Managing Editor & Senior Writer at Daily Faceoff. Big hair, big eyebrows, big love for the game. Read the article before you comment. Opinions are my own.
Johnny Gaudreau was an ego-less star.
Once, at a large event with many fans present, I was slated to interview him. It was so loud that we couldn't hear each other speak.
I looked for somewhere suitable. All I could find was a small custodial room, glorified broom closet. (1/2)
Barry Trotz's four seasons with Islanders..
1. Jack Adams
2. Final four loss to eventual Cup champ
3. Final four loss to eventual Cup champ
4. 13-game road trip, 50 games in 99 days to end season
...there has to be more to his canning than meets the eye.
Imagine sitting at home miserable for three months, quarantined…
Being told "You will get to watch a crazy 24-team NHL playoff tournament on TV soon"…
And your reaction is to complain about the format
If you're one of those people mad at athletes for boycotting and taking away your sports for a day:
Have you ever considered blaming the ones shooting black people instead?
The NHL is "monitoring" the Jets. Meanwhile, the Coyotes could mail a ransom note to Gary Bettman telling him they kidnapped his puppy, and he'd give them another year to figure things out.
Johnny didn't complain. We hopped in the cramped quarters and he answered every question.
He told stories about his family and hockey life, his brother, his dad, growing up in South Jersey.
Just a down-to-earth star who loved the game so much. R.I.P.
I'm sure I'm not the first to notice this, but it just hit me: If Phil Kessel plays eight more games to pass Yandle for the ironman record this season...
...we can call the record The Kessel Run.
List of NHLers with a Hart, Art Ross, Conn Smythe, Calder and three or more Stanley Cups:
1. Bryan Trottier
2. Patrick Kane
3. Evgeni Malkin
- End of list
(but oh yes Malkin "Isn't a top 100 player of all-time." LOL)
This is on the Flyers as much as it is on Provorov.
1. Host Pride Night
2. Learn of player whose religion preaches hate toward the communities supported by Pride Night
3. Learn that player rejects Pride Night
4. Let him PLAY on Pride Night
What a slap in the face
Fun fact from Robert Thomas today at the NHL Player Media Tour:
When the offer sheet news broke, he was *with* multiple Oilers players including Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. Awkward moment and Thomas explained that they weren't too happy 😂
Logan Mailloux: "Don't worry about it, come on down, first-round pick."
Tony DeAngelo: "Don't worry about it, come on down, sign with us."
Marc-Andre Fleury? "Pffft Vezina? You're gone, go read about it on Twitter."
Can hockey be nice to the nice guys instead?
Uproar over Trouba confuses me.
Do

fans suddenly forget why he was traded to the Rangers in the first place? The man is devoted to his partner. You may not like it, but it's not something to hate on a person for. It's commendable to me
Anyone claiming it was “poor form” for McDavid not to come out for Conn Smythe:
Read this excerpt from an interview I did with J-S Giguere a few years back.
Yes, he did come out to get the trophy, but this is still good insight into how weird it feels to win on a losing team.
I can’t imagine what the injury list reveal will be for the Oilers in a few days. “Darnell Nurse was clinically dead, Leon Draisaitl’s ankle bone is literal dust” and so on,
One thing I don't understand:
If the Sabres know Jack Eichel won't play for them again anyway and that he needs to be healthy to have max trade value, why not let him have the exact surgery he wants?
Barry Trotz aside, it’s funny to me that the Bruins are just looking at a coaching list now that consists of *checks notes* inferior options to Bruce Cassidy 🤷♂️
Oh my goodness, just saw replay of the call on Holl.
Two minutes for... lightly, accidentally bumping into another player?
I typically defend the officials more than most. But...I'm speechless at that call.
At the 1924 Olympics, the Canadian men won round-robin games by the following scores:
30-0
22-0
33-0
The American men scores:
19-0
22-0
11-0
We didn’t cancel the event, right? We gave the other nations time to get better. And they did.
Stay the course with women’s hockey!
Among those with seven or more games played, Jack Campbell had the highest save percentage by a Leaf goalie in the playoffs since Johnny Bower in 1963-64.
You are NOT the problem, Jack. Do not blame yourself.
It's clear Igor Shesterkin has taken over as the Vezina Trophy frontrunner, but I'm not stopping there.
How about Hart Trophy? Has anyone singlehandedly elevated his team more this season?
To me it's Shesterkin and Ovechkin at the top right now.
Anyone else think Nazem Kadri agreed on a handshake contract at least a week ago and is just waiting on Team X to clear cap space?
I can't imagine a UFA of this magnitude is actually still undecided, two weeks into free agency.
This footage kinda sums up why I’m not a big fan of fighting in hockey anymore.
When the guy saying “someone please help!” is the same one who knocked him down while fighting him...
It all just feels absurd to me. We don’t need it anymore
Hershey Bears Player, Kale Kessy is in stable condition and being sent to Hershey Medical Center after a fight against Charlotte Checkers Player number 19
Honestly: there wasn't much difference between Bertuzzi-Moore and what Tom Wilson did to Panarin last night – aside from the resulting injury. The action and intent were as bad in my mind.
Look at that timing.
Prospective NHL owner issues press release asking league for admission a mere minutes after a report says 5 players have been ordered to surrender to police to face pending sexual assault charges.
If the NHL had no reservations about reinstating Bowman/Quenneville/MacIsaac, then why news dump it on July 1?
You know what you're doing. Embarrassing behavior.
To anyone trying to claim Vegas in Cup final is an embarrassment:
You’re really discrediting the work of George McPhee and Gerard Gallant.
Did YOU know William Karlsson was this good, for instance? No. No, you did not.
This is friggin’ incredible. Stop whining — enjoy this!
So the Hurricanes weren't comfortable paying Alex Nedeljkovic for a small sample size...but feel Frederik Andersen is "safe" enough to pay? I don't see the logic, personally.
"tHey CHeaTed WItH tHe SaLAry CaP,"
...said the bitter fans about the team that broke no rules and won the Cup with game-winning goals in the final from Yanni Gourde, Blake Coleman, Tyler Johnson and Ross colton
Said it before and I’ll say it again:
‘Heavy’ is not the Leafs’ need. It didn’t move needle with Simmonds, Clifford etc.
Heavy Skill is what they need. Toughness in TOP six not bottom. Think S. Bennett, T. Wilson, E. Kane etc.
Not Reaves
Honestly, what do you do if you're Kyle Dubas? A dominant regular-season team, vastly improved defense, home ice advantage, the Rocket Richard winner. And this is the result.
Like, I'd be out of ideas in his shoes.
Connor McDavid needs 13 points in his final seven games to reach 100.
Connor McDavid has gotten 13 points in a seven-game stretch 18 TIMES this season.
Since Taylor Hall trade:
- Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak have 36.2% of Boston's goals
- Hall-Krejci-Smith have 32.8% of Boston's goals
This is the balance Boston desperately needed. Gonna be a VERY tough out in playoffs…
So I'm in Buffalo to interview some Sabres, and a truck just drove by the KeyBank Center and honked the "Let's-go-Buff-a-lo" as it drove by. Is this a regular thing? I didn't know about it. I dig it.
Brianna Decker:
“Karlsson went after me, so I was like, ‘OK, I think I might have beaten him,’ but I didn’t know how long it took me. I was just casually going through the demo."
Leon Draisaitl:
“She beat me? Wow. That’s really impressive. Good for her.”
#PayDecker
If this is truly it for Shea Weber, I have to re-share a gem from Pavel Datsyuk when I asked him in 2012 to describe then-peak Weber:
"He is my nightmare."
My favorite answer of the NHL Player Media Tour was from Nathan MacKinnon.
When I asked if the Hart Trophy was still on his bucket list, he surmised:
"There was a time when I cared about it a lot, but I realize I can't put my faith in how 'Jimmy from Philly' or whoever votes"
List of NHLers to record three straight 100-point seasons:
M. Bossy
P. Coffey
M. Dionne
P. Esposito
B. Federko
W. Gretzky
D. Hawerchuk
Br. Hull
J. Kurri
G. Lafleur
M. Lemieux
B. Orr
A. Ovechkin
J. Roenick
M. Rogers
P. Stastny
B. Trottier
S Yzerman
…And Connor McDavid
Radko Gudas is on pace for 446 hits over an 82-game schedule. The NHL record is 382!
Gudas has 98 hits in 18 games. This is the "50 goals in 39 games" of hits.
"oFFiciAtiNg HAs neVEr beeN WOrsE"
Tell that to the 1993 Maple Leafs, 1999 Sabres, 2004 Flames, 2019 Golden Knights...
Not saying it has been good this spring, but it's not a new problem here folks
Sometimes I think people don't realize how much upside/ceiling Patrik Laine hast left in his game.
He has 138 goals at age 22.
Alex Ovechkin on his 22nd birthday: 98 goals
It's a reminder of how young Laine still is, and how young he got started in this league
The NHL washing its hands of Pride warmup jerseys was disappointing and cowardly but predictable.
The Pride Tape ban is next level.
They aren’t even hiding it anymore.
“Hockey is For Everrrr-yeah, no, we just don’t care about you, sorry, we can’t fake this any longer.”
The Tampa salary cap takes are getting sad at this point. People are still hung up on this?
Do you think they are that dependent on adding one player? Do you not remember them winning the Cup minus Stamkos?
Get. Over. It.
Re: Thomas Chabot.
If you're coming back from a BRAIN INJURY and you're "testing it in warmups"… call me crazy but that might mean it's too soon to come back.
Two 62-win teams in NHL history. Both lost in their record-breaking seasons. Both went on to win back-to-back Cups immediately afterward.
The Detroit Red Wings in 1997 and 1998.
Now the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020 and 2021.
Don’t say “OMG Tampa paid so much.”
We know better.
Say “OMG Tampa sees something awesome in Jeannot.”
Like they saw in Hagel. And Paul. And Coleman. And Goodrow.
Tanner Jeannot brings back a whopper for

For me, Hank Lundqvist is the greatest goalie of his generation. On top of the Vezina, gold medal, sixth all-time in wins – what stands out is that he finished top six in Vezina voting 10 years in a row.
Considering how fickle the position is, that's amazing.
I’m not saying it’s full hot seat time for Sheldon Keefe quite yet.
But… are you clicking on Barry Trotz’s LinkedIn page maybe just for one little peek if you’re Kyle Dubas?
The Buffalo Sabres were 17-6-2 and first overall in the NHL standings on November 27, 2018.
So the 3-0-0 start is nice and all but let’s take a breath before punching their playoff ticket 😂
Past 10 NHL seasons: Tuukka Rask is first in save percentage, fourth in shutouts, seventh in wins.
Yet there is a crowd out there that still hates on this guy. I'll never understand it
Just asked Leon Draisaitl how he feels about being second in the NHL with 39 goals.
His response: “I’d trade some of those goals to make the playoffs.”
Everyone: “why does it always have to be about the Leafs?”
Also everyone: immediate reaction to Pettersson contract is to compare to Nylander
(Not Panarin, not MacKinnon, nor Pastrnak. Allllll Nylander)
I asked Seguin and Dickinson if the lack of anyone participating in Matt Dumba's protest Sunday influenced what they did today.
Seguin's response in full:
Need help finding some NHL player examples....... can anyone think of a center who plays 14-16 minutes a game but plays little to no power play? Such as Scott Laughton in Philly.
Cole Caufield has played 83 games since Martin St-Louis became his coach.
Not only does Caufield have 48 goals over that stretch...he is third in the NHL in 5v5 goals/60 over that span behind only Pastrnak and Matthews.
Don't sleep on Mr. Caufield for the Rocket...
Fun fact: since the start of 2016-17, Jack Eichel averages more points per game than Alex Ovechkin, Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Artemi Panarin and Tyler Seguin.
Cherrypicking? Of course. but just making a point that Eichel = gooood
I know fighting has been “part of the game” forever.
Smoking sections were also part of restaurants forever.
It’s ok to get rid of something once you realize it’s bad for your health. Just sayin
Hershey Bears Player, Kale Kessy is in stable condition and being sent to Hershey Medical Center after a fight against Charlotte Checkers Player number 19
In hindsight: Doug Wilson is the same guy who got Joe Thornton for Marco Sturm, Wayne Primeau and Brad Stuart. You wade into the blockbuster trade waters with him, and you're clearly dealing with, er, a predatory marine animal of sorts
Connor McDavid currently on track to join Gretzky, Lemieux and Orr as the only players to have more assists than the league's third-highest point total in an NHL season. Whoa baby
Which memory is more painful – playing 48 games in 94-95 and 12-13, or losing all of 04-05 season?
It's the latter. That's why NHL should forget making 2020-21 season 82 games. Finish 2019-20 no matter how late. Award the Cup in November. Start a new 48-game season in February.
McDavid's 75 points in 40 games is incredible.
It also just randomly reminded me that Mario Lemieux, during peak Dead Puck, after three years retired, at 36 years old, had 76 in 43. 🤯 🤯 🤯
I feel like it's one of the most forgotten NHL accomplishments
Some news:
Today is my final day at The Hockey News after 11 years. It has been surreal to fulfill this childhood dream. I’ll never forget it!
I’m leaving to embark on a new adventure – still in hockey, so I’m not going anywhere! Details to follow in the coming days.
Walman signed his deal in 2023…his $3.4 million comes off the books.
The Wings now have more than $32 million in cap space. Room for a lot more even after extending Raymond and Seider.
If you're coughing up a 2nd too…Yzerman must have something major brewing.
