The Director General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) appeared on Arise TV on January 16, 2025, to discuss the recent engagement between the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reform Committee. He affirmed that the Governors are major stakeholders in the taxation ecosystem of Nigeria, therefore, their alignment with the tax reform is a significant breakthrough. He commended the Governors for organising the parley and the cordiality of the engagement. However, he urged the governors to reconsider their stand on the Company Income Tax (CIT). The governors favoured the retention of the current 30%, as against the proposed 25% in the Tax Bill before the National Assembly. He alluded to the fact that lowering corporate tax is a global trend which was signposted by the G7 countries back in 2021. This has proven to be a veritable avenue for attracting investment and boosting competitiveness. The DG mentioned that the worldwide average for corporate income tax is 23.51%. He added that leading economies have lower corporate tax regimes, including USA at 21%, China and UK at 25%, Russia 20% and Singapore 17%! He also pointed out that African countries, realizing the imperative of incentivizing international and local investment, have followed suit. South Africa is 27%, Algeria 26%, Egypt is 22.5% and Ghana is 25%. These exemplify the need for a reconsideration of the NGF position, doing so will encourage investment and provide relief for existing businesses. He said Nigeria needs to be competitive in terms of attracting FDIs, so a reduced CIT signposts Nigeria as a major contender in the consideration of international capital in Africa.

On Thursday, January 9, 2025, Mr. Segun Ajayi-Kadir, mni, Director-General of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, was a guest panellist during the 13th Anniversary of the January 9 Collective (J9C). The event was themed "Business and Policy Strategy: Examining the Role of Reform in Enhancing the Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria." During the panel discussion, Mr. Ajayi-Kadir urged the government to view manufacturing as essential to economic growth. He called for policies that promote industrial development, incentivise private sector participation, and facilitate intersectoral engagement. He emphasised the urgent need to consider and pass the four pending tax bills and revise electricity tariffs to reflect actual consumption. Additionally, he urged the Central Bank of Nigeria to redeem the outstanding $2.4 billion in foreign exchange obligations. Mr. Ajayi-Kadir noted that while attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) and soliciting investors is important, the priority should be to grow the domestic economy by supporting local companies and improving the business environment. He argued that this is the best way to attract investors. Other panellists included Mrs. Toki Mabogunje, a former President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry; Mr. Adedeji Popoola, Founder of Fina Trust Microfinance Bank; Mr. Ugodre Obi-Chukwu, Founder of Nairametrics. Also, Dr. Kayode Onafowokan, Chairman of Coleman Wires and Cables served as Chairman of the occasion and Prince Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, was the Keynote Speaker.
