The only way to describe the morning of 15th Jan - 🤯 India’s first private satellite constellation just went up. Not a test, not a demonstrator, not a pilot. An. Actual. Constellation. While the last 5 years of Indian New Space have been about demonstrating capability and experimenting, yesterday we crossed the threshold and put up actual commercial Sats with contracts behind them. A quick story, the full one requires a book (Dibs!). In November 2018, running investments at @BITSSpark, I read a line "We are in the process of building and launching the world’s first hyperspectral imaging constellation" sandwiched between 50 other edtech, saas, ecommerce, fintech start ups. Two 19 year olds from @bitspilaniindia thought it *perfectly* reasonable to put up 20 satellites. They called it Numancia Aerospace and felt that this could happen in a few years and at a very reasonable cost. (There is definitely something in those desert winds.) Maybe it was my naivety, maybe it was the twinkle in @kshitijgokul ’s eyes, maybe it was the confidence in @awaisahmedna's voice. But, it felt like something could happen. And last night, it did. From juggling graduation, dropping degrees, living in suitcases, working from a metro station, battling covid, ignoring nay sayers and countless other obstacles to an actual constellation. From the 8 year old rahul who first saw Wg Cdr Rakesh Sharma and dreamt of space, thank you for re-igniting that fire and for teaching us all to dream. Your Fanboy. Always.
