🧵21 things I wish someone would’ve told me as a new Assistant Professor: 1. It’ll take forever to get started and your lab setup. Take however long you’re hoping and double it. Maybe triple it. 2. Seek out new mentors and collaborators. They don’t need to be in your department.

Someone asked me my strategy for reviewing papers from home after a long day in the lab. This is just what works for me. -Print the PDF -Bring it home -Play with my kids -Don’t read the paper. Fall asleep -Spill coffee on it in the morning -Bring it back to the lab the next day

It’s job season for many. I don’t know who needs to hear this, but... When a student gets a job there needs to be a huge celebration. An “Awesome, congrats” is not good enough. 👎🏼 Friends, food, drinks, music, and bad dancing must be involved. 🕺🏼💃🏽👏🏼🍾🎤 🎈 @AcademicChatter

Students learning about research need to understand that success/failure is largely out of their control. We have no control over a journal’s acceptance rate, how a reviewer perceives our best work, an advisor’s mood, etc. Celebrate the submission, not the acceptance!

Something that was said to me as a grad student that I’m often reminded: Nobody talks about grants and publications at funerals. It might be mentioned that you did research. But your colleagues will be there talking about the times you helped, gave guidance, and shared laughs.

I’ll say it. Charging students money to submit a conference abstract and then rejecting it is criminal. Conferences are professional development and networking opportunities for students. The abstract shouldn’t have to be perfect. Let the mentor take responsibility for the work.

Universities and programs that support scholarships, travel, etc for students should also include recent grads (+1 yr IMO). For most, it takes a while to get a career going. It is silly to not allow support for a summer initiative for a student that graduates in May, for example.

For many students, Thanksgiving break is too short to justify $ to go home. Thus, while it’s a time to recharge the batteries, it can be lonely and a reminder of being away from family. PIs: Check-in on students! Nothing funner than a lab Thanksgiving. #phdchat #AcademicTwitter

Excited to share our new review “The Application of Creatine Supplementation in Medical Rehabilitation.” Great team effort led by @kyliekharmon ! A must read for clinicians and patients unfamiliar with the creatine literature. 💪
