When I was struggling through query rejections and shelved books, it helped to remind myself that it was about the journey, not the destination. Writing books made me happy. It would still make me happy even if I was unpublished.

One of the beautiful things about writing is if you push yourself, and never let yourself get off easy, you can ALWAYS improve. Always.

The map of the Skylands! Ella swiped this from the Mage's things on his skyship. Make sure to zoom in to read the names of some of the islands. We'll have to return this map. Mage's rather protective of his things. For now, it's our little secret.

At one point, the monsters were going to be smaller!

Write the thing that gives you that excited twist in your gut. The thing that makes you hurry home after work. That makes you jot down ideas when you're away from the computer. Write with passion. Write from the heart.

Unpopular opinion: I despise onion-filled guacamole. It no longer tastes like avocado, but becomes green-colored onion paste. It's so prevalent, I am hesitant to order guac when I go to a restaurant.

Anytime I'm watching a video and it starts with the sound "Please don't scroll" I immediately scroll.

A gorgantaun size comparison chart from my Above the Black trilogy. Yeah, these things are BIG. No wonder there's a whole Trade in the Skylands dedicated just to hunting them. The gigataun is almost a mile long!

Today, one of my students told me her sister was reading SKY'S END as part of her high school book club. I taught the sister several years ago, and she had been in my classroom when I first found out I got a book deal, and my whole class cheered and clapped while I cried.

I'll be in Seattle on March 6th for the Emerald City Comic Con. Looking forward to it!

AMONG SERPENTS is a month old. I took a chance this morning to go see how people were reacting to my book, and I am so excited by the response. Thank you! I am currently hard at work on DOWNFALL and making it the absolute best book possible. "Together, we rise." -MJG

A few years ago, my wife and I were eating while I was talking through some revision ideas for SKY'S END. My wife said, "What if, in a few years, random strangers are talking about your characters around the dinner table like this?" I smiled. It felt like too big of a dream.

Ah. Middle school. It's so surprising and hilarious. I'll spend a whole day with my students, reviewing for a test, and urging them to study that night. And the next day, they'll still come into class, wide-eyed and completely shocked, "Wait, we have a test today?!"

Sometimes, I get a mean comment on social media like, "Your book sounds like derivative trash." It'd be easy to get angry and block them. Instead, I usually say something like "No book is for everyone. I hope you find a story that you love." They never know how to respond.

I'm the type of person who, as soon as I get home from work, is in pajamas for the rest of the night.

One of my favorite things is coming back to a book to revise it after letting it sit for a few months. I'm able to improve everything. That's what I'm doing with DOWNFALL right now.

I genuinely cannot stand the indie vs trad pub wars on social media.
