it’s bad for the onsite fans, it’s bad for the viewers and it’s bad for the sport. What a ridiculous, short-sighted decision.

OMG! OMG! I cannot believe this S$&@$! Anthony Joshua — holder of 3 belts, gets TKO’d by Butter Bean.......I mean some dude named Andy Ruiz JR. What a damn disgrace. Joshua looked completely gassed! More fatigued than hurt! Now how in the Hell did you let that happen? How?
2 yrs ago Mar 13: Marvelous Marvin Hagler passes away at age 66. A native of Brockton, MA, Hagler is regarded as one of the greatest middleweights ever, making 12 title defenses from 1980-87, including legendary 1985 KO of Thomas Hearns. Final record: 62-3-2 (52 KOs). RIP MMH.

This Jake Paul rematch with yet another non-boxer is the top headline story on
@espn
. On a day where there were bowl, NFL & NBA games & - oh yeah - actual boxing between pro boxers that’s not even mentioned on its “boxing” page.
I’ve never seen a fighter so hurt recover so completely. By the next round, Mayweather was firmly back in control. And what an expert illustration of a fighter keeping his head, smothering punches & dousing the fire.
This is eye-opening. From press row, 15 had it a draw, 2 had it for Canelo and a whopping 34 scored it for GGG. It won’t happen, but a third fight needs to get out of Vegas. Go to LA, Dallas or NY. Nevada commish, economy has too much riding on a Canelo win.
Very good performance by Canelo. But also very predictable. Plant didn’t have the seasoning, resume or punch to make a serious run. Canelo needs to fight a puncher next. Whether it’s GGG, Benavidez or Beterbiev. Someone with power. He hasn’t been threatened by power all year.
Had Duran never fought again, he’d be regarded as one of the top 2 fighters that ever lived - right after Robinson. He was 72-1, a 2 division champ & coming off one of the great performances ever. & he was a huge star, especially with Latinos in the US. No mas was devastating.

The damage Kell Brook sustained against GGG almost ended his career. Terry Norris effectively ended Meldrick Taylor’s career. This is why Mikey Garcia’s possible challenge of Errol Spence is a bad idea. Bigger fighters often do serious, career-threatening damage to smaller ones.

I’d rank
@Tyson_Fury
’s performance last night as one of the great big-fight performances I’ve ever seen: Sanchez over Gomez, Chavez over Rosario, Mayweather over Corrales, Hearns over Cuevas, Curry over McCrory. Utter unexpected dominance & signature, legacy-establishing.
Berchelt-Valdez, Estrada-Chocolatito 2, Ortiz-Hooker, Ruiz-Arreola card, Canelo-Saunders and last night’s Figueroa-Nery card have all been outstanding offerings in 2021. Next week Ramirez-Taylor. These promoters brought their A game post-pandemic. Good for boxing.
@TheSquaredCirc3
Why is your left guard so low against a big right-handed puncher? After yesterday I question every strategic thing about the guy. He must’ve gotten this far on ability alone. Because that’s just basic common sense.
I hate PPV. But complaining about it after you’ve purchased it as though you were wronged somehow is crazy. It’s boxing. Sport that saw Duran quit, Tyson bite off an ear and McCall suffer a nervous breakdown. There’s a reason it’s called “theater of the unexpected.”

Happy 65th Birthday to the youngest world champion in boxing history, Wilfred Benitez, who won the WBA 140lb title at age 17 - a feat that may never be duplicated.
I have Angulo beating Berlanga 96-94. I don’t think he’ll get the decision. But Berlanga was completely underwhelming. Not ready for prime time. Or even close.
My definition of greatness held up last night and holds up with the Fab 4 of Bud, Monster, Usyk & Bam: Great fighters save their best performances for their most demanding opponents & when the stakes are highest.
Logan Paul started summer vs Floyd. Jake Paul ends summer vs Woodley. With all the postponements & cancelations, you’d have to say, to the chagrin of boxing purists everywhere, that the Pauls have been among the biggest players in the sport this year. Am I really writing that?

fracas is what can happen when you get the fighters/fans all lathered up with preflight histrionics. You want to build personal animosity, then want to switch it off at your convenience. Doesn’t work that way. Playing with fire.
This is what a teenager obsessed with boxing would do in 1988: type his own ratings, monthly wrap and fight schedule on a manual typewriter. My grades indicated that I preferred doing this to studying.
This photo represents boxing in previous eras. Fighters who didn’t wait for greatness to be bestowed upon them via strategic matchmaking - but who aggressively, fearlessly pursued it.
Manny Robles did a great job with Ruiz and got a raw deal from a fighter who only had himself to blame. He has every right to be angry and bitter. Instead, he wishes Ruiz and Reynoso nothing but the best. That, ladies and gents, is class.
More people will know Teofimo Lopez tomorrow than know 90% of the fighters in the sport. That’s the power of ESPN and network TV. I had friends who never watch boxing asking me when the fight started, who I thought won, etc. He’s already a star. Visibility is everything.
Oscar sought out the best competition over 6 divisions, came to knock your block off and carried the sport on his shoulders for more than a decade. Covering the Charpentier fight in El Paso one of the joys of my writing career. An old school warrior & a true Mexican-American hero

If Lennox Lewis vs Vitali Klitschko wasn’t on PPV, then Deontay Wilder vs Tyson Fury shouldn’t be either. With the lack of a sufficient undercard, $75 is a bit of an outrage.
Remember these names folks. Mike Contreras and Jeff Sinnett. They’re not real judges. They’re imposters. A pitiful verdict. These jerks are killing boxing.

Never understood the concept of paying corrupt sanctioning bodies a fee for what? The right to wear a belt? Tear boxing’s power structure down and start all over, because this is absurd.

I just watched this and it pops up on my feed. I’d forgotten what a great fight this was. Older and slower but these guys traded serious leather for 12 rds. So lucky to be alive in this era. No jabbering on social media. Just real warriors wanting to knock each other’s block off.
