Mary Ann along with Miss Magill collected funds for the Ladies Association around Waring St, Hill St & Donegall Quay raising £47 and 4 shillings. They received from Mr Henry Steen, a provision merchant on Hill Street, £1, 10 shillings from ‘A friend’ on Waring Street.

Mary Ann & 23 other women played an important role in collecting donations in Belfast. The ladies divided up the town into 12 districts and went off in twos or threes requesting for funds. In March 1847, the ladies had so far raised £455.13.8- a significant sum of money.

Mrs Hewetson wrote on 14 Feb 1847: ‘I beg leave to implore relief for the poor in the neighbourhood of Milford (near which I reside), among whom I daily witness the increase of destitution, sickness, and misery, in the hope of lessening, in some degree, the appalling distress’.

The Bazaar was well organised having its own committee, comprising of 20 women, a treasurer and two secretaries. There were also 10 patronesses who supported the event including the Marchioness of Downshire (see image below), Lady Lurgan and Mrs Hamilton from Killyleagh Castle.

At the Ladies Association’s initial meeting it was proposed to hold a Bazaar in the Large Room of the Commercial Buildings, Belfast, on Monday 5th April 1847. During the Bazaar, the women could sell their works to raise money to help those in need during the Famine.

There were various sub-committees of the Ladies Association which each played an important role including the Corresponding Committee, the Industrial Committee the Clothing Committee and the Collecting Committee who sought out donations. Mary Ann was involved with this Committee.

The Ladies Association for the Relief of Irish Destitution was well received amongst local Belfast women with 89 ladies joining its ranks. This included members of the Poorhouse Ladies’ Committee- Mrs J Cunningham, Mrs D Anderson, Miss McCracken, Miss Mitchell and Mrs Wakefield.

At the age of 76, Mary Ann McCracken joined the Belfast Ladies Association for the Relief of Irish Destitution on Fri 1 Jan 1847. The aim of this Society was to raise money to help people throughout Ireland, particularly women and their families, who were impacted by the Famine.
