At faculty, we think that we should build human-first ai systems, both for principled reasons (it’s safer and more ethical to ensure humans control the systems) and pragmatic reasons (we don’t have agi, so the best decisions will be made by people and machines working together)

@ChristianHoll12 @nickcammarata 100%! I thought it was great, and totally agree. I think the system 1 and 2 language is the first steps to bridging the gap between this and more conventional science.

@nickcammarata All this is to say, I wouldn’t necessarily throw the theory out if we were able to perfectly scan the gut and it turned out that there was little important info processing going on there

@nickcammarata I’d expect that if you’re scared, eg the amygdala excretes a hormone that clenches the gut, and that correspondence is learned by other parts of the brain and therefore becomes intimately connected to our fear response.

@emollick My current thinking is that ai era skills (at best) equate to artisan humanities; live story telling, sport, artisan goods, chef, etc. definitely not what most governments think of as ai skills

We are pleased to announce the first edition of Inference Magazine — a new publication on AI progress. In the first edition, we cover: How much economic growth we should expect from AI, how soon? Previous general-purpose technologies provided very gradual boosts to growth over decades, should we expect this time to be different? Next, ‘AGI is an engineering problem’ argues that all the necessary components for building human-level AI systems are in place, and all that remains is scaling the engineering. Finally, ‘on o1’ is a technical primer on the new reasoning paradigm. Links are in the thread below...

England has two potential megacity urban areas. Both about 20 million people. Both 200km across. We've already built the blue circle, centred on London, a very strong economy. We could built the red one if we wanted. Currently it's a very weak economy.
