We're astonished to say that we're about to hit 250 submissions for our third issue. We're humbled by this. We also want to say that if we end up hitting 500 we will most likely pause at that point to play catch up, and then reopen when that number is more manageable <3
Hello everyone! We will be reopening for submissions next week on 8/14. We have also chosen to make all submissions free! We will be operating a tip jar as well, but this is completely optional. A $40 gift card will still be given to authors whose work we publish.
We reopen for submissions tomorrow! We have made similar solicitations before but if you have a piece that you’ve had trouble finding the right home for, We’d love to read it. Something that might feel out of place in comparison to what you usually make.
If you're unsure of what kind of work to submit to Magazine1, don't be. We want and take all comers. Give us your best, give us your worst, just give us something that breathes.
I just want to give a really big thank you to everyone who followed in the last day or so (and in the previous months as well) we’re a small operation and there’s no real reason to pay attention to us so the fact that you are is heartwarming!
Hey everyone! The staff, store, and the magazine made it through hurricane Milton just fine, but we are behind as a result of losing a week to evac/return. We promise responses are coming soon for many of your pieces. Thank you for your patience!
While we don't pay, we will give every author/artist we publish a $40 gift card that can be used in person at Bookstore1 in Sarasota, or in our online store! Realized that I hadn't mentioned this on here before.
We are ten followers away from 300, if we reach it today we will reveal the excellent title of a very exciting nonfiction piece we are going to publish :)
We've gotten quite a few new followers since opening for our second issue (yay!) so we want to let everyone know that we have a five dollar submission fee and we offer payment in the form of a $40 gift card that can be used in person at Bookstore1, or in our online store.
If you’re a Florida writer living in Tampa/St. Pete/Sarasota please submit to our Florida Gulf Coast feature! We’d love to feature more local writers and artists
Cover art reveal for issue two! "The Cooler" by Tony Corbitt Jr, a local Sarasota painter. We're excited to feature this piece, as well as a few more of his oil paintings, in the upcoming issue. Out 7/17!
Issue 2 is live! Please check it out here -
Featuring the work of Billie Sainwood, (
@DriedMarigolds
) Will Mulligan, (
@dubmull23
) Ewen Glass, Paulus Kapteyn, Alani Hicks-Bartlett, and Dale Going to name only a few!
Today is the final day to submit to Magazine1! Thank you to everyone that has submitted, considered submitting and decided not to, or just followed us here. We can't express how honored we are that you've shared your time, attention, and art with us.
We really are in need of some visual art submissions. If you know anyone crafting material work in the material realm please let them know about us! Same goes for digital work in the digital realm.
We are still in need of submissions of all kinds, please send us some off-putting word ordering! Sub fee is $5 and published author's receive a $40 gift card that be used either in our online store or in person if you're in Sarasota.
After much deliberation and close reading, Magazine1 has made its final selections for its first issue. 20 pieces total. 11 poems. 5 stories. 3 essays. 1 photograph. One hundred billion thank yous to everyone who submitted to us.
@gutslutpress
Still open over here! We want everything but would love to see more visual art submissions! We want pieces you have a hard time defining, your late night flurry of sudden energy stuff.
Be sure to check out the Swamp Ape Review, it’s the lit mag run out of our EIC’s MFA alma mater <3 without the Swamp section therein, his editorial taste wouldn’t be what it is today
The Swamp Ape Review is opening for submissions on March 1st! Get your fiction, nonfiction, poetry and visual art ready—the swampy folks want to see it and read it!🌴🐊
The plan is for us to launch in January. The account has been quiet as a result of the combination of holiday season at the store and website building, but I assure you we are still here!
Due to ongoing internet issues post-Milton we have not yet been able to get into our Submittable account in a way that allows for easy reading. Thank you for your ongoing patience!
We're prepping for the storm over here, so it feels like as good a time as any to remind everyone that we are a Florida-based lit mag, and love to read work from Florida writers! If you live in the Tampa/St Pete/Sarasota area, please submit to our Gulf Coast of Florida feature.
After months of work and many excellent submissions, the first issue of Magazine1 is here - I cannot overstate how thankful I am to everyone who contributed to this issue and to the wonderful staff of Bookstore1. Without you, this wouldn't be possible.
If we're running behind on getting back to you, we're very sorry! Magazine1 is really just the EIC at the moment, and he's trying his best to make sure everyone gets a fully attentive reading. Thank you for your patience.
I look forward to reading everything that is submitted to us as well as sharing what we are able to publish. Thank you as well to anyone who sees fit to share their work with me.
To be clear, when we say “hybrid work” we mean literally the weirdest shit you have on your hard drive. We want haunted files. Try to tell us our future through digital seance. Submit something that looks like literally nothing else.

Not lit mag related but one of the pleasures of working in a bookstore is getting to sell elderly people nonfiction books with titles like "Is Math Real?" I hope they come back and tell us if it is or not
@helenaredamancy
Subs close on November 15th, and we try to get back to people within 6 weeks of their submission. We're usually a little faster than that but it provides a decent buffer just in case.
Well, it looks like we smashed through our goal of 300 followers yesterday! And as promised, we will do our first title reveal: coming to a nonfiction section near you is "Batholithic Fragments of Jaar" by J. Billings, this one is definitely a mind melter!
There is just over a week left to submit to Magazine1 issue 1. That kind of numerical parity only comes up every one in a while so scratch a weird itch in your brain by sending us writing!
Our hybrid section received zero submissions and I'm wondering what might convince people to submit there since we did receive and accept several subs that could fit there. Is it just the name "hybrid?" I don't know many people would use the term to actually describe their work.
In our first week of operation I'm really glad to say that people have been submitting. I'm honored that people are trusting us with their work. Thank you to everyone who has submitted, and I can't wait to read everything else that comes in!
The first issue of Magazine1 will officially be available to read on January 10th! Mark you calendars! Or don't! That feels a little extreme for a literary magazine! But hey, it's your calendar, do whatever!
As we prep the store/ourselves for the oncoming hurricane, let us know what ur favorite pieces of storm-based literature are! Link them here if possible, especially if you wrote them!
