Nesil once again bang on that leasehold reforms will have a huge positive impact for the people of Barking. The work of the parliamentary Labour Party on leasehold reform and abolition is vital to end the systematic overcharging of leaseholders by freeholders @lbbdcouncil Over Ā£1bn has been spent by the local authority on building homes with predatory lease agreements, forcing āhome ownersā to use expensive district heat networks, incompetent managing agents and service providers all while leaving them with garbage that couldnāt be collected.
Leasehold reform is long overdue. Many aspiring homeowners face enough hurdles getting on the property ladder, only to find greater obstacles as leaseholders, making ownership a constant struggle. With 36% of Londonās homes under leasehold, the new Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act and Right to Manage will change lives in #Barking and Dagenham. #BarkingandDagenham #Leasehold

Harry has an unwavering commitment to tackling the injustice of the leasehold tenure. He was the first to show an interest & offer help to us with everything we face with @lbbdcouncil - which wonāt be forgotten. A truly brilliant campaigner.
So proud of @HarryScoffin An honour to work with him. Leaseholders everywhere should be grateful for the enactment of right to manage and raising of the qualifying threshold. Wouldnāt have happened but for his non stop campaigning when others were silent. šš»š

Once delivered, leasehold abolition and genuine home ownership will stand alongside the other huge steps in social justice delivered by the @UKLabour. Rights such as the national minimum wage, the civil partnership act, the disability discrimination act, maternity pay and much more. Leasehold abolition will rank up there with the best of them, delivering social justice to 5.9m leaseholders in š“ó §ó ¢ó „ó ®ó §ó æ and š“ó §ó ¢ó ·ó ¬ó ³ó æ

This man and the conservative government cut real terms budgets at your local authority by 50% since 2010. He wonāt mention this, but thatās that main reason.
Parts of Britain look like a complete tip right now. It didnāt use to be like this. It doesnāt have to be like this. Hereās whatās happening and how we stop trashing our country with litterš

@wharfgirl Grenfell must never be forgotten. Those responsible for the atrocity canāt be allowed to escape jail time.

Even paper straws last longer than you did in number 10.
I tried to stop the ludicrous British government plastic straw ban back in 2018. These lefty policies resulted in the Conservatives getting trounced in 2024. Good for @realDonaldTrump for standing up for common sense.

@gamecounsel @eastender99 I hope you donāt think I suggest that Farage & Reform are the answer, couldnāt be further from my view.

Nesil is spot on here. Anytime landlords are faced with legislation that introduces an expectation they treat renters with a bit of respect, they claim they will exit the market. I have seen first hand how bad the rental market is in Barking and many landlords simply want to cram as many tenants in, at the highest price possible, while doing as little basic maintenance to the property as they can possibly get away with. I have seen countless private rental properties in Nesilās constituency that are riddled with damp & mould - she is absolutely right to stand up for renters rights. š
I was on @BBCLondonNews discussing the governmentās Renters' Rights Bill. @UKLabour is on the side of the 1 in 4 families in #Barking that are renting privately, while the Conservatives and Reform voted against renters' rights. #PRS #Renting #London #PoliticsLondon

Personally, I would investigate whether shared ownership should be continued. As someone that did shared ownership, I am not convinced there is a place for it in a functioning housing market. I am sure there will be legal vehicles capable of replacing leasehold in SO, to be honest. As for leasehold houses, I would personally retrospectively convert them to freehold, with any landlords unwilling to convert the tenure facing 100% windfall taxes on ground rent that totals more than Ā£250 annually.
