After a few days at home in snowy Rochester, I am off to Japan! It’s been a long time in planning, but the time has finally come…. And I am happy to be traveling to Tokyo for a concert with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra at Suntory Hall on Saturday 1 February. The concert will be quite special as the program begins with opera and ends with songs from my new jazz recording and other favorite standards! From a "Recondita armonia" with virile elegance, the bronze voice of the American tenor seizes the audience and will not let him go, glorious and still very powerful treble of "La vita mi costasse" and " Vittoria! "To the caress of a silky and beautifully chiseled song for the lamento and an "O dolci mani" full of the consummated art of nuances or nuances. As far as we are concerned, it was in an upsetting "recitative" preceding the lamento that Gregory Kunde fascinated us the most, as if in the reminiscence of the suspended moments of the life of the convict, the singer managed to make us pass something of ours... Should we still be surprised that after a series of concerts in Japan devoted to jazz and the repertoire of the American songbook, this "UFO" of lyrical art decided to address the role of Dick Johnson in La Fanciulla del West? Thank you so much for this memorable and important opportunity to celebrate the beauty and genius of Puccini, in this anniversary production of Tosca here at the Rome Opera. I have so enjoyed working with my lovely Tosca Saioa Hernandez and the sinister Scarpia of Gevorg Hakobyan. The three of us worked hard to bring these characters to life in the most authentic way. And a big hug and salute to the wonderful Michele Mariotti for his musical leadership of this beautiful score. As the performances here come to a close today, I hope you have experienced Tosca with all its passion and drama.
