🌟 MSOS International Student Spotlight 🌟 Meet our incredible PGY1 orthopaedic surgery resident, straight from Lima, Peru! 🇵🇪✨ 💬 Medical School: Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia 💬 Residency Program: The University of New Mexico, PGY1 💬 Hobbies: Dancing 💃, trekking 🏔���, and discovering amazing restaurants🍴 What inspired the journey to orthopaedics? "I met one of my mentors when I was 11 after a sports injury; while waiting in his office, I was immediately captivated by the ability to put bones back together and restore the ability to walk, play sports, and more. Fast forward: during my first visit to the OR, I fell in love with ortho, and I realized that is what I wanted to do for a living, so I went to medical school to pursue orthopedics. Ortho is fantastic; you get to make a difference with your hands, which is pretty unique." Words of wisdom for aspiring surgeons? "Don't stop believing. Work hard, find mentors early, and be passionate about what you want. The journey is hard but worth it.” What does diversity in orthopaedics mean? "As a Latina, foreign graduate, female in orthopedics, I am a firm believer that diversity in the healthcare system is not just about representation but about the potential it holds. Language, culture, gender, and other types of disparities are some of the main contributors to health inequity. When the team reflects the diversity of the population, we can better understand and address the unique needs of our patients, bridging the gaps between providers and patients. At the team level, the inclusion of different viewpoints from people with very distinct backgrounds is not just a diversity quota but a stimulus for innovative approaches."
