Excited and blessed to be entering
#Match2024
for
#Neurosurgery
🧠 ! From a young kid in the Dominican Republic who played doctor to wanting to take out brain tumors i’m ecstatic to be entering a truly special field. I’m looking forward to connecting with future colleagues .
Just had to come on here to say that I passed Step 1 without ever opening a lick of First Aid. So do what works best for you - you don’t have to follow what has worked for everyone else
Match Day 2024! Welcome to our incoming Neurosurgery Resident Interns! We are so excited to have Maikerly Reyes, MD from Thomas Jefferson University and Ziad Rifi, MD from UCLA join us in NYC this July! 👏🎉🧠

Today was my first day in an OR and not just any OR but the neurosurg OR!! not only did I get to see an aneurysm clipping but ALSO a translabyrinthine approach acoustic neuroma resection . Safe to say mind blown 🤯 heart snatched
A monumental milestone last week , officially becoming an MD!! Eternally grateful to my parents and sister for their support on this journey and the wonderful friends in my circle . Proud to be the first doctor in my family and to be entering an incredible field.
What a great month
@TJUHNeurosurg
! Thank you to all the residents and attendings that welcomed me into their cases I’ve grown so much this month the teaching I received was invaluable. Me holding a meningioma during a highlight case on my subI month
Grateful for having an amazing mentor who supports my vision . As a future neurosurgeon I am invested in investigating health disparities in neurosurgery and the intersection of public health and neurosurgery to improve neurosurgical care . Grateful for this opportunity !
#NASBS
Finished interview season yesterday now is time to think about my rank list . To relieve some stress I decided to make a little art piece with some of my name badges : ?
Wrapped up an incredible last month of neurosurgery subIs
@UCLANsgy
. Encountered some wonderful new role models and got to hone in on my surgical skills , even learning to suture with my non dominant hand . Made some awesome friends along the way . Grateful and blessed !!
Women In Neurosurgery happening tomorrow over zoom at 8pm! We have panelists representing nearly every stage of training from PGY1- Attendings. Zoom link in thread below

A paper I’m proud to have contributed to with
@KareemNaamaniMD
describing the trend of female neurosurgery residents over the last 7 years . The number of women entering the field continues to increase although there are strides to be made…
A golden time and fabulous month
@NYUneurosurgery
! Some highlights were putting my native Spanish to use at Bellevue, learning about Gleolan, and seeing real time intra op pathology during GBM cases. Thank you to the residents and attendings that welcomed me this month
Super pumped that our review on targeted therapy for craniopharyngiomas is finally out!! It’s my first- first author and I’m v proud of it check it out (open access 👀) here grateful for the skull base team
@TJUHNeurosurg
for all their support and help
Have been wallowing in this for a sec but super psyched to be headed to Seattle next April as an AAN recipient of the diversity scholarship . Looking forward to meeting other med students, connecting with other neurologists and nerding out on brain tings 🧠
Nobody but URMs understand the struggles of being a student while having to process the constant trauma of being shown that our lives are deemed less important
Thats a wrap for
#NASBS2023
! Did my first oral presentation and learned a ton. Ran into my awesome mentor before my presi today
@SoniaAjmera
. Thank you
@NASBSorg
for a fabulous weekend
Honored to have our project selected for a podium presentation and another project (for a unique case report and lit review) chosen for a poster presentation for the annual
@NASBSorg
meeting this upcoming February 🤠🤠
Epilepsy is the reason I became a neuro nerd , super proud that it’s the topic of my first-first author abstract . Time to get cracking on the manuscript 💫
So exciting to see more women in a lot of incoming PGY-1 neurosurgery classes this year ! Specially women of color!! I’m so inspired , congratulations to all !
My last project as med student is finally out
@WorldNeurosurg
“Health Disparities in the Neurosurgical Care of Patients with Trigeminal Neuralgia” check it out ⬇️
On my way to
#AANAM
in Seattle ! Super excited to geek out on all things neurology in the next couple of days and proud to receive my award as one of the Med Student Diversity scholarship awardees
Tonight changed my life 😭😭. Honestly idk what it is but the surgeons I’ve met have been nothing but kind . On top of that I took a patient history by myself and washed some wounds . looking forward to leaving preclinical hell
Today we had our information session for our AANS chapter. Honored to be leading the chapter with this squad. Proud of us and any program would be lucky to have them ! Truly blessed to be part of a supportive and nurturing cohort .
#neurosurgerymatch
Today is my last exam of M1 ,and I only have one rule on test day: pick a GOOD outfit bc no matter the outcome , I’m still gonna walk out of the exam looking good 💁🏽♀️
As a med student it feels like punishment to take any time off. I was greeted by my site director asking where I was yesterday even though I had an approved absence for a wedding I was attending. No communication between the school and affiliate sites = med student pays for it
Spent some good old Sunday time going over knot tying specific to neurosurgery on cadaver heads today. Grateful to have supportive classmates as we gear up for aways and apps . The future of neurosurgery is ☀️
Submitting an abstract (and eventually hopefully a manuscript) for a topic near and dear to my heart next month. Excited and scared hope it pulls through 🤞🏽
Wrapped up my last day in the OR for my surgery rotation with a challenging lung decortication. lots more learning/refining to do but feeling blessed to have learnt the art of surgery from greats. Looking forward to being back in the OR in the not too distant future.
The first two weeks of intern year have taught me to never take moments with loved ones for granted, to stay present, to aim for daily growth while taking care of fragile patients, to take any criticism as an opportunity for growth, and to bask in the joy of being in this field
Incredible opportunity to get prepared for your neurosurgery subI! I went right before starting my subis last year and felt much more confident. Highly recommend to anyone in the Philadelphia area or able to tap in virtually !

Im always gonna speak up for what I believe in especially when it comes to dismantling prejudices and racism in medicine . People won’t like me for it oh well 🤷🏽♀️ didn’t come to med school to be liked
Jefferson AANS and
@TJUHNeurosurg
will be hosting a neurosurgery sub-I boot camp for medical students in the neighboring area on May 6! Details below. Sessions will be led by recently matched MS4s and
@ariamahtabfar
Let’s talk about how hard it is to afford aways and conferences for a field you’re passionate about . These are the barriers that lead to specialized surgical fields lacking diversity . Sincerely , looking for funds
Super excited to be co-hosting this Women In Neurosurgery Panel with
@indiashelley
. We have 8 phenomenal women joining us to talk about their time in neurosurgery .
@WINSneurosurge1

residents and attendings will share insights from their careers. Open to the public, and all career stages are welcome!
I’ve had the privilege to work with a Dominican attending on fam med who also happens to be one of the most compassionate physicians I’ve encountered in 3rd year. While I’m not doing primary care I’m inspired and determined to carry that same compassion as a future doctor
My first case report is finally out! I learned so much about chordoma through this patient and in light of giving thanks I am grateful to have had the opportunity to tell their tale in neurosurgery. Multi focal Ectopic Recurrence of a C2 Chordoma
Congratulations to
@JeffersonUniv
medical student Samantha Okere, who was recognized with
@AACR
Minority Scholar in Cancer Research Award at
#AACRdisp21
! The award supports early-career, meritorious minority scientists.
I had a call with my neurology mentor today and he reminded me of things I needed to hear :
You have to be comfortable with failing, failing Is part of the journey and what matters is what happens AFTER. If you attempt to do everything on 100% that’s just on the path to burnout.
Overjoyed to welcome this group to our neurosurgery residency! The future is bright and we are privileged to have the opportunity to work with them for the next 7 years!
I love reading serious research articles and finding the special sentences that reeeally make the paper stand out (highlighted). I think this applies to al medicine though , don’t forget the rest of the forest!
love love love being in the neuro ICU . Interpreted my patient’s CT today and practiced an US subxiphoid pericardial window with my fellow . Best of all it has been amazing to see one of our sickest patients start moving and opening their eyes after a TBI
@AynRandTaughtMe
Mostly I focused on UWorld , reading all the explanations even the explanations for the incorrects. Supplemented with Pathoma and some sketchy
As a soon to be rising 4th year one of my biggest pieces of advice to M1s and M2s is to not do research that doesn’t excite you , not worth it! Research should be about topics you’re genuinely interested in
This is happening tonight !! Zoom details in the flyer . Great event last year for young womxn considering a career in neurosurgery with insight from Women in the specialty across different training levels . Not one to miss !
This International Women’s Day join the Jefferson AANS chapter for our 2nd Annual Women in Neurosurgery Panel on Zoom!

Something I’m actively working on is building up the confidence to participate and be okay with being wrong . Med students are so scared of saying the wrong thing . Rather be wrong now than in a critical moment
@IMG_step1
Mostly Uworld ! didn’t do too much BnB during dedicated did a lot more pathoma for things I needed a refresher on . Some sketchy here and there for tough micro stuff
The Women in Neurosurgery panel today was amazing. It was great to hear takes on a lot of the things I’ve been wondering about including gender discrimination and family life, thank you
@helipatel09
for leading the discussion!
#InternationalWomensDay
Super happy to share our Journal of Neuro-Oncology manuscript where we found that there was no discrepancy between telemedicine and in-person visits when evaluating the likelihood of a new patient committing to surgery with a skull base neurosurgeon:
My energy has been ~ lately but super grateful for the NSG team in the INR for being so welcoming to me this morning , gave me some inspiration and made me excited to keep learning ! T-2 weeks 😬
Really struggling with the internalized pressures of success from growing up as the oldest in an immigrant family and the first to do a lot of what I’ve done in my parents’ families . Been so hard on myself this last week .

Super happy that our new study on delayed symptomatic hyponatremia got picked up for publication. It was the first project I ever worked on in
#neurosurgery
. Check it out !
The Danscos have shipped and my surgery rotation is starting this week . I am so hypeee to learn and refine my surgery skills . Any advice for the OR appreciated
Had a really good conversation with my classmates today about race in medicine and the lack of images of brown/black patients in medical education . I was able to plug my classmates onto
@BrwnSkinMatters
thanks Dr. Kay for facilitating
@AAOX3
Med school is hard but I’m so grateful that I get to do this work because of the impact I’ll have on my future patients , but especially my patients of color .
But also wanna say this med school stuff is hard and it is kind of dehumanizing how we sit staring at a computer for hours and hours . Harder in a pandemic too .
Just did a virtual science sess with high school students on zoom . The pandemic is hitting students hard but especially URM students in public education. When we think about the pipeline to medical school this is where we have to focus on . I hope I was able to add to their day.
Hey all, I am here to say that I'm a solid 2-3 months behind on mentorship requests in my inbox. I am trying my best to cycle back through, but while I am doing so, if you have someone interested in neurosurgery, please have them do the following things:🧵
Paraneoplastic syndromes are wiiildt . In my gap year we had a couple of patients presenting with acute dementia / seizures and having delayed diagnoses bc of these nasty syndromes
Went from almost failing the first quiz of the block to really pulling it together for exams . Proud of myself will be having wine to me tonight (ps it was the hardest week of my life )
And she hasn’t even mentioned the Spirometer , in which black people and other people of color automatically have less total lung capacity than white people because race is built into it
You're Black and don't get admitted for O2 when you have Covid because the pulse oximeter reads >94% when you're really 88%. You die waiting on a kidney transplant list because the eGFR uses race, which overestimates kidney function for Black people. Racism in medicine is deadly.
What’s most astounding is the response to what is happening in DC right now vs the response to the protests from the summer . It goes to show the different standards of America .
