Vice President for Military and Veterans Affairs - Austin Peay State University | Leader; Team Builder; Mentor; Advisor; Connector
Clarksville, Tennessee
Joined February 2009
It’s always a great start to a Saturday when I get to spend some time with friends and teammates on the beautiful @austinpeay State University campus! This morning, we shared with a battalion of future Govs all of the opportunities we provide that make it so awesome to #BeAGov! …bonus when I get to be with my battle buddies from @APSU_ROTC, Govs Vets (APSU @studentvets Chapter), and our Institute for National Security and Military Studies (sorry, teammates, I was so engaged in conversation on foreign and defense policy with your Director and Dean that I forgot to grab a pic!). Now on to the @letsgopeay @GovsMBB game, @GovsWBB game, and @APSUHockeyClub game. Busy, busy day (and night)…but that’s what makes it, and every other day, a “Great Day to be a Gov (battle cry credit to Gerald J. Harrison @GJHJ)!” #LetsGoPeay!

Throughout my military career and the seven(ish) years since retirement, I’ve had occasion to use the words “honored” and/or “privileged” to describe my participation in really special ceremonies and activities. They all pale in comparison to this…over the weekend I was honored, privileged, and abundantly blessed and grateful to officiate our niece Stephanie’s marriage to Matt. Steph has always been more like a daughter to me and Grace and Matt is among the finest of young men we’ve ever met and makes a wonderful addition to our extended family! What an absolutely perfect weekend! PS - Steph and Matt requested the selfie…and you know they had to twist my arm to take it, right?!?

Management ≠ Leadership! The two are related, but they are surely NOT the same. Smart leaders recognize the difference. We manage budgets, programs, facilities, vehicle fleets, schedules, supply chains, and other “stuff.” People, on the other hand, do NOT want to be managed. They want to be inspired, to be motivated to accomplish a shared mission, and to have solid role models in their leaders who develop and mentor them and do their best to take care of their teammates while their teammates take care of “stuff.” They want to be led, not managed. Lead your people well and they will manage all of that “stuff” well. True leaders recognize the difference. When smart leaders have really great teammates, they’re humble yet confident enough to adapt their systems to leverage those teammates’ greatest strengths, rather than forcing those great teammates to adapt to systems, stunting their initiative and creativity. #Management ≠ #Leadership!

Does your university’s baseball team have the privilege of having their pre-season photo shoot hosted by the amazing American Warriors of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) Combat Aviation Brigade at @FortCampbell? Ours does! #WingsOfDestiny | #BANG! | #LetsGoPeay | #ClarksvillesHometownTeam

Yesterday, I had the privilege of serving as guest speaker at the @austinpeay State University School of Nursing “Civility Day!” What an honor to share “my personal civility story” and to highlight how civility is a foundational characteristic of good leadership! Thank you, @APSUSON, for offering me a few minutes with your amazing faculty, staff, and students! We in the APSU Military & Veterans Affairs Division are blessed to have you as teammates!

A simple drawing from which we can draw a number of lessons. I think it can be viewed from two perspectives. First, the "boss" has made it to the top and is celebrating his individual success with little concern for the folks trying to get there. Second, the "boss" has made it to the top and is yelling at the folks who are trying to get there. I'll comment from the latter perspective. Here’s what I get out of it: 1. Leaders observe and act more than they yell. 2. Your team will reach the objective more quickly if you roll up your sleeves and help them get there vs. just telling them to get there and expecting them to do it with little help or inspiration. 3. You’ll be much more aware of which teammates are struggling if you jump in and work WITH them every now and then. 4. People will work tirelessly to support leaders who genuinely care about them. What do you see? #leadership | #LeadByExample | #YellingIsntLeading | #TEAM!

Awesome leadership advice from an epic, yet very humble leader. We were blessed to have met Dick Winters in Hershey, Pennsylvania not long before his passing. A few years later, I was honored to speak at a Memorial Day ceremony and lay a wreath at his grave at the Bergstrasse Lutheran Church in his beautiful little home town of Ephrata, Pennsylvania. He was the epitome of the inspirational but humble, servant leader. It should not be lost on us that he repeats his advice to be a “leader of character!” Such immense wisdom in so few words... #leadership #character #courage #humility #respect #ServantLeadership #LeadershipMatters! #TEAM!

What's the common thread that runs through each of these differences? People! - leaders mentor people. - leaders motivate people. - leaders inspire people. - leaders foster teamwork among people. - leaders acknowledge people. - leaders shield people. - leaders unite people. Managing programs, sales, budgets, facilities, vehicle fleets, supply chains, etc. is important. Lead people well and they'll manage those things well for you and your team. Leadership is a people business! #leadership
