I want to thank you all for such gracious words of support for this article today. Your words have meant so much. I’m going to respond to them but I’m kinda also hiding for a sec lol b/c it’s def been vulnerable and a bit taxing. Thank you all so much❤️
@emzanotti
I guess I just don’t see the suffering of what your grandfather endured as devaluing what these college kids are doing.
I hope none of our kids go through what your grandfather did, but it doesn’t mean that the things they do try to do to better the world are worthless
Twitter, I’ve missed you! I hope you all have a blessed Holy Week and Triduum. Quick minor update on things- no big deal lol- but I met our amazing pope and he blessed me, as well as our new baby 👶❤️.
@PaulCastroTX
Paul, 15 years ago I was kidnapped and assaulted. I also have become an advocate for the imprisoned and for the mass incarceration crisis we face. I’m so deeply sorry for your loss and so edified by your example of advocacy here- even when it costs. Thank you.
The pope skipping cultural war talking points to remind us that while the world is showing a sense of unity in the Olympics, this same world is murdering each other w weapons of war and human suffering is peak Catholicism. This is my church. A voice for Christ living in people.
I keep thinking of that little girl growing up in rural Algeria, told she couldn’t box bc she was a girl, fighting all odds, all sexism, finally to make it, only to have idiotic Americans smear her globally, possibly endangering her and her family, all for some culture war points
Whew accidentally got into the side of Catholic Twitter that twists the Bible to justify anti immigration views and am so suddenly grateful my little corner of Catholic Twitter.
Yesterday at Mass, a second collection was taken to buy hygiene products for people in prison who couldn’t afford them.
Y’all. This is absolutely repulsive- that those in prison aren’t given basic necessities. It’s a violation against human dignity and inexcusable for the US.
@gehringdc
He literally received an award from NAPA for Catholic laity during a ceremony- which Bishop Barron was a speaker for- sandwiched b/n two federal executions. I believe the ceremony was on a Wed and the executions were Tues and Thurs that week. It was incredible to witness.
As Catholics, it’s worth pointing out that not only are anti-vaxx Catholics socially and morally irresponsible but they are in clear dissent from Church teaching. Rome has spoken on use of vaccines and additionally Catholic moral theology is clear on remote material cooperation.
We must be clear. Rome, allowing for the conscience, has not mandated that we take CoVId vaccines. But that if we choose not to, the obligation falls on us to take proactive steps to avoid transmission, protecting the vulnerable. Simply put: You cannot be anti-vaxx and anti-mask
The Church teaches extramarital sex is a sin. But. Y’all. With feeling: single motherhood- and any pregnancy under any condition- is never a sin. In fact, it is often a radically selfless, sacrificial yes to life that often takes more heroism than those in stable marriages.
To those dismissing me as a left cath: 1. I don’t even know what I am, I’m just trying to be a Christian. But 2., if y’all are defining me as left cath b/c I speak up for the poor, marginalized and vulnerable, you may want to think about what being a right cath means to you.
Oh my gosh thank y’all so much for the love and support! A post like this definitely needs a follow up pic. So here’s Mr. Emmanuel Christopher❤️❤️❤️. We are both doing well but getting much needed rest before we go home to crazy land with those siblings.
Update. He arrived: healthy, happy, and huge–9 lbs, 6oz. Mom is healthy and a trooper... she's just texting me like nothing happened. She is some kind of hero. Te Deum Laudamus!
Oh my gosh, yalls words of congratulations and sharing my joy abt this baby and meeting the pope! Y’all have this pregnant woman crying! Here’s the pope’s face when I told him estoy embarazada! He absolutely lit up and his authentic love for children is so clear and infectious❤️
I will never comprehend the depth of faith Black Catholics must have to constantly watch things like our most popular bishop going on Prager U and our biggest media outlet cancel Gloria Purvis and all with little to no resistance and yet still stay in this Church.
I’m begging Catholics everywhere to stop this. She wasn’t defending purity- she was fighting a rapist who murdered her.
Her purity was no where in question- rape doesn’t infringe upon one’s purity. And name this sin, it is rape.
Today we commemorate Bl. Karolina Kozka (1898-1914). She had strong faith and willingness to catechize to neighbors and children alike. She recited rosaries and was an ardent devotee to the Mother of God. She was killed by a Russian soldier as she was defending her purity.
Abby Johnson blaming a vaccinated person for her getting COVID then advertising for drugs that used the same cell lines she’s vowed to never use is, on brand.
Criminalizing abortion will work the same way criminalizing drugs has worked- the rich will still get theirs while the poor become even more enslaved in our egregious incarceration complex.
Still not over that a Catholic diocese rescinded a job offer for a (wonderful) mom when she simply asked for a flexible option to pick her kid up from school and this would have not impacted her performance at all. Y’all. We got issues.
#NewProfilePic
Rest In Peace little one. You were so very loved. May I be reunited with you again some day. And may perpetual light shine upon you always.
@Bishopoftyler
@jeimseu8
@KeithFournier7
Bishop, it’s not about hating you, it’s a bout correcting your error. You can disagree w/ Biden but you don’t get to strip his baptismal identity given to him in the name of trinity. The parish makes us take lessons to baptize our kids, perhaps join one?
There’s a temptation of white suburban Catholic culture to think that as long as we say grace before meals, pray the rosary, and maybe throw in some liturgical cupcakes, our kids just might “make it” and carry on the faith. Y’all, this isn’t gonna cut it.
Apparently some Catholics feel too triggered by the term social justice and would rather use “charity.” Except that charity isn’t equivalent to social justice. Social justice involves much more, it involves fundamental rights, not simply hand outs.
Sweet baby Emmanuel Christopher, born Sept 13, weighing 9lb 6oz.
“God is with us, bearer of Christ”
This baby has already firmed my resolution that God is with us always and may he continue to do this for others throughout his life. Praise be to God for this precious life❤️
I think many American Catholics want to develop a Catholic identity in this country actually distinct from the prevailing (white) Protestantism. But to do this, we’d have to live our social justice teachings and for many, harping on distinct Catholic aesthetics is just easier.
Just attended
@KamalaHarris
rally in Savannah!!! With his mom’s permission I pushed this precious little boy through the crowd. Kamala spent more time with him than any adult. We erupted w “momala” shouts. Her time spent and authenticity w this boy was truly something special.
The church as high as the Vatican has now claimed the COVID vaccines morally licit. If you’re still claiming them to be illicit, knowing the Church’s stance, you are not only wrong, but rejecting the church’s authority to speak on moral issues.
Abortion 🧵:
In the most simple terms, the left disregards the rights of the unborn and the right disregards women. Politically and legally speaking there is no serious path forward for some ban that would alleviate abortion. As many of us have claimed, abortion has been long
Our priest went off when talking abt Catholic School’s Week questioning why we even have a Catholic school if parents won’t even take their children to Mass. Many families only came to this Mass bc of a homework pass incentive and I swear I feel like the priest was right here.
My husband and I had dates in the adoration chapel when we were dating. Never in our wildest imaginations could we have predicted how hard not only the world, but the church, would make raising kids in the faith. The US Church has lost its way and I worry abt my kids in it all.
For so many anti-maskers this is not about masks. It’s about power and control.
That’s why the anger is so disproportionate and intense. They can’t be told what to do. They are so used to having power and control and losing that infuriates them.
So where’s all the JD Vance can’t take communion articles👀
We saw a steady steam of what, several articles a week for months on how Biden couldn’t take communion. Almost like those were motivated by partisanship
Y’all I’m just so overjoyed that Archbishop Pierre has been named a cardinal. There are many days I’m more than scandalized by disingenuous, self protecting clergy and bishops- and lay people for that matter. But (soon to be) Cardinal Pierre is the real deal and gives me hope❤️
I need all conservative Catholics to remember exactly what yall kept hammering to us- you can’t vote pro choice in good conscience. Looks like you can’t vote Trump.
I’ve personally never worried about my daughter seeing a trans person in a restroom. I have spent a lot of time worrying about her going to college w a Brock Turner.
Believe it or not, the Catholic faith is actually less about clothing and more about addressing violence, violations of human dignity and the suffering of people. I know, mind blowing stuff right there.
@MRibnek
It's Catholic Answers.
They answer questions about the Catholic Faith, what is right & wrong per the Faith, etc.
Why do they have to discuss anything outside that?
Catholic with a well formed conscience here. Confident and having full peace that I have followed that conscience, formed by our faith, well with this vote. Don’t let anyone gaslight you into not following your conscience. ✌️
#CatholicsforBiden
Imagine having a daughter and that daughter goes missing one day. And you think, wow I’d rather find her dead than raped. I just. I don’t get this purity culture obsession, it’s so disordered. I’d do anything to find my daughter alive. Her life is so infinitely precious.
Interestingly Scripture doesn’t talk about what clothing to wear before you approach the Eucharist but it does talk about how to treat your neighbor before you approach.
I wish those in Church sounded more like “The God who created you out of love longs for your return to the Eucharist when it is safe for you to come back” and less like “if you go to the grocery store, you can go to Mass”
The former is more accurate, driven by love not guilt
I feel for gay Catholics. Days like today, that could provide the slightest reprieve, are filled with even more homophobic attacks than normal.
There’s clearly a lot of straight Catholics that need confession asap. Homophobia is a sin.
Last year I debated/tweeted reasons after reasons Maria Goretti’s story is so disturbingly manipulated by too many Catholics. This year, here we are in the same place. Others have written on this too and still the crazy goes on. This year I’m taking a dif approach, more personal.
The victims who’ve sued the church for sex abuse and cover up have done an immeasurable service to this church. They should be thanked for their service to the church.
Guess who spotted Emmanuel and blessed him?? 😍
His face lit up when he saw Emmanuel, much like when I told him I was pregnant. You can see his authentic joy with children.❤️
My sister in law
@DRibnek
caught the moment!
I’m gonna be vulnerable and say that
@BishopBarron
speaking at the National Catholic Prayer Breakfast feels like a deep wound. Barr is being awarded, Trump is making an appearance. Some of us are trying so incredibly hard every day to fight this very bastardization of the faith.
CW: Miscarriage
I’ve gone back and forth on whether to share this but in a moment of vulnerability, I’m going to. This week I found out I was pregnant and also that I lost the baby in what is (horribly) called a chemical pregnancy. It’s an early miscarriage
In honor of St. Maria Goretti feast day, I’ll be blocking all men defending rapists, sexual assault, skewed views of chastity and my fav, the misogynists on here today. Happy feast day.
Interesting to see pro-lifers today brag in droves about not caring about a suicidal pregnant woman who couldn’t get the help she needed. That’s a fantastic public witness, guys
Things Jesus did not do: defend Himself, even before his accusers.
Things Jesus did do: welcomed the marginalized.
Things Jesus told us to do: feed the hungry, visit the imprisoned, welcome the stranger.
Women can’t preach because we need the truth when you’re listening to what matters for eternal salvation. We don’t need you to say “does my dress make me look fat”
The average cost of an abortion is $750. The avg cost of child birth in the US is $18,665. For those lucky enough to have insurance, it’s $2,854. 80% of women cite economic hardship as a reason for abortion. Reduce- or even better, cover completely- prenatal and birthing cost.
I’m noticing that the rad trad thing is a huge trap for reverts.
We’ve got to figure out how fix that those wanting to go deeper into their Catholic faith often end up on blogs of ideologues instead of the soup kitchen.
The way I read the first line so excited they were gonna start talking about serving the poor and marginalized….
oh altar rails. That’s what they mean by acting like Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist. Alrighty.
If we want the Eucharistic Revival to work, we need to stop talking and start acting like Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist.
Bring back altar rails.
No more Communion in the hand. Recieve Jesus on the tongue while kneeling.
More Eucharistic Adoration.
Build beautiful
Every time I believe myself and every time I’m actually lying. It turns out I’m not going to get anything done when the baby falls asleep after all, who would put this baby down
So after losing a lot of blood today and having my blood pressure dramatically dip, I was taken by EMS to the ER. I have full confidence in the medical care I’m receiving- very grateful for the staff here and for modern medicine- but could always use the prayers. ❤️
@cathponeill
Understand this statement violates canon law. You are not a bishop and no ecclesial authority.
Not only does this show a lack of theological understanding of baptism, but it also shows an incredibly unhealthy conflating of the Church and the GOP. Stick the USCCB voting guides.
The same purity culture that allows you to say a man killed 8 people “to eliminate temptation” is the same purity culture that says the Maria Goretti died to preserve her chastity and the same purity culture that constantly makes sexual sin intrinsically connected to women.
Pro tip: don’t trust bishops and priests w/ a primarily straight cis base who preach on homosexuality but never homophobia, who preach on transgenderism but never on transphobia.
They’re out to score points not to challenge their own base toward holiness.
Reading through the comments on the America article on NFP and seeing so many Catholics say the earth is overpopulated...
With feeling: the problem is not too many people but the grossly unequal distribution and reckless consumption of the earth’s resources.
For all the worry about the state of Joe Biden's Catholic bona fides in some circles, it is Vance and his brand of Christian nationalism that represent a far greater threat to Catholic identity.
Vance's fraudulence is discerned in the fact that while he celebrates Catholicism as a vehicle for his sociocultural vision, he departs from the teaching of the church on a host of issues, from immigration to labor rights to climate change. via
@NCRonline
We must be crystal clear on this: the Viganò, Marshall, et al circles in the American Church are breaking away because Pope Francis combats their alt right ideology. Everything else they say is a distraction.
Catholics, I’m begging you to remember those Catholic media figures and journalists who either reported against George Floyd or who perhaps worse, cowardly avoided voicing for him or BLM consistently sidestepping any involvement in controversy. They don’t belong in Catholic media
Some personal news, I’m moving back to GA. We’ve bought a beautiful home on the marsh and it’s a wonderful opportunity for the kids to be back w/ family and friends. I also am starting school again in the fall to get my masters and license in clinical counseling.
Just pause and realize we’re trying to impose civil/criminal penalties for abortion in a place w/ no paid maternity leave. It’s mind boggling that this is the legal victory the prolife community thinks it is.
We don’t even have the basics in place. This is all so backwards.
The newfound ability of conservative prolifers for nuance and distinctions in order to vote for their pro choice president is an amazing thing to behold.
I’ve thought so much abt why Mass attendance, vocations, participation of our faith is low and I always come back to this:
We are a religion for the oppressed, downtrodden, poor, marginalized. When we fail to live this, our faith cannot flourish. It becomes crippled.
Despite my better judgement, I watched the 'Last Supper' clip from the opening ceremonies that everyone was outraged about.
One thing that was bugging me: "why tf is Bacchus in front of the Last Supper? That doesn't even make any sense."
I recalled a painting from my many art
Jason Evert has to finish up this little Catholics for Trump speaking engagement to prepare for his speaking engagement at the Eucharist Revival.
Lord have mercy, US Catholicism is deeply sick.
Yall. Emmanuel gave us quite a scare last night struggling with bronchiolitis, so we brought him in. He got some extra oxygen and will recover quickly and be just fine. But also, how can a sick baby be this sweet and adorable?? He just melts my heart.
Two reminders for women: despite the incessant bad framing of female Saints, 1. being raped doesn’t make you less in any way- including pure 2. Your life is worth infinitely more than purity and for damn sure worth infinitely more than a sexual assault.
Look. I tried to have a talk with him. That I wasn’t going to hold him all day again, that I have to get things done and he has to learn the skill of self soothe anyway. I think we all know who won in that little talk.
65% of Catholics support the death penalty.
I just, don’t get it. If I’m going to defy church teaching, it’ll be over an issue that at least seems to benefit me or others. There really is no logical reason to be so adamant for state executions.
Whatever caused so much uproar over the Pope offering a meditation to the faithful is evil.
He has every authority. It’s literally his role and it’s our role to take it to heart. The anger invoked is definitely of the evil one, period.
Imagine getting mad the FBI flagged your increasingly white nationalist brand of Catholic and not getting mad your brand of Catholic was becoming increasingly white nationalist.
