I did not receive Honors in my surgical clerkship. In my feedback I was told I was not “aggressive” enough – sexist language when it comes to women in surgery. I appealed the grade for several reasons and lost. I came to learn that in the last 20 years only 4 students (1/2)
have appealed a grade at my institution and all have lost their appeal. We must do better if we want to fix the blatant disparity of women in surgery (2/2)

I got my Internal Medicine evals back & an Intern took the time to write 800 deeply kind words about me. Their thoughtfulness will stick with me for years to come & is a reminder to myself as I move forward in my training that a thoughtful eval can make a world of difference.
@BenElderMD
Thank you for sharing your perspective and experience, Dr. Elder! It is encouraging to hear that grades are not always viewed as a completely objective measure in the residency application process.
@WillyRamiro92
Well, I don’t believe that medical school is any better than nursing school. It is just frustrating that women are never assumed to be doctors or pursuing an MD/DO.
@MLVision4Health
Ming, I am so sorry! I know that many of my Asian classmates have faced similar discrimination to what you have described, especially in surgical fields. I am white and therefore will never understand your lived experience, but I am deeply sorry that this has happened to you.
