NJ Senate President Steve Sweeney is narrowly trailing right now to an opponent whose entire slate spent reported spending $153 as of 11 days before the election.
Wow it's beginning to look like apocalyptic and conspiracy theory-laden political rhetoric that paints opposition as "enemies" could spur some unhinged people to commit violent acts.
Trump commuted Menendez co-defendant Salomon Melgen's 17-year prison sentence for Medicare fraud. When a prank caller impersonating Menendez reached Trump, Trump told him "we're proud of you" and congratulated him on beating his previous indictment.
Sen. Bob Menendez is on trial. Democrats lost the county line. And now George Norcross and crew are indicted. The most momentous year for NJ politics since I started covering it in 2007.
"Our position in Edison Township is that they’re not welcomed here. They’re not. They’re illegal and they belong on the other side of the boarder... We don’t want them in Edison, period. That’s the bottom line.” — Edison Mayor Sam Joshi (D).
Menendez apparently plans to run for reelection w/o Democratic support. In the 2018 primary, an unknown, unsupported candidate got almost 40% against him, after he survived a far less-serious corruption trial. That time, he had the many advantages that came w his party's backing.
Remember when Bob Menendez threatened Hudson County officials with knowing where "all the skeletons in closets are"? Three weeks later, most of them are backing his son for reelection. Not saying it's a conspiracy. Just that those are two things that happened.
I'm sure we'll hear lots of criticism of the GOP establishment from its most right-wing activists. But they pushed the party to embrace the school culture war issues. And they flopped big time.
“I’m gonna take a pass for the time being, but it’s good to see you." —
@GovMurphy
today when I asked him if the 501c4 political group his wife chairs should disclose its donors.
Tammy Murphy last week called the amount of money in politics "disgusting." Until shortly before launching her campaign she ran a dark money group that repeatedly refused requests from myself and others to publicly disclose its donors.
If you want an idea of where NJ Dem support for Menendez stands, consider this: The day of his 2015 indictment, he had statements of support from them immediately lined up. Today, they've all so far been publicly silent.
Some personal news in the interest of transparency: I've moved far from NJ. But I'm not leaving this job. And I'll still be closer to New Jersey than, uh, some people who have no problem getting an infuriating number of scoops.
Watching an interview with
@jack4nj
where moderator says New Jerseyans are "packing up and leaving the state in droves." Census data showed pretty strong population growth. But this has now become an article of faith in some circles no matter what the data says.
Hey
@AsburyParkPress
, this is even more stupid than your "Is marijuana worse than cocaine?" online poll from a while back. And it's leading your website.
A certain
@nj1015
drive time host is whining about suppression of free speech . Meanwhile he still has the prime slot at NJ's biggest radio station and still has a Twitter account. And he blocked me
More Senators, both republicans and democrats, have forcefully denounced how John Fetterman dresses than have called for Menedez to resign for being corrupt.
This is a perfect snap shot of what is wrong with Washington and why people outside the beltway have no faith in DC.
People on this website trying to claim that there's "more to" New Jersey than the part of the Turnpike you see in the credits for The Sopranos: No one believes you.
A bill that would bar NJ from sharing drivers' information with other states so they can fine them for alleged violations caught on speed or red light cameras just passed the Senate 40-0.
DeGise called the Journal "an attack dog for the radical left" because his daughter didn't stop after an accident, didn't pay parking tickets, lives in an income-restricted apartment despite $200k in income, tried to pull political connections with a cop....
Watching all this footage again, I can't help but feel so frustrated that mainstream politicians continue to deny that what you're seeing is what happened.
Newark's population is above 300,000 for the first time since the 1980 Census. And while it grew slightly from 2000 to 2010, this is the first time its population increased substantially since the mid-20th Century white flight
Menendez kept Dem support during his last corruption ordeal. But that was a far less strong indictment than this one. Based on the questions I've been asking NJ Dems for the last year about Menendez, I definitely wouldn't bet on them sticking with him through this one.
NJ's official 2020 population is 9.29 million. That's higher than at least I expected, and an example of why we need to stop citing the United Van Lines survey. The 2019 Census estimate was 8.82 million.
Josh Gottheimer has become one of the county line's biggest defenders and played a key role in getting Middlesex County Democrats, nowhere near his district, to hire a prominent attorney to defend it. Why? It's all about running for governor in 2025.
Starting next year the NJ minimum will be $15.13. Before taxes, and if they didn't spend any of it, it would take a minimum wage earner 31,725 hours to accumulate the amount of cash found in Sen. Menendez's house.
In any other place in the country,
@AndyKimNJ
would be reported as the clear frontrunner in this race.
The only reason he isn’t is when reporters accept the power of undemocratic forces, instead of exposing and questioning them.
Tim Helck, my father-in-law, died last week. He was a sweet and brilliant man. It was Covid-related. Sudden and shocking. I can’t do him justice in a tweet. Read my wife on her dad here:
Sad news for the NJ public and press: Layoffs at News 12 NJ. I'll hold off on the names for now, but it looks like a pretty big number for such a small station.
My wife and I just celebrated the 20th anniversary of our first date, so of course we got some photos taken and made it all about the newest member of our family, Gus.
