We expressed and purified this recombinant protein in 293 cells this week. We obtained 1 mg of it. It is just crazy to think that this worth >10K$ if you will be buying the same amount from R&D!
Just got promoted to Full Research Professor at IRCM!!! Thanks to
@ircm_mtl
and
@med_umontreal
for the support over the past 10 Y. This will not have been possible without all the trainees how worked in the lab, my research associate Julie Lacombe, and more recently
@xqc9gy5mn8
.
We are still looking for at least one PhD student or one postdoctoral fellow to work on fatty liver disease and liver cancer.
@IRSC_CIHR
funded position!
This morning I was teaching a course at McGill. At the end two students told me "thank you, this was really interesting." It just made my day. 🤩
Students: when you like a lecture, say it to the prof. It matters.
Just find out that Pedro Pascal as histological stains was previously and independently described by
@DiegoMoralesN
! So I am sharing his beautiful own data here.
Hey
#PathTwitter
&
#MedTwitter
, check out Pedro Pascal transformed into Pedro Pathcal as different stains & methods in histo/cyto/pathology!

Yes. Me, my wife, my son, my mother, my sister, my father, my brother, the technician in my lab, one of my student... To name a few. None of us got COVID and we are all fully vaccinated.
🚨We are looking to recruit PhD student(s) and postdoc fellow, to work on a very interesting project on the role vitamin K-dependent proteins in beta cell and diabetes! Follow up of our recent
@CellReports
paper.
@CIHR_IRSC
funded.
@ircm_mtl
Please RT. More info in the ad 👇👇
I like to watch this graph and try to imagine what could be my research program if I will be living in early 2000' Canada. This country used to be a wonderful place for biomedical research. Why can't we do better?

CIHR success rate:
One of the big mystery of scientific publication
Conducting research: years
Getting the paper reviewed: months
Performing the requested reviews: months to a year
Reviewing the proofs: "Please return all necessary corrections within 24 hours"
Je suis très honoré de recevoir ce prix de reconnaissance en recherche du Département de Médecine de l'Université de Montréal. Merci à
@ircm_mtl
et
@med_umontreal
pour leur soutien!
Today is one of those rare "magic scientific" days. We have confirmed the identification a new vitamin K-dependent protein! This is the beginning of a multi years adventure, but this day will be remembered as THE DAY!
@maisonneuvemag
@ToulasTake
Please explain me why asking immigrants to speak and understand English is more inclusive? You paper is assuming that English is some sort of universal, unifying and pacifying langage. From the point of view of a linguistic minority (French Canadian) this is not true.
Got some good news today! And consequently there will be at least two fully funded postdoctoral and/or PhD student positions opening in our lab to study the cellular and molecular biology of MASH and HCC. More to come next week when I come back from vacations.
Happy to announce that the Ferron Lab obtained a new bridge grant from
@CIHR_ICR
to support our project on NAFLD and liver cancer! This will support the work of
@Shayesteh_Kiani
and hopefully a futur postdoc to be recruited.
L’IRCM souligne avec fierté le succès exceptionnel de ses chercheurs et chercheuses au dernier concours du programme de subventions Projet des Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada.
Thanks to Diabetes Canada
@DiabetesCanada
for this essential funding which will allow us to pursue our project on osteocalcin as a new therapeutic approach for diabetes.
@academic_exit
I work in academia (research group leader) and I do give bonus to the people in my lab (staff and trainees) based on performance. I know several colleagues who do the same.
@nictitate
We appealed and made the point that you cannot dismiss a manuscript claiming other unpublished data disproved it. The journal maintained its rejection decision.
@Caroline_Bartma
Here another one: I never use bunsen burner when transforming or picking bacteria as long as there is an antibiotic in the media. In 15 years, I never an any issue with my plasmids.
Looks like there are two good news in the 2024 Federal Budget. Increased NSERC/CIHR/SSHRC and more money for scholarships/fellowship. Not clear how much more per year this is for CIHR alone (100M$?).
An unpopular opinion: being good at the bench is not about having "good hands" or being "gifted". It is about learning the techniques, getting organized, getting focused and not being distracted during the experiments.

Yes, Montreal is a real city! And an amazing place to do a PhD or a post-doc! We are still recruiting. If you are interested in beta-cell, ER biology and metabolic diseases in general, contact me.
Undergrads students are always baffled when I show them how to balance 19 tubes in a centrifuge without using an extra tube. It does look weird when you look at the rotor, but it is balanced!

You can also increase your salary by staying in academia. Moving from postdoc to assistant professor is also usually associated with a pretty good increase in salary (and in responsibilities). Plus, you get a retirement plan, which many private companies do not offer.
I am back to post some BS (from
@trudeau
budget). Looks like our government believes there is no issue with research funding in our Canada. That they have done their job. The end of the 1st sentence is a lie. Also, not a word on the scholarship value who did not changed in 20Y.
There are ups and downs during grad school. Today is a up for one of our trainees: Big congrats to
@Shayesteh_Kiani
from our lab for being awarded a
@FRQS1
PhD scholarship! 💪
And the winner of the best question asked at today's "Ask Me Anything sessions" on CIHR Project grant, is (exact wording):
"When will the awful CCV be replaced?"
😂😂😂
Update on our preprint: we now have a graphical abstract. "Vitamin K-dependent γ-carboxylation regulates calcium flux and adaptation to metabolic stress in β-cells". More to come...
I am happy to share with you the revised version of our preprint reporting a critical role for vitamin K-dependent carboxylation in the regulation of calcium flux in beta-cells and in their capacity to adapt to metabolic stress! 1/
