@lumipuna @AndrejSpiridon4 @niles_eldredge @svalver @ignacioqevo That's really interesting! It could be of course also that there are even more still unrecognized forms of piscivorous herrings in the Baltic Sea.

@mohammedfgrrgf @crocutamatata A lot of the island was likely still rather sparsely populated at that time.

@treetreet34543 @BestCryptids Your comment did imply that you would consider that it could evolve into a new species if it would be fertile. It's well possible that it is fertile btw.

@treetreet34543 @BestCryptids It's well possible they are not sterile at all, but a single hybridization does just give rise to a new species, that's not how things work.

@jethroreading32 @BestCryptids @Cpt_J_Yossarian There are even wounds on living belugas on record which came Greenland or sleeper sharks.

@DSPetolicchio @BestCryptids No, not even plausible. There is a reason why parasites which feeds on pieces of other living animals are much, much smaller than their "hosts". If there would be giant cookiecutter sharks, they could only feed on sperm whales and large beaked whales at best.

@DSPetolicchio @BestCryptids There is also another problem: at the size of the wounds they would be highly problematic even for a very large animal. Only really giant animals would tolerate them without getting serious problems.

@DotTheKat @BestCryptids @SizzlingSnakes Sleeper sharks are also able to act as "cookie cutters", known from seals and even belugas. The bite marks on the narwhal had surely the same origin.

@RobertJacobWoo1 Sleeper sharks are also known to produce round wounds on living seals, which they probably attack when they are sleeping.

@DSPetolicchio @BestCryptids Not really. Cookie cutter sharks can only make a living because they are rather small, it wouldn't work anymore as parasite if they would be much bigger. It's rather likely the bite marks were from sleeper or Greenland sharks.

@BestCryptids @Cpt_J_Yossarian That would have been by thoughts aa well after reading the description. The can cause very similar bite marks.

@RMwritings There are always stories if alleged bigger specimens, but this doesn't make them true. One of the most popular giant specimens was a misidentified basking shark carcass.

RT @ALCESonline: Here's another very cool 'glass' squid (cranchiid), Liguriella--very rare in collections so we were really excited to see…

@chapps @RMwritings @caputmundiHeidi I looked at his feed, and it's very, very weird. He thinks that ribbon fish were even the origin of dragon stories and kept on caves to tell the future.
