@FreeAlKhawaja Looking back, 2024 was a challenging year for the Free Al-Khawaja Campaign for many reasons. It was the year Maryam Al-Khawaja was diagnosed and battled with cancer while staging a sit-in in front of the Danish Parliament, calling for her father’s release and a ceasefire in Gaza. It was also the year the King of Bahrain issued three royal pardons, releasing approximately 3,000 prisoners, including political prisoners. Heartbreakingly, Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja was excluded from all of these pardons. Also, 2024 marked 5,000 days of Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja’s unjust imprisonment for his human rights advocacy in Bahrain - 5,000 days without seeing his wife, children, grandchildren, or friends. 2025 must be the year the Danish government demands the release of Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja. It must be the year that Al-Khawaja is unconditionally freed. #FreeAlKhawaja

On December 18, 2024, during the strike in Building 7, Mr. AbdulWahab Hussein met with Bassam Al Maraj, the head of intelligence who stated he is an envoy from the Minister of Interior. In this meeting, Mr. AbdulWahab Hussein agreed to communicate with the political prisoners in Building 7 to help de-escalate based on three promises made by Bassam Al Maraj. He then spoke with the striking prisoners, and they agreed to end their strike. The Jau Prison administration then transferred them to Building 5, where they are currently residing. The promises made by Bassam Al Maraj: 1. The prisoners in Building 7 will be treated like other prisoners. 2. There will be no severe restrictions or retaliation due to the strike. 3. The prisoners will be integrated into the release programs over the next few months. When asked about his opinion on the release program that includes open prison and alternative punishment program, Mr. AbdulWahab Hussein stated that he did not want to express an opinion on these programs because they relate to a political point of view. When meeting with political prisoners, he encouraged them to take advantage of any available opportunity to improve their conditions in prison or to be released. On January 12, 2025, Mr. AbdulWahab Hussein sent a follow-up letter to the head of intelligence, inquiring why the promises made have not been implemented, even though the political prisoners had fulfilled their part of the agreement.

في 18 ديسمبر 2024، خلال الإضراب في المبنى 7، التقى الأستاذ عبد الوهاب حسين ببسام المراج، رئيس المخابرات الذي ادعى أنه مبعوث من وزير الداخلية. في هذا اللقاء، وافق الأستاذ عبد الوهاب حسين على التواصل مع السجناء السياسيين في المبنى 7 للمساعدة في تخفيف الاحتقان بناءً على ثلاثة وعود قدمها بسام المعراج. بعدها، تحدث مع السجناء المضربين، ووافقوا على إنهاء إضرابهم. بعد ذلك، قامت إدارة سجن جو بنقلهم إلى المبنى 5، حيث يقيمون حالياً. الوعود المقدمة ��ن قبل بسام المعراج: 1. سيتم معاملة سجناء المبنى 7 مثل باقي السجناء. 2. لن تكون هناك قيود مشددة أو انتقام بسبب الإضراب. 3. سيتم دمج السجناء في برامج الإفراج خلال الأشهر القليلة القادمة. عند سؤاله عن رأيه في برنامج الإفراج الذي يتضمن السجن المفتوح وبرنامج العقوبات البديلة، صرح الإستاذ عبد الوهاب حسين بأنه لا يريد أن يبدي رأياً في هذه البرامج لأنها تتعلق بوجهة نظر سياسية. عند اجتماعه مع السجناء السياسيين شجعهم على استغلال أي فرصة متاحة لتحسين ظروفهم داخل السجن أو للإفراج. في 12 يناير 2025، أرسل الأستاذ عبد الوهاب حسين رسالة متابعة إلى رئيس المخابرات، يستفسر عن سبب عدم تنفيذ الاتفاقيات المبرمة، رغم أن السجناء السياسيين قد أوفوا بجزءهم من الاتفاق.
