International March of the Living mourns the passing of Marion Wiesel. Marion Wiesel was the wife and driving force behind Elie Wiesel Z”L, Nobel Peace Prize Winner, Holocaust Survivor, celebrated author, and moral conscience of the world. Marion Wiesel, herself a Holocaust Survivor from Vienna, translated her husband’s writing from French to English, and encouraged his career as a writer and eloquent witness to the events of the Holocaust. Elie Wiesel attended the March of the Living on a number of occasions, sharing his compelling message with thousands of students on Holocaust Remembrance Day and Auschwitz – the same camp he was interned in decades before. After his passing in 2016, his son Elisha continued spreading his father’s profound message of morality and memory, sharing his words with students on the March of the Living in 2017. We know Elisha and his family will find comfort in the precious legacy his parents left for the world and in the knowledge of the millions of lives that were touched by their selfless and tireless efforts to preserve the memory of our 6 million martyrs. We wish the family comfort among the mourners of Zion in Jerusalem. ================= See links below featuring Elie Wiesel and Elisha Wiesel related to the March of the Living:

INTERNATIONAL HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LIBERATION OF AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU MONDAY JANUARY 27, 7:30PM EST SPECIAL MARCH OF THE LIVING FILM PRESENTATION SABOTAGE On Jan. 5, 1945, less than two weeks before the evacuation of Auschwitz, 4 female Jewish prisoners were publicly hanged for their courageous role in the historic revolt at the camp. The film tells their story through the moving testimony of survivors of the revolt using archival testimony from the USC Shoah Foundation and USHMM. Survivor Anna Heilman, whose sister was one of those executed, is the film’s main narrator. Heilman also shared her story with students on the 1994 March of the Living. “I let the women in this film talk for themselves… When I ask myself what attracted me to making Sabotage, my answer is unequivocal. The female perspective on the Holocaust, or if you will, the heroism of women in the Holocaust.” –Noa Aharoni, Sabotage Director

The Jewish boy who had to flee Germany after Kristallnacht received the Federal Order of Merit from the German President. Holocaust survivor George Shefi (Israel), received the Federal Order of Merit from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier by the German Ambassador to Israel, Steffen Seibert. The emotional reception was held ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marking 80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz. George's mother was murdered in the camp. Four generations of his family and the Deputy CEO of the International March of the Living organization, Revital Yakin Krakovsky, attended the event. George Shefi: "It is a great honor for me to receive the Merit from Germany for my long-standing work for Holocaust education in Germany. During my life, I have done this with thousands of German students. The fact that the award is given to me in the 80th year of the liberation of Auschwitz, the camp where my mother was murdered, is another expression of the title of my book about my life, which is "The Way of Fate". I will forever be grateful for my mother who saved my life". "George Shefi is an inspiration," said Revital Yakin Krakovsky, Deputy CEO of the International March of the Living. "The mission of the March of the Living is to pass the torch of memory and responsibility from the survivors' generation to the next generation. George is responsible for creating thousands of new young witnesses to his story who take responsibility for Holocaust memory and the need to fight antisemitism. We are honored that George will march this year in the 2025 March of the Living at Auschwitz-Birkenau". Shefi participated in a documentary produced by the International March of the Living, in honor of Holocaust Survivor Henry Moskowitz z"l, marking the 85th anniversary of the Kindertransport operation along with two other surviving children, Walter Bingham and Paul Alexander: Read more:

Marcha por la Vida Argentina (March of the Living Argentina) recently commemorated the 1938 Kristallnacht pogrom, offering youth from diverse backgrounds a joint activity designed to warn about the dangers of past and present anti-Semitism. The students created a mural/stained glass window emulating the reconstruction of windows broken during the Kristallnacht pogrom in 1938. According to Marcha por la Vida, the Kristallnacht event reminds us that: “Together we were part of a collective construction of consciousness and action. We are all responsible for laying the solid foundations for a future of respect and empathy among all human beings.”

Spotlight on the March of the Living Southern Region who hosted its annual Kristallnacht Commemorative Program this year. The event featured “Jewish Voices,” a poignant musical performance by Arnaud Sussmann, a third-generation Holocaust survivor, Artistic Director of the Chamber Music Society of Palm Beach, and violinist. Drawing inspiration from his grandfather’s survival of Auschwitz-Birkenau, Sussmann, alongside pianist Michael Brown, performed works by Jewish composers whose lives were profoundly affected by the Holocaust, including Robert Dauber, Samuel Adler, Erwin Schulhoff, and Mieczysław Weinberg.Their community, including many March of the Living alumni, gathered to remember, educate, and honor the local survivors for their contributions to both their community and the March of the Living. They were fortunate to have over 50 local survivors in attendance.

International March of the Living is shocked and appalled by the severe pogrom that took place last night in Amsterdam. This was a planned and organized attack, carried out by anti-Semitic rioters and terror supporters, who stabbed, beat, and ran over Israelis throughout the city without interference. This horrific event cannot be condemned with words alone; decisive action is needed to prevent the next attack. The European Union and its member states must strongly condemn the pogrom, bring the perpetrators to justice, and ensure the safety of Israelis and Jews in Europe. Tomorrow marks the 86th anniversary of Kristallnacht, the antisemitic pogroms that broke out all across Germany and Austria that led to the Holocaust – the eventual murder of six million Jews. Yet today Jews continue to face mortal danger all across Europe. History teaches us only too well, the fatal consequences of silence and inaction in the face of unbridled hatred and violence.

Today marks the 80th anniversary of the death of Hannah Senesh ( חנה סנש) who was executed by Hungarian Nazis on November 7 1944. Hannah Senesh was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1921. Embracing Zionism from an early age, Senesh experienced severe antisemitism in high-school, leading her to immigration to the land of Israel in 1939 in her teens. A gifted poet, Senesh composed poems in Hebrew and Hungarian while working on Kibbutz Sdot Yam before joining the Haganah and the British Women's Auxiliary Air Force. Senesh was then recruited for the Special Operations Executive and was sent to Egypt for parachute training. Today, Senesh is regarded as a national hero in Israel and in the Jewish diaspora. Her name and poetry are known to almost every school child in Israel, where several streets are also named after her. Among her most famous poems are: Stars, Blessed is the Match, Halicha L’Caesarea (Eli, Eli) On the March of the Living, the legacy and memory of Hannah Senesh are honored each year the students return to Poland. Most recently, on the 2024 March of the Living, Eli, Eli was performed by Israeli singer, Noa Kirel, a third generation to Holocaust survivors. The International March of the Living organization mourns the death of historian and educator Alex Dancyg, who was kidnapped from his home in Nir Oz on October 7 and murdered by Hamas terrorists in Gaza a few weeks ago. Alex was one of the founders of youth trips to Poland, a person who promoted Israeli-Polish dialogue, and educated generations of teachers and students about Holocaust remembrance. In the 2024 March of the Living, his son Yuval participated in the delegation of victims of October 7, alongside Holocaust survivors, released hostages, and family members of hostages still in captivity. During the march, we prayed for his return and the return of all the hostages. On this difficult day, we wish to share in the deep sorrow of the family, who moved mountains to bring Alex home alive. May his memory be blessed. In the photo: Yuval Dancyg (second from left) alongside Fernando Marman and Gabriela Leimberg, who were released from Hamas captivity, Amos Horn, brother of Eitan and Yair Horn who are still in captivity, and Thomas Hand, father of Emily who was also released from captivity, at the opening of the 2024 March of the Living.
