The MacArthur Memorial is a museum that pays tribute to General Douglas MacArthur and the millions of men and women who served in WWI, WWII and the Korean War.

To mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Philippines, we are posting excerpts from oral histories the MacArthur Memorial conducted w/ former civilian POWs. The first excerpt is from a 2005 interview with Liz Irvine, a Santo Tomas survivor.

During that difficult period at West Point, one of Blaik's assistant coaches was Vince Lombardi – the namesake for the Super Bowl Trophy. Lombardi was impressed by MacArthur's resolve and by his maxim: "THERE IS NO SUBTITUTE FOR VICTORY."

From the Archives: on FEB 5, 1945, Patton sent a message congratulating MacArthur on reaching Manila. On FEB 6, 1945, MacArthur replied with thanks & acknowledged Patton's "splendid success." The Battle of Manila was just beginning. The Battle of the Bulge had recently concluded.

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the start of the 1945 Battle of Manila. It is the largest and most intense urban fighting in US military history. American military casualties: 6500+. Japanese military KIA: 16000. The number of civilian casualties is a staggering 250,000+.

Happy GI Joe Day! MacArthur was made into his own limited edition GI Joe action figure in 2003 as part of the brand’s Medal of Honor Recipient series. The figure was sold with his iconic pipe and sunglasses, a five-star flag, binoculars, and maps of the Southwest Pacific.

25 years ago today, Jean Faircloth MacArthur passed away at the age of 101. The wife of General Douglas MacArthur for nearly thirty years, Jean exhibited courage, compassion, and dedication throughout her life as a military spouse, mother, and philanthropist.

MacArthur Memorial is closed today, Wednesday, JAN 22.
All City of Norfolk offices and facilities, including recreation centers, libraries and The Slover, will be closed TODAY, Wednesday, Jan. 22. This includes MacArthur Memorial, Virginia Zoo, Nauticus and Norfolk Botanical Garden as well as the Norfolk Courthouse.

The MacArthur Bowl trophy is named for General MacArthur and has been awarded each year to the top college football team since 1959. The trophy features MacArthur's famous quote: "there is no substitute for victory."
