In 2014, speedrunner DK28 triggered a mysterious glitch in Contra that ended the first stage early.

There are so many youtubers now that make “speedrun explained” videos, that GDQ/marathons won’t be as popular anymore
Viewership is down because they are losing this market share. Like, the average Eazyspeezy upload gets WAAAAY more views than recent GDQ runs on Youtube
